Astros On 'Lookout' for Pitching After Injury; Could Mitch Keller Trade Be Answer?

The Houston Astros will be among the teams pursuing starting pitching at the trade deadline in July.
After losing Ronel Blanco on Wednesday due to elbow surgery, the Astros' pitching depth is very thin. Entering Sunday, they were 31-27 and just a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported Sunday the Astros will pursue a starting pitcher at the deadline. He also reported the Pirates are putting everyone on the table to be traded except Oneil Cruz and Paul Skenes.
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California.
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California."The Houston Astros say they are on the lookout for starting pitching after losing Ronel Blanco," wrote Nightengale. "He is the third Astros starter to go down in the season's first two months, joining Hayden Wesneski who underwent Tommy John surgery last week, and Spencer Arrighetti (broken thumb). ... The Pittsburgh Pirates are flatly rebuking all interest from teams wanting to engage in trade talks for ace Paul Skenes, but will listen to offers on every other player but him and outfielder Oneil Cruz."
Keller is in the second year of his $77 million contract, so the Astros would have to pay the remainder of the $15.4 million he is owed this year plus the remaining $55.7 million
The Pirates and Astros have been trade partners in the past for starting pitching as Houston was the landing spot for Gerrit Cole when he left Pittsburgh. If Keller is traded to the Astros, Ben Cherington's challenge will be to get a better return for Keller than his predecessor did for Cole.
The Astros would have to cough up a considerable package for Keller since he has 3 1/2 years of team control remaining. This may deter them a bit, but it would all come down to a comparison between the cost for Keller and the cost for a rental at the deadline.
Through 12 starts this season, Keller has a 3.73 ERA with 56 strikeouts. His record isn't pretty, but that's due to a lack of run support. Pittsburgh has scored a total of six runs in his last five starts, and four of them have ended in losses.
Keller would be a good fit for the Astros, who would provide him with a lot more run support than the Pirates have this year. Houston would certainly get the most out of him as a pitcher as well.

Vanderbilt baseball signee Seth Hernandez to Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025 MLB Draft
Vanderbilt baseball's top signee will almost certainly not make it to campus as right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez was selected sixth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft on July 13. Hernandez was widely believed to be going pro rather than joining the Commodores throughout his senior season of high school. Viewed as one of the best high school right-handed pitching prospects ever, Hernandez touches 98 mph with his fastball. He was ranked the No. 2 prospect nationwide by Perfect Game and the No. 3 draft prospect by MLB Pipeline. He was also the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Though Hernandez is set to begin his pro career, the Commodores have several other good right-handed pitchers committed. That group includes Connor Hamilton, the top righty in the state of Tennessee, along with Tyler Baird, Wyatt Nadeau, Adria Casoliba and Nate Schlote. Desperate Yankees Urged To Avoid Reunion With $15 Million Infielder
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees desperately need to add an infielder to fill in at third base. The hot corner has been a massive hole in the Bronx for weeks now, and the front office needs to find a solid upgrade before the trade deadline passes by in a week and a half. FanSided's Rucker Haringey recently urged the Yankees to steer clear of a potential trade for Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to fill the hole at third base. Kiner-Falefa spent two years with the Yankees earlier in his career and was notoriously controversial among fans. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JULY 06: Isiah Kiner-Falefa #7 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during the game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on July 06, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JULY 06: Isiah Kiner-Falefa #7 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during the game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on July 06, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The Seattle Mariners won 1-0. More"In sharp contrast to Reynolds, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a Pirate who is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. That sets the versatile infielder up as an intriguing trade targets for teams looking for help ahead of the deadline," Haringey wrote. "In theory, the Yankees might see Kiner-Falefa as someone who can provide them more production at shortstop than Anthony Volpe. "The problem with that idea is that Kiner-Falefa doesn't possess enough upside to justify the prospect capital Pittsburgh will require to land him. The Yankees need to keep their powder dry at shortstop to focus on other positions. Kiner-Falefa's defensive weakness would also undo a lot of the good work Cashman and company have done to upgrade their infield gloves. Adding Kiner-Falefa would be a slight upgrade, and it would come very cheap for the Yankees, but it's not the right move to make. The Yankees aren't going to win the World Series if they try to make a bunch of cheap trades at the deadline. Plus, Kiner-Falefa was disliked by a majority of the fan base when he played in the Bronx. He might hit for a solid average now, but his power numbers and defense struggle. He's not the right fit at the hot corner in the Bronx. More MLB: Braves Expected To Consider Trading $73 Million All-Star: Report

New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers Interested in Trade for Gold Glover
The New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers are all poised to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline, with each World Series contender having similar needs. That has led the three organizations to inquire about a trade for the same infielder. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Tigers, Cubs and Yankees all reached out to the Pittsburgh Pirates to inquire about the availability and acquisition cost for third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes. Related: Hayes, age 28, is regarded as one of the top third basemen available at this year's trade deadline. While he does not have the offensive profile that Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Eugenio Suárez brings, the 2023 Gold Glove Award winner is a superior defender at the hot corner. Ke'Bryan Hayes stats (): .237/.284/.294, .578 OPS, 2 home runs, 33 RBI in 337 at-bats Offensively, Hayes has nearly as many strikeouts (75) as hits (78) so far this season. He currently ranks 29th in OPS (.578) among third basemen with at least 250 plate appearances in 2025. The right-handed hitter has struggled at the plate for the past two seasons, recording a .236/.284/.293 triple-slash line across his last 665 at-bats. Related: Ke'Bryan Hayes contract (): $7 million salary in 2025-27, $8 million salary in 2028-29, $12 million club option in 2030 What makes Hayes especially intriguing for the Yankees, Cubs, and Tigers is his defensive prowess at third base. He leads his position with 13 Defensive Runs Saved, well above the next-closest player, and ranks in the 97th percentile for Fielding Run Value. Interested clubs are likely hopeful they can help Hayes return to the caliber of hitter he was from 2022-23, when he posted a .257/.312/.398 triple-slash line. Even with modest offensive production, his elite defense helped make Hayes a 4.0 bWAR player each season.
