State govt. has neither shirked responsibility nor is defending stampede: Priyank Kharge

The Hindu06-06-2025

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Priyank Kharge clarified that the State government has neither shirked responsibility nor is defending the stampede that occurred during the RCB victory celebrations at Bengaluru on Wednesday evening (June 4, 2025) in which 11 people died.
'We are all pained by the deaths of youths, and the tragic incident is not a matter of pride for any government,' he grieved.
Addressing presspersons in Kalaburagi city on Friday Mr. Kharge reiterated that he was not defending the stampede incident and claimed that there were lapses in planning on the part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)-the cricket team of IPL, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI). If there was any faults on the government's part, the investigation will unearth the truth, he added.
He explained that, citing security concerns the State government had denied permission for the victory parade, and the BJP leaders objected to this decision and tweeted against it-which they later deleted. He urged BJP not stoop so low to politicise the tragic incident. 'The State government has expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and announced compensation, meanwhile a judicial magistrate inquiry is underway and even the police officials have been suspended,' Mr. Kharge added.
Responding sharply to BJP's demand for the resignation of the Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Mr. Kharge stated that similar standards must apply to all incidents and he questioned whether anyone had demanded the resignation of the Union Home Minister or the External Affairs Minister over the recent Pahalgam terror attack incident.
Crop Insurance
The Minister said that the State government had released a crop insurance of ₹341 crore for Kalaburagi district during the last monsoon season, the Congress-led State government was fully committed for furthering the welfare of farmers, and we have prioritized increasing the number of farmers covered under the insurance scheme, he said.
State may face DAP shortage
Mr. Kharge cautioned that the State may face shortage of DAP this Kharif season, as Karnataka has received only 42% of the required quantity of the fertilizer so far. He alleged that the Central government has diverted our share to Bihar, and our Agriculture Minister (N. Cheluvarayaswamy) has been in talks with the central government regarding the necessary supply of fertilizers, he said.

Karnataka Minister says Congress will ban RSS if party comes to power at Centre

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Tuesday said that if the Congress returns to power at the Centre, it would impose a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). 'If Congress comes to power in the Centre again, we will ban RSS,' Kharge said. He argued that the RSS spreads hatred in society and does not operate within the bounds of the law. advertisementKharge referred to historical precedents to defend his stance, stating, 'Didn't Sardar Patel ban the RSS? They fell at his feet and assured they would follow the law of the land. Didn't Indira Gandhi ban the RSS? They did the same again. Even now, they are only pretending to follow the law. What is the source of their Rs 250 crore funding? These things must be investigated.' 'The job of the legislature is to legislate. We will bring in necessary legislation, but I cannot act beyond the ambit of the Constitution,' he June 27, in a post on X, Kharge listed what he described as a historical record of the RSS's actions, Kharge said the organisation did not participate in the Salt Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement, or any other mass movements for India's independence. He alleged that the RSS had opposed the tricolour flag on the eve of independence, distributed sweets after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, and campaigned for the Manusmriti to be implemented instead of the concluded by stating that the RSS remains opposed to both the Constitution and the national flag, and claimed that the BJP acts as its puppet. 'The RSS is acutely aware that the Constitution stands between them and their ideological aspirations. However, it is crucial to remember that the Constitution's preservation will be fiercely defended by Indians who are united in their commitment to democracy, diversity and equality,' he said.'We should not have lifted the ban on RSS,' Kharge added.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

‘Super premium frequent flier PM' off on 5-nation jaunt?: Cong jabs Modi ahead of visit

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit abroad, the Congress on Tuesday said the 'frequent flier PM' is off on a 5-nation 'jaunt' and alleged that he is running away from four issues, including the Manipur situation and US President Donald Trump's claims about bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also alleged that the prime minister is running away from the 'revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions'. Prime Minister Modi will embark on a five-nation tour beginning July 2 to participate in the BRICS Summit in Brazil and expand India's ties with several key nations of the Global South. 'When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt,' Ramesh said in a post on X. Ramesh alleged that the PM is running away from Manipur, 'which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed'. The Congress leader claimed that PM Modi is also running away from revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor 'because of the PM's decisions'. His remarks were an apparent reference to the reported comments of India's defence attache to Indonesia. However, the Indian embassy in Indonesia, in a post on X on Sunday, had said that the defence attache's remarks have been 'quoted out of context and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker'. Ramesh also claimed that the PM is running away from the continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick. He further alleged that the PM is running away from 'the continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice even after 70 days'. 'The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024),' Ramesh said. Besides Brazil, Modi will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia during the eight-day trip, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). In the first leg of the visit, Modi will undertake a visit to Ghana from July 2 to 3. From Ghana, Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. In the third leg of his visit, Modi will visit Argentina from July 4 to 5. In the fourth leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The prime minister will visit Brazil from July 5 to 8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit followed by a state visit. In the final leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Namibia.
