Alibaba Fall After U.S. Throws Wrench in Apple's China AI Deal

Yahoo19-05-2025
Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) just took a hitfalling 4.8% in Hong Kongafter fresh headlines suggested the White House is pushing back on Apple's plan to bring Alibaba's AI to iPhones in China. The potential deal, once seen as a win-win, now faces political friction that could stall or even scrap the rollout. Apple (AAPL), Alibaba, and the U.S. government haven't commented, but behind the scenes, the pressure appears real enough to spook investors already on edge after Alibaba's earnings miss last week.
Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with BABA.
The timing couldn't be worse for Apple either. China is its second-largest market, and its sales there dipped 2.3% last quarter as competition from Huawei and Xiaomi heats up. Analysts warn that without a homegrown AI partner, Apple risks losing its edge in a market where AI-driven features are fast becoming table stakes. Apple has much more to lose than Alibaba if it walks away from the AI deal, noted Vey-Sern Ling at Union Bancaire Privee. A delay or breakdown could force Apple to scramble for alternatives, while its Chinese rivals double down.
For Alibaba, the setback throws a wrench into its comeback story. Investors had rallied behind the stock earlier this year on hopes that its AI momentumespecially with a high-profile partner like Applecould reignite growth. But with Washington's glare intensifying, that narrative could be slipping. Bloomberg Intelligence warns the uncertainty may hold back Alibaba's cloud investment and R&D in the short term. For now, one thing's becoming clearer: this isn't just a tech dealit's another geopolitical battleground.

Why FuboTV Stock Skyrocketed 206% in the First Half of the Year

Fubo soared on its merger announcement with Hulu + Live TV The move will triple Fubo's subscriber base, leading the stock to roughly triple. The business still faces challenges, including its lack of profitability. 10 stocks we like better than fuboTV › Shares of FuboTV (NYSE: FUBO) soared in the first half of the year, as the company agreed to a merger with Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS). According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the stock finished the first half of 2025 up 206%. The stock's gains came entirely from news of the merger, as the Disney deal, which will merge Fubo with Hulu + Live TV, values the sports streaming stock significantly higher than what it was trading for before the news. However, there was also other news out of Fubo, and the stock did pull back modestly following the merger announcement in January. As you can see from the chart, the stock soared on the announcement at the beginning of the year, and then drifted lower before rebounding with the broad market in May and June. The big news out on Fubo this year was, of course, the merger with Hulu + Live TV. According to the terms of the deal, Disney will own 70% of the combined company, which will continue trading under the Fubo ticker. The deal also resolved outstanding litigation between the two companies at the time, which was related to the Venu Sports joint venture that was later disbanded. The stock tripled on the news, because the move will triple Fubo's viewing audience, and Fubo will also receive a $220 million payment as a result of the agreement. While the move does make Fubo a significantly larger company, it might not be the simple value add that investors hope it will be. Fubo continued to be unprofitable into 2024, reporting an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) loss narrowed from $201 million to $86.1 million, while revenue grew 8% to $431.8 million. In the first quarter, meanwhile, revenue rose 3.5% to $407.9 million, and sees revenue declining in the second quarter. Additionally, the Department of Justice announced an investigation into the deal on antitrust grounds in April. Investors are still betting that the deal will go through, as the stock recovered strongly through May and June. The merger does appear to be the best outcome for Fubo, and Disney's reach, expertise, and experience with ESPN could help drive its success in the meantime. However, even if the deal stays on track, investors should expect the stock to be volatile, as the business is still losing money. Wedbush Is Betting Big on AMC Stock. Should You?

AMC Entertainment (AMC) shares rallied more than 10% on Friday after receiving a big vote of confidence from Alicia Reese, a senior Wedbush analyst. In her research note this morning, Reese upgraded the world's largest cinema chain to 'Outperform' and raised her price target to $4, indicating potential for another 20% upside from current levels. Despite today's surge, AMC stock is down more than 19% versus its year-to-date high in late May. Alicia Reese recommends buying AMC shares at current levels as they could meaningfully benefit from a 'more consistent release slate over the next several quarters.' AMC has the 'most premium screens in North America' – which she believes will help the NYSE-listed firm grow its market share not just in the second half of this year, but in 2026 as well. Additionally, AMC plans on growing its footprint in European Union and the United Kingdom, which may also contribute to significant further upside in its stock price, the Wedbush analyst added. Her bullish call is significant given AMC stock is already up more than 20% versus its YTD low. Investors should consider building a position in AMC stock also because the Hollywood box office has shown signs of a rebound in recent months. According to Alicia Reese, the movie theater company looks attractive also because its recent debt restructuring agreement 'relieves near-term uncertainty' and enables management to focus on operational growth. More importantly, the Wedbush analyst is convinced that AMC is now free from the need to issue more shares – effectively removing concerns of dilution. Note that Reese's bullish call on AMC shares is the first one the company has received since 2020. Despite Wedbush's positive view, investors should practice caution in buying AMC shares as the entertainment firm has a history of instability and is still broadly known as a meme stock. According to Barchart, the consensus rating on AMC stock remains at 'Hold' only with the mean target of about $3.12 indicating potential downside of some 8% from here.
