Soundgarden to release final album with late frontman Chris Cornell: ‘It's a gift to Chris'

New York Post07-05-2025
Soundgarden will rise —and rock — again.
And, yes, with Chris Cornell.
Indeed, the black hole that was left when the grunge god died by suicide in 2017 will be filled with some sun again: The band plans to release the final album made with its frontman.
'It would be a great gift to the fans,' Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil told Rolling Stone. 'And I do think about this, and I don't know how strange this sounds, but I feel like it's a gift to Chris too.'

The group, which was just announced as inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, plans to finish the LP that they never completed before Cornell's death at 52.
'Our objective and goal was always to complete that [album],' Thayil said.
'I probably have OCD enough to not want to leave something unfinished or incomplete like that,' he continued.
5 'We want to do it proud,' said Soungarden guitarist Kim Thayil of the band's final album with late frontman Chris Cornell.
Thayil noted a desire to 'attend to our body of work and our catalog.'
'I think everyone in the band feels that way,' he said. 'I don't just to attend to my work, but the collective work, and in this case specifically, the work of Chris.'
It continues the pride that Thayil has always taken in Soundgarden since the 'Spoonman' band formed in 1984 and became a part of the Seattle grunge movement with Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

'I have pride for what I did and I want to see that come out,' he said. 'It doesn't exist in the vacuum. It exists as a collaboration with Matt [Cameron, drummer] and Ben [Shepherd, bassist] and Chris, but it takes on an entirely different weight when you think about what it is you're honoring, and the work that you're paying tribute to.
'It is us collectively. We want to do it proud. And that part of us is certainly one of the most intimate components of what Soundgarden has been since 1984.'
On April 27, Soundgarden — including original bassist Hiro Yamamoto — was announced as part of the class of 2025 in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with Cyndi Lauper, Chubby Checker, OutKast, Bad Company, the White Stripes and Joe Cocker.
Thayil told Billboard that Cornell would 'definitely be stoked' about the induction for the band, which was previously nominated in 2020 and 2023.

'He's the one who convinced me how appreciative the fans and our peers and the Soundgarden community — that includes the people that we work with and work for us — would be about it,' Thayil said. 'He realized how important that was, and he understood that would be important to us because it's important to people who cared about us and helped us and supported us all along.
'That's how I believe Chris would respond to this. I think he'd be very appreciative and thankful to all the people who have believed in him and believed in the work he did and the work that we all did, collectively.'

In the essays of Jamaica Kincaid, the obsessions and fascinations of a singular writer

Kincaid was also writing for The Village Voice, Ms., and Rolling Stone, where she published essays like 1977's 'Jamaica Kincaid's New York' and 'Antigua Crossings: A Deep and Blue Passage on the Caribbean Sea' in 1978. These essays demonstrate, on one hand, that very early in her career, she'd identified the elemental music of her unique prose style (Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s introduction explains that Kincaid writes with 'a driving, unremitting eye — though never without humor') and, on the other hand, that in her Caribbean familial story she'd located the limestone foundation on which to build her future efforts in fiction and nonfiction. Kincaid had already begun cultivating an array of overlapping, perennial obsessions: matriarchal power and mothers (specifically her own), banishment and excommunication from family structures, the British empire, colonial literary education, Antigua, and travel. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Related : Advertisement Several times in 'Putting Myself Together' Kincaid details the scene of her original subjection: when she was nine, her mother shipped her off to Dominica to live with her maternal grandmother and aunt. In the 2000 essay 'Islander Once, Now a Voyager,' Kincaid re-enters that wound: 'The first time I traveled anywhere, I was not yet a writer, but I can now see that I must have been in the process of becoming one. I was nine years old and had been the only child in my family until then, when, suddenly it seemed to me, my first brother was born. My mother no longer paid any attention to me; she seemed to care only about my new brother. One day, I was asked to hold him and he fell out of my arms. My mother said that I had dropped him, and as a punishment, she sent me off to live with her sister and her parents, all of whom she hated.' Advertisement Writing in the introduction to her 1996 edition of 'The Best American Essays,' Kincaid recalled that her early teachers taught her that the essay's formal principles require writers to make statements, build upon those statements, and sum up their building. '[H]ow dry, how impossible,' she writes of such formulae, and then of her realization that 'this definition was meant to be a restriction, and it worked very well; for how could I express any truth about myself or anything I might know in the form of state, build, and sum up when everything about me and everything I knew existed in a state of rage, rage, and more rage. I came into being in the colonial situation. It does not lend itself to any literary situation that is in existence. Not to me, anyway.' Kincaid iterates certain anecdotes and histories, both intimate and colonial, because her conception of the essay form demands a kind of elliptical experimentation, recycling expulsions, eras, poems, slavers, sailors, and crimes to reveal new layers of insight and truth. Though Kincaid is most frequently identified as an accomplished novelist — ' Advertisement In 'Putting Myself Together,' Kincaid's meditative essayettes and longform personal essays about gardens and gardening for Architectural Digest, The Paris Review, and Book Post, a Substack magazine, enhance her catalog significantly. In some of these she pivots from writing about 'myself, my mother, the place where I had grown up, myself and my mother again,' and enters the garden as a reader, taking up gardening catalogs and tomes about 'landscape design and also from accounts of Explorers and Conquerors.' The garden becomes 'an essential part of that thing called history' from Columbus to Thomas Jefferson to the Bloomsbury Group. Related : Yet, the garden holds all the world's concerns and all of Kincaid's obsessions, so, eventually, her ending returns to reading, her mother, and writing. Though arranged chronologically, the new book is a finely made garden: teeming, various, surprising. And she leaves readers desiring more. 'Putting Myself Together' 'will have some satisfaction — not complete satisfaction, only some satisfaction,' as she writes in her introduction to 'My Favorite Plant.' 'A garden,' she continues, 'no matter how good it is, must never completely satisfy. The world as we know it, after all, began in a very good garden, a completely satisfying garden — Paradise — but after a while the owner and the occupants wanted more.' OMG Girlz Announce First Tour ‘the Name Stays' Following Tiny, T.I.'s Legal Battle With Doll Company

OMG Girlz is officially back. Rolling Stone can exclusively reveal that the girl group — central to T.I. and Tiny's complicated court win last year — is reuniting for a brief, first-ever headlining tour. The tour has a tongue-in-cheek reference to the yearslong legal battle: The Name Stays Tour. 'The OMG Girlz never stopped being 'OMG.' We have always been sisters and have relished every opportunity to work together,' the group tells Rolling Stone. 'We shifted gears for a bit to focus on our personal lives—including motherhood and exploring our creativity as individual artists, but we always planned on making music together again.' More from Rolling Stone Seventeen Will Bring 'New_' Tour to U.S. Amid Four Members' Military Service Sam Smith Feels Light as a Feather on New Single 'To Be Free' Kaytranada and Justice Will Embark on Co-Headlining North America Tour Zonnique 'Star' Pullins, Bahja 'Beauty' Rodriguez, and Breaunna 'Babydoll' Womack will kick off their four-night run on Aug. 30 with a show in Atlanta, before stopping in New York City, D.C, and Dallas. Tickets are on sale now. The tour marks their live comeback after dropping a pair of singles, 'Make a Scene' in March and 'Tea' last week. The group says that the fight for their brand and intellectual property in court allowed the group time to 're-record some of our old music' and record new songs as well. 'We are so grateful to Tip and Tiny for helping us keep this dream alive, and for all of the love and resources they have and continue to pour into our creative endeavors,' the trio says of the Harrises. (Star is the daughter of Tiny.) 'We are excited to paint ATL, Dallas, NYC, and DC pink, purple, and blue!' Last September, T.I. and Tiny were originally awarded $71.4 million in damages from MGA Entertainment, the toy company behind L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls. The couple had filed a first lawsuit in 2021, alleging that MGA copied the image and likeness of the OMG Girlz — the pop-R&B group they formed in 2009 and disbanded in 2015 — for a handful of dolls launched in 2019. MGA challenged the outcome of the lawsuit this year, calling the punitive damages given 'constitutionally excessive.' A judge slashed the $53.6 million punitive award down to $1 while leaving the $17.9 million award for compensatory damages in place. The judge claimed that evidence at trial failed to show MGA designers 'willfully' copied the OMG Girlz. Earlier this month, the Harrises filed paperwork looking for a fourth trial to recover the slashed award. While the Name Stays Tour is OMG Girlz's first headlining run ever, the group reunited in 2023 and joined Xscape and SWV's Queens of R&B Tour last year. Tom Cruise's relationship history: A look back amid Ana De Armas rumors

A Hollywood staple since the '80s, Tom Cruise is a leading man both on and off the screen. The "Top Gun" actor, 63, has been in and out of high-profile relationships since his rise to fame. His storied romantic history includes marriages to A-list actresses Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, as well as nearly a dozen other entanglements over the years. And a rumored tie to actress Ana De Armas has reignited an interest in Cruise's love life. Though he has spoken very little about his relationships over the years (aside from one notable exception on Oprah's couch), speculation continues to fuel public fascination. As Cruise's public outings with "Knives Out" star Armas, 37, keep the internet abuzz, here's a look back at his dating history. Tom Cruise's first marriage: Mimi Rogers, 1987-90 Cruise wed "The Rapture" actress Mimi Rogers in 1987, the first of his three marriages. Rogers reportedly introduced Cruise to the Church of Scientology, of which he is still a member and has long been an advocate. When they married, Rogers was 32 while Cruise was 24. The two dated in the '80s after meeting at a dinner party. In an interview with the Sun Sentinel, Rogers implied that friends had set them up, while Cruise recalled to Rolling Stone in June 1986 that his future wife "was dating a friend" when they met. He added, "I thought she was extremely bright." Their wedding, which they referred to using the codeword "The Project," was a "very small, very private and completely normal" ceremony on May 9, 1987, Rogers told the Sun Sentinel. In another Rolling Stone interview, Cruise was effusive in expressing his love for Rogers. "Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot. I think it's helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything," he told the outlet in 1990. "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her." Less than a week after the Rolling Stone cover story was published, Rogers and Cruise announced they were divorcing. "While there have been very positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time," the pair said in a joint statement at the time. Second marriage: Nicole Kidman, 1990-2001 By the end of 1990, Cruise had thrown himself into a new marriage: this time with fellow A-lister Nicole Kidman. The two married on Dec. 24, 1990, months after meeting on the set of "Days of Thunder." Kidman was 23 and Cruise was 28. "I thought he was the sexiest man I'd ever seen in my life," Kidman told Vanity Fair in a 1995 interview. "So it started on lust." Cruise agreed the relationship started with "instant lust," but added that marrying the "Moulin Rouge!" actress was "the best decision I ever made." "I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning. It grew into love and respect," he told the magazine. "I knew she was it for me. I absolutely knew — I just knew it. I thought, 'This is the person to be able to share all of who I am with, and her with me.'" In that same interview, Kidman confirmed she was a Scientologist but declined to elaborate on it because "it gets misinterpreted and misrepresented." Over their decade-long marriage, the two welcomed two children – Isabella, 32, and Connor, 30, before announcing their split in Feb. 2001. Kidman shared later in a 2007 Marie Claire interview that at the beginning of their union, she'd experienced an ectopic pregnancy, a dangerous condition that occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus. She then had a miscarriage at the end of their marriage. "It was incredibly traumatic for me," she told the magazine. A few years later, Kidman mused that her age had factored into the split with Cruise, telling Vanity Fair in 2013: "I was a child, really, when I got married. And I needed to grow up." Third marriage: Katie Holmes, 2006-2012 Cruise made his debut with "Dawson's Creek" star Katie Holmes in 2005, getting engaged in front of the Eiffel Tower that summer and welcoming their daughter, Suri Cruise, now 19, in April 2006. They married in November 2006, at a medieval castle in the town of Bracciano, located outside of Rome. Holmes was 27. Cruise was 44. The ceremony reportedly had a star-studded guest list, with attendees that included Steven Spielberg, Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Jim Carrey. This was the romance that inspired Cruise, who was promoting "War of the Worlds" at the time, to hop atop a couch during a bizarre "Oprah Winfrey Show" sit-down. The stunt had Winfrey declaring, "We've never seen you behave this way before." The couple's five-year relationship provided ample fodder for tabloids, as Cruise and Holmes developed the couple name "TomKat." As such, their 2012 divorce was met with a media frenzy. Announcing their divorce in a joint statement at the time, the pair wrote: "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents." Reports at the time noted that one of the reasons for the split was that Holmes wanted to raise their daughter outside the Church of Scientology. Tom Cruise dated Penélope Cruz, was also linked to Cher and Melissa Gilbert During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" in 2017, Melissa Gilbert confirmed she dated Cruise (at the time known as Tom Mapother) at "16 or 17," which would put Cruise around 18 or 19 years old. "We made out, but honestly, there was no sex," she told Cohen. Cher, who reportedly also dated Cruise in the 1980s, told Cohen in 2013 that Cruise was among her top five best lovers. Cruise has also been linked to singer-songwriter Patti Scialfa, who is now married to Bruce Springsteen, and his "Risky Business" co-star Rebecca De Mornay. In the early 2000s, Cruise dated his "Vanilla Sky" co-star Penélope Cruz for a few years. Now, fans have begun to speculate that Armas is his latest leading lady, as photographers have caught the pair globe-trotting in recent times.
