
Some fish feel excruciating pain for up to 20 minutes after catch, scientists find
The research, published in Scientific Reports, reveals the hidden pain of fish during slaughter and offers solutions to improve their welfare.
Researchers hope the findings can help improve the welfare of up to 2.2 trillion wild and 171 billion farmed fish killed every year for human consumption.
In the study, scientists focussed on a common method of slaughtering fish called air asphyxiation. Animal welfare groups have flagged this method, which involves depriving fish of oxygen, as inhumane given the significant amount of time they take to lose consciousness in this process.
Researchers found that rainbow trout endured an average of 10 minutes of intense pain during this process, with estimates ranging from 2 to 22 minutes depending on factors like fish size and water temperature.
'Based on a review of research on stress responses during asphyxiation, we estimate 10 min of moderate to intense pain per trout,' they wrote.
The study cautioned that chilling fish in ice slurry after being caught could cause an even greater burden of pain. 'By slowing down metabolic processes, lower temperatures may extend the time to unconsciousness,' it noted.
Looking at other interventions, researchers found that if implemented properly, electrical stunning could avert 1 to 20 hours of moderate to extreme pain experienced by fish for every US dollar spent on slaughtering them.
Another method called percussive stunning, which involves dealing a blow to an animal's head with special devices, could kill fish quickly without much suffering but faced 'implementation challenges', researchers said, adding that other pre-slaughter practices like fish crowding during transport might cause even greater suffering.
The study also highlights the use of the Welfare Footprint Framework, a method to quantify animal welfare by estimating the total time they spend in various states of suffering or well-being.
It uses time-based values to subjective experiences for direct comparisons between different animal welfare interventions.
"The Welfare Footprint Framework provides a rigorous and transparent evidence-based approach to measuring animal welfare and enables informed decisions about where to allocate resources for the greatest impact,' Wladimir Alonso, an author of the study, said.
'These findings provide transparent, evidence-grounded and comparable metrics to guide cost–benefit decisions and inform slaughter regulations and practices in trout.'

Astronauts set for launch to ISS as US, Russian space chiefs plan rare meeting
WASHINGTON, July 31 (Reuters) - The heads of NASA and Russia's space agency will watch American, Russian, and Japanese astronauts launch to the International Space Station from Florida on Thursday, a routine crew rotation flight coinciding with a rare face-to-face meeting between U.S. and Russian space program chiefs. The four-person astronaut crew arrived at SpaceX's launchpad Thursday morning at NASA's Kennedy Space Center ahead of their 12:09 pm ET (1609 GMT) launch to space, where they will spend 39 hours traveling aboard SpaceX's Dragon craft to the orbiting science lab for a mission lasting at least six months. The head of Russia's space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Bakanov, and his staff are in Florida for the launch. He plans to meet acting NASA administrator Sean Duffy, who took on the space chief role this month, and is also the head of the U.S. Department of Transportation. That will mark the first in-person meeting between U.S. and Russian space agency chiefs since 2018, and a significant moment for a new NASA administrator who has emphasized he is serving only in an acting capacity. While U.S.-Russian tensions over the war in Ukraine limited contact between the two space agencies, they have continued to share astronaut flights and cooperate on the ISS, a 25-year-old totem of scientific diplomacy crucial to maintaining the two space powers' storied human spaceflight capabilities. Bakanov and Duffy are expected to discuss extending the two countries' astronaut seat exchange agreement - in which U.S. astronauts fly on Russian Soyuz capsules in exchange for Russian astronauts flying on U.S. capsules - and the planned disposal of the ISS in 2030, according to Russian news agency TASS. Thursday's mission, called Crew-11, includes NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Michael Fincke, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, and Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui. They dock at the ISS around 3 a.m. ET (0700 GMT) on Saturday and replace the Crew-10 crew on the ISS, which departs August 6. Longest lightning bolt on record stretches 515 miles across US
It's one of the most powerful natural phenomena that occurs on Earth. Now, scientists have recorded the longest lightning bolt in history. The record–breaking 'megaflash' took place during a major thunderstorm back in October 2017. It extended 515 miles from eastern Texas to near Kansas City – 38 miles longer than the previous record. To put that into perspective, that's about twice the length of the Grand Canyon, or the equivalent of the distance between Paris and Venice. If you were to cover 515 miles in a car, you'd be facing a nine-hour drive, while a flight would take at least 90 minutes, experts say. Researchers from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) hope the discovery will highlight just how far lightning can reach from its parent storm. 'Lightning is a source of wonder but also a major hazard that claims many lives around the world every year and is therefore one of the priorities for the international Early Warnings for All initiative,' said Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General. 'These new findings highlight important public safety concerns about electrified clouds which can produce flashes which travel extremely large distances and have a major impact on the aviation sector and can spark wildfires.' For years, lightning detection and measurement has relied on ground-based stations. However, satellite-borne lightning detectors in orbit since 2017 have now made it possible to continuously detect and measure lightning at continental-scale distances. 'The extremes of what lightning is capable of is difficult to study because it pushes the boundaries of what we can practically observe,' said Michael J. Peterson, lead author from the Georgia Institute of Technology. 'Adding continuous measurements from geostationary orbit was a major advance. 'We are now at a point where most of the global megaflash hotspots are covered by a geostationary satellite, and data processing techniques have improved to properly represent flashes in the vast quantity of observational data at all scales. 'Over time as the data record continues to expand, we will be able to observe even the rarest types of extreme lightning on Earth and investigate the broad impacts of lightning on society.' The record-breaking megaflash surpasses the previous record set by a lightning strike during an April 2020 storm , which reached 477 miles across the southern US. 'This new record clearly demonstrates the incredible power of the natural environment,' said Professor Randall Cerveny, rapporteur of Weather and Climate Extremes for WMO. 'Additionally, WMO assessment of environmental extremes such as this lightning distance record testify to the significant scientific progress in observing, documenting and evaluating such events. 'It is likely that even greater extremes still exist, and that we will be able to observe them as additional high-quality lightning measurements accumulate over time.' Most lightning flashes reach less than 10-miles long. However, anything longer than 60 miles is considered a 'megaflash'. Megaflashes arise from long-lasting storms, which typically brew for 14 hours or more, and cover an enormous area. Beyond the October 2017 megaflash, several other record-breaking lightning strikes have hit the headlines over the years. The greatest duration for a single lightning flash of 17.1 seconds was set during a thunderstorm over Uruguay and northern Argentina on 18 June 2020. Meanwhile, the worst direct strike saw 21 people killed by a single flash of lightning in Zimbabwe in 1975. What's more, a staggering 469 people were in killed by an indirect strike in Dronka, Egypt, in 1994, when lightning struck a set of oil tanks, causing burning oil to flood the town. The researchers hope the findings will highlight the fact that lightning is capable of travelling many hundreds of miles from the source. 'The only lightning-safe locations are substantial buildings that have wiring and plumbing; not structures such as at a beach or bus stop,' said lightning specialist, Walt Lyons.
