Live-in relationships againstIndian middle class norms: HC

Time of India6 days ago
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court has observed that live-in relationships are against the values held by Indian middle-class society.
A single-judge bench of Justice Siddharth made this observation while granting bail to a man accused of sexually exploiting a woman on the false promise of marriage.
Passing the order on June 24, the bench expressed displeasure at the growing number of such cases reaching the courts. "After live-in-relationship has been legalized by the apex court, such cases are coming to the court because the concept of live-in-relationship is against the settled law in the Indian middle class society," the bench said.
The court further said live-in relationships disproportionately harm women, while men move on and even marry after such relationships end; it is difficult for women to find a life partner after a breakup.
The court made these observations while dealing with the bail plea of accused Shane Alam, who had been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Pocso Act for engaging in a physical relationship with a woman on the false assurance of marriage and later refusing to marry her.
As per counsel for the applicant, there is allegation against the applicant of committing the offence of rape of the woman on false promise of marriage.

She had gone with the applicant to a number of places but it was alleged that the applicant had refused to marry her.
The woman's lawyer argued that the accused's actions had "ruined the woman's entire life" and that "no one would be willing to marry her now." After taking note of these arguments, the court observed that live-in relationships have had the "greatest impact on the younger generation" and that their "adverse consequences are evident in existing cases like the present one.
The court, however, granted bail to the accused on the ground that he has been in jail since Feb 22 this year and had criminal history.

Money laundering case: Delhi HC junks actor Jacqueline's plea to quash FIR

The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a plea by Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez for quashing an FIR against her in a Rs 200 crore money laundering case , involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar . Justice Anish Dayal dismissed her plea, which also sought to quash the second supplementary chargesheet of the Enforcement Directorate in the case and proceedings pending in a Delhi trial court. The ED counsel opposed the petition on the ground of maintainability, saying a special court had taken cognisance of the prosecution complaint (chargesheet) and prima facie found a case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bank Owned Properties For Sale In Khanh Thuong (Prices May Surprise You) Foreclosed Homes | Search ads Search Now Undo The cognisance order was not challenged, the counsel added. 'Marathi ko mara na?': How a simple recharge fight exploded into Marathi vs non-Marathi war in Thane; Viral video sparks outrage

What began as a simple dispute over a mobile phone recharge in Thane has now turned into a full-blown Marathi vs non-Marathi row. A viral video has added fuel to the fire, showing a man slapping others who are made to apologise in Marathi. The incident has sparked public outrage and brought political heat at a time when language tensions in Maharashtra are already high. How it all started The dispute started on 1 July, when a 43-year-old man named Kiran Tanaji Sawant went to a local shop in Thane to get his mobile phone recharged. Due to a technical issue, the recharge didn't go through. The shop staff claimed that Sawant lost his temper and began creating chaos. This led to a fight between him and four to five staff members. Sawant reportedly suffered injuries in the scuffle. He later filed a police complaint, and a case was registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to causing hurt. Four shop staff were detained and released after receiving legal notice. — stupidpanda7902 (@stupidpanda7902) The controversial video The matter then reached the office of former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare. A video from the meeting has gone viral on social media. In the clip, a staff member is seen trying to speak when one of Vichare's aides interrupts him and says, 'Marathi mein bol, Marathi ko mara na? Marathi mein bol,' which means 'Speak in Marathi. Didn't you hit a Marathi? Speak in Marathi.' Live Events The video then shows Kiran Sawant sitting as the accused staff members approach him one by one, apologise with folded hands, touch his feet, and get slapped by him. They are made to hold their ears, look into the camera and admit they were wrong. Politics and public anger The video has triggered huge backlash, especially among those concerned about the rising Marathi vs non-Marathi tension. Some political leaders argue that people living in Maharashtra should respect and learn the local language. Others, however, have pointed out that forcing someone to speak a language or humiliating them is not acceptable. They have called on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to step in and stop any further violence linked to the language debate. This comes just days after another incident where Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters allegedly attacked a shopkeeper for not speaking Marathi. The growing pressure on non-Marathi speakers, especially migrants working in the state, is now drawing national attention. Inputs from agencies

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Senior Russian naval officer, once awarded 'Hero of the Russian Federation' by Putin, killed in combat

A high-ranking Russian naval officer was killed during "combat operations" in the border region of Kursk, Russia's defence ministry confirmed on Thursday. Major general Mikhail Gudkov, who served as deputy commander of the Russian navy, died on 2 July while 'carrying out his duty' during ongoing clashes in the area. 'During combat operations in one of the border areas of the Kursk region on July 2, 2025... Major General Mikhail Evgenievich Gudkov was killed,' Russia's state-run RIA news agency quoted the defence ministry as saying. Gudkov was one of the most senior Russian military figures to be killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The 42 year old officer had been serving in the military since 2000. In 2023, he was awarded the title of 'Hero of the Russian Federation,' Kremlin's highest honour, by Russian president Vladimir Putin. Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of the Primorye region in Russia's Far East, paid tribute to the officer, describing him as a 'strong-spirited fighter' Kozhemyako said that he had talked a "lot" to Gudkov over the years and was"was killed carrying out his duty as an officer." Even after being appointed deputy commander of the Russian navy, he "did not stop going out in person to the positions of our marines.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bis zu 4,3% jährliche Zinsen - melden Sie sich bei eToro an. eToro Hier klicken Undo Gudkov had previously commanded the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet, which is based in the Russian Far East, he said, quoted by AFP. Ukrainian forces seized significant portions of the Kursk region in a surprise offensive last year, launched in response to Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion. Although Moscow claimed to have fully regained control of the area in April, fighting along the border has persisted.
