Thiruvananthapuram Corporation forms special squad to monitor waste dumping in 10 wards surrounding airport
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on Thursday decided to form a special squad to prevent dumping of waste, including slaughter waste, in 10 wards within four km radius of the Thiruvananthapuram international airport as part of measures to prevent bird hits. The squads, consisting of health inspectors from various circles, will work in three shifts and will be present on the ground round-the-clock.
'Through the efforts of the Corporation over the past few months, the number of bird hits, which was above 11 last year, has now come down to less than four. We want to reduce this further and ensure that flights do not face any danger from bird hits. The special squads have been deployed with this aim, focussing on the area from Kumarichantha onwards, from where the aircrafts fly low for landing, and the area till Lulu Mall, which is in the take off path,' said S. Jahamgeer, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation secretary.
The squads will carry out regular checks in possible areas of waste dumping, including markets, areas near slaughter houses, common areas and house compounds. The waste will be segregated and collected in the Corporation's vehicles to be taken to material collection facilities or aerobic bins.
Lodge FIR
In case of illegal waste dumping, the squads have been directed to capture live videos and photographs as proof and lodge an FIR under the Municipal Act 1994, Aircraft Rules 1934 and the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016. The squads can also take the help of police personnel to carry out joint checks, if required.
Daily reports on the monitoring activities will be submitted to the project secretariat. The squads will also carry out awareness campaigns targeting the traders and residents of the area.

The Corporation on Friday issued notices to the owners of the shops selling meat and fish in the area to install glass panels or transparent polythene covers at the front to prevent birds from getting attracted. The owners have been given 10 days to comply with the requirement.
The squads will also map the waste dumping hotspots in the 10 wards. The Corporation has formed a WhatsApp group with the authorities of the city airport to monitor waste management activities.

Eight persons arrested by City Crime Bureau; Gang caused Rs. 1.5 crore loss to urban local body by reducing property tax demand Madurai: A small loophole in a software used for property tax collection by Madurai Corporation was misused by some employees in causing loss to the urban local body to the tune of ₹1.5 crore by unilaterally 'reducing' property tax. Shocked over the sudden 'fall' in the arrears of top 100 property tax assessees during a routine review of tax collection, the then Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar launched a secret investigation into the scam. The probe by a team of officials revealed that a gang, including Corporation employees and contract employees, were involved in tampering with the property tax demand without the knowledge of Corporation officials. 'The gang was emboldened by the loophole in the software and using the login passwords of over 10 bill collectors, they reduced property tax demand for a consideration,' an official said. However, they were not aware that reducing the property tax demand would lead to reduced property tax arrears. 'The gang also wrote off the difference in arrears to the property tax assesses,' the official added. After the internal probe into the property tax between April 1, 2024 and July 31, 2024 revealed a nexus among Corporation employees and officials at different levels, a formal complaint was lodged with Madurai City Police in September 2024. Subsequently, the City Crime Bureau probed the crime and registered a case for cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, falsification of accounts and under the provisions of Information Technology Act. The CCB probe revealed that the gang had tampered with the property tax for at least 150 tax assessees in Zone III of Madurai Corporation. The city police have so far arrested eight persons, including data entry operators, assistant programmers and engineers. Meanwhile, a Corporation official said that the loophole in the software had been plugged immediately. Involvement of contract employees for data entry has resulted in similar scams in different departments in Virudhunagar district in the past.

Corruption allegations against BJP councillors roil Thiruvananthapuram Corporation council meeting
Corruption allegations against two councillors of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) roiled a council meeting of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on Thursday, with the councillors of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) demanding the resignation of the accused. Councillors of the rival parties nearly came to blows on more than one occasion in a tense meeting in which no other agenda was discussed. The LDF councillors, who came with placards against the councillors, accused Punnakkamugal councillor P.V. Manju of aiding a coverup in the alleged misappropriation of around ₹3 lakh collected by the local Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) unit as user fee from households in the ward. The issue came to light when some of the members of the unit raised a complaint with the junior health inspector that their monthly wages, which is dependent on the user fee, was delayed. The LDF accused Ms. Manju of organising a meeting at her house to hush up the issue. After media report Though Ms. Manju claimed that she had lodged a complaint with the Poojappura police station on June 23, Mayor Arya Rajendran said that the councillor lodged the complaint only after the media reported it. Although the HKS members had earlier informed her about the issue, she did not report it to the officials concerned. A team led by the Corporation secretary will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations. The Corporation has also lodged a complaint with the Poojappura police station, said the Mayor. The other allegation was against Pappanamcode councillor G.S. Asha Nath, whom the LDF accused of collecting money from beneficiaries for providing the Corporation's application for various schemes. The allegations were based on a social media post that she had made earlier this month in which she claimed that a person who is no longer an office-bearer of the BJP has been collecting money illegally in her name for providing application forms. The LDF alleged that the councillor put up the post as a face saver. Allegations were also raised against Thirumala councillor K. Anil Kumar, who was not present at the meeting, of threatening the Haritha Karma Sena workers to join the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), the trade union affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Bharat Mata stickers The entire meeting was drowned in sloganeering and shouting matches. The BJP councillors, all of whom had pinned Bharat Mata stickers on their attire in protest over the ongoing Bharat Mata row, walked into the well of the council hall and got into shouting matches with the LDF councillors. The women councillors of the BJP stepped on to the dais, blocking the Mayor's view as she addressed the council, prompting the women councillors of the LDF to line up behind the Mayor. Ms. Rajendran accused one of the BJP councillors of abusing her family members. The meeting concluded with the passing of all agendas amid the loud sloganeering from both sides.
