Packers CB Nate Hobbs has knee surgery, hopes to return for regular season opener
With a month to go until the regular season opener, the Green Bay Packers' cornerback room has taken a hit. Nate Hobbs had surgery on his knee according to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber, which has been described as a 'minor procedure.' Hobbs' timetable for return is expected to be around three weeks, which would still give him a week to ramp up for Green Bay's first game of the season, when they face the defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. The surgery is believed to be preventative, cleaning up an issue which Hobbs may have been able to play through if necessary. Still, the Packers and their corner took the more cautious approach to ensure he is healthy for the long haul, rather than risking the knee issue becoming more chronic. Hobbs missed Green Bay's last two practices, including Family Night, where general manager Brian Gutekunst first gave details on the severity of the injury the newly signed corner is dealing with. Speaking at the annual open practice at Lambeau Field, Gutekunst said of Hobbs: 'We won't see him tonight, he's gonna be working through some things over the next couple of weeks.' The injury likely means Hobbs misses all of Green Bay's preseason games, although it is unlikely he would have featured much as a nailed on starter. The joint practices with the Colts and Seahawks could have been beneficial to be involved in, but it appears Hobbs will be absent for those as well. Green Bay was able to make a timely transaction Monday which could help cover for Hobbs for the rest of training camp or potentially into the regular season if there are any unforeseen setbacks with his recovery. Corey Ballentine was re-signed for a second stint with the Packers after being released by the Colts last week, with Green Bay releasing fellow cornerback Gregory Junior in a corresponding move. Ballentine, 29, was a core special teamer for Green Bay in his first spell, but also provided solid cornerback play in 2023 especially, when he played more extensive snaps on defense. In the 11 games Ballentine played 15 or more coverage snaps for the Packers between 2023 and 2024, he had an average PFF coverage grade of 61.7, just above an average grade. Hobbs signed with Green Bay on a four-year, $48 million contract on the first day of free agency back in March, and has made headlines for his aggressive, assertive playstyle so far in camp. It has sometimes been to a fault, as he has been spoken to by the coaching staff on multiple occasions, first for laying a hit on Dontayvion Wicks in a non-padded practice, then for going low for a tackle on MarShawn Lloyd in a practice where players were told not to go to ground. He was removed from team drills for a few plays for his second infraction, but Green Bay's coaches have also gushed about the intensity and energy Hobbs has brought to the team. At Family Night, Gutekunst praised Hobbs for his versatility to play both in the slot and on the perimeter, and said he has: 'All the aggressiveness and physicality we were looking for when we brought him in here.' The Packers will have to make do without the tone-setting presence of Hobbs for the next few weeks.

There's something incredibly special about fall sports. Between college football, NFL and MLB postseason, there is fun to be had for all — particularly when it comes to laying a few wagers. That's where I come in. One of the wagers below features Kyle Shanahan, and it's what I believe to be a really solid bet. Let's take a look at where I'm sprinkling my cash this week. Penn State to make the CFP This is my favorite bet in college football this season. No team in the sport is more predictable or trustworthy than Penn State, which usually hammers the teams it is supposed to, and loses to top-five, top-10-type teams. This puts the Nittany Lions at a 10-2 floor, as they have both Oregon and Ohio State on the slate. The Oregon game is at State College, so let's say PSU wins that game. Maybe the game at Iowa is tricky? Potentially lose at Ohio State? That's it. Even the detractors of Drew Allar have to think Penn State is returning to the College Football Playoff behind a powerful running game and elite defense, even without Abdul Carter. Some people do not like laying a price like this, but I have no issue doing so. A 10-2 record and a CFP berth for Penn State — book it. PICK: Penn State (-290) to make the CFP Penn State HC James Franklin on what makes Drew Allar special Kyle Shanahan to win Coach of the Year Just about everything that could go wrong for the 49ers last year did. Injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and others. Blown late leads. It was just one of those years in the Bay after another agonizing Super Bowl loss. There isn't a ton of depth here, but injury luck doesn't tend to repeat itself in consecutive years, meaning expect the Niners to be healthier this season. The schedule is about as easy as could be coming off a 6-11 season, and, with a win total of 10.5, the Niners are supposed to be good. ADVERTISEMENT Robert Saleh returns to San Francisco to coach a defense that has played as if it missed his leadership over the last couple of seasons. Maybe Shanahan doesn't fit the mold of a young head coach or a head coach from a team that's going to surprise, but there's a chance the Niners could post something like 12-5 and win the division, given that schedule, especially if the concerns over Rams QB Matthew Stafford are realized. I just don't get how guys like Aaron Glenn are shorter-priced in this market, given how the Jets are going to win like six games. PICK: Kyle Shanahan (20-1) to win Coach of the Year Clayton McCullough to win NL Manager of the Year Okay, by now we've all made the joke, "Can you name the Marlins manager?" But Clayton McCullough and the Marlins might be getting the last laugh. The former Dodgers first-base coach has Miami on the cusp of a .500 record after sweeping the Yankees. While it might be a little too much to ask him to reach the playoffs given the strength of the current NL wild cards, it's not unreasonable to think he's in the mix for NL Manager of the Year consideration. This has been a lineup and rotation in flux all season and if Miami actually got some decent pitching from Sandy Alcántara in the first half of the season, it might actually have a legit chance at a wild card. Brewers manager Pat Murphy is a big favorite here, and I guess he should be. But in terms of doing more with less, McCullough certainly deserves consideration if the Marlins finish with a winning record. Obviously, I'm late to the party here in terms of the number, but I'll jump in now in case they continue this hot streak. PICK: Clayton McCullough (23-1) to win NL Manager of the Year Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. National Football League Jerry Jones' Handling of Micah Parsons Dispute Is 'Unethical,' Says Nick Wright Published Aug. 4, 2025 10:12 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Another day has passed, and Micah Parsons still doesn't have a new deal with the Dallas Cowboys. One day after Parsons' fiery trade request on Aug. 1 , owner Jerry Jones had a brazen response to growing concerns surrounding the situation, insisting the standoff with the All-Pro pass rusher is no different from past situations he has dealt with. "Don't lose any sleep over it," Jones said . "That's the one thing I would say to our fans." That led FOX Sports' Nick Wright to outwardly criticize Jones on Monday's edition of "First Things First." "The entire … press gathering was kind of surreal, even by Jerry's standards," he said. "The whole thing was bizarre, but what is very, very clear to me is two things. One of which is: Jerry feels like they (he and Parsons) had an agreement, and he wants to stick to it — and I think that that is an unethical way to do business. … My other big takeaway is this: Jerry wants to be the star of this negotiation. He made that very clear. … "I think ultimately it (a new deal) gets done. I don't think Micah gets traded. I think Jerry ends up caving, but I also think … even if it gets done, they damaged the relationship significantly." ADVERTISEMENT Parsons and the Cowboys began contract discussions in January. Some discourse arose in April when Jones mentioned at the NFL's annual league meeting that he was communicating directly with Parsons about a potential new deal, while Parsons let it be known that he wouldn't be doing any deal without his agent, David Mulugheta, involved. In June, Parsons said that he was "hanging in tight" and "hopeful" that he'd have a new deal done before the start of training camp on July 20. One day before the start of camp, Jones seemingly questioned Parsons' durability by mentioning he missed a handful of games because of a high ankle sprain last season — the first time the 26-year-old had dealt with an injury in his professional career — when asked by reporters for an update on the negotiations. While Parsons didn't directly respond to Jones' comment, he reshared a social media post from former NFL star J.J. Watt that read, in part, "Anytime you can publicly take a dig at your star quarterback and your star pass rusher simultaneously, right before the season begins, you just gotta take it." Parsons had reported to camp in Oxnard, California, but only observed from the sidelines and did not participate. [MORE: Micah Parsons Next Team Odds: Will Cowboys Trade Star DE?] Parsons made a formal trade request this month, calling out the Jones family for how they've handled contract negotiations and revealing that they haven't "had a single conversation" with his agent. "I no longer want to be here," Parsons wrote in a 1,000-plus-word statement . "I no longer want to be held to close-door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me." Parsons went on to say that he and Jones met in March to "talk about leadership" and that the conversation turned into a contract discussion. "Yes, I engaged in a back and forth [with] regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation," Parsons revealed. "I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done. But when my agent reached out and spoke to (director of salary cap/player contracts) Adam Prasifka, he was told the deal was pretty much already done. My agent, of course, told him that wasn't the case and … again, the team decided to go silent." Jones added more fuel to the fire two days later, saying that former Cowboys star Dez Bryant — who publicly voiced his support for Parsons on social media — and Roc Nation Sports owner Jay-Z are the reason why he doesn't like to deal with agents in players' contract discussions. The 82-year-old told reporters that Jay-Z quit taking his calls after the two spent hours negotiating a new contract for Bryant in 2015, a claim that Roc Nation quickly refuted. A first-round draft pick in 2021, Parsons has at least 12.0 sacks in each of his four seasons in Dallas and has 52.5 for his career. He also had 12 tackles for loss in 13 games last season. Parsons is going into the fifth and final year of his rookie deal and could be franchise tagged in 2026 without an extension. He's set to make $24.007 million in 2025.
