444 people sent to holding centres in Odisha as officials verify citizenship documents
Citing an order by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Smit Parmar said the special task force (STF) has put the suspects in two holding centres in different towns.
'We are verifying their proof of Indian citizenship and other details like how they came to Odisha,' he said.
Police sources said the people are engaged in construction activities, mining and various industrial units.
Officials said that following guidelines issued by the MHA, instructions were issued to all districts to constitute STFs headed by superintendents of police. The STFs would also be assigned a foreigners registration officer (FRO) to identify and deport illegal immigrants.
The district authorities have been asked to detect, identify and deport those who are unable to show proof of citizenship.
The FROs have also been asked to identify holding centres in each district to put the suspects during verification, while the state government has also identified an old jail in Athagarh as a state holding centre.
For the BJP, which came to power in Odisha in 2024, the identification of illegal immigrants is a key focus.
As Odisha has a coastline of over 480 kilometres, officials say illegal immigrants come from the sea route and settle in coastal districts such as Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore.
Last month, during his visit to Kendrapada, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi asked the district administration to take strict legal action against Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally without valid documents. He asked the police to work with central agencies to deal with the issue, calling the move a necessary step towards national security.
According to a reply to a question in the Assembly in March this year, Odisha has 3,740 undocumented migrants from Bangladesh. Officials, however, estimate that the actual figure is much higher.

A forum of 10 central trade unions and their associates has called for a general strike or 'Bharat Bandh' to "oppose the anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government".In a statement, the forum has called for making "the nationwide general strike a grand success", and said preparations have been taken up in earnest by unions in all sectors of formal and informal/unorganised economy."More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country," said Amarjeet Kaur from All India Trade Union Singh Sidhu from Hind Mazdoor Sabha said that banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the forum had last year submitted a charter of 17-point demand to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandavia, the workers' union forum said in its latest further said that the government has not been conducting the annual labour conference for the last 10 years and continues to take decisions in contravention to the interest of labour force, attempting to impose four labour codes to weaken collective bargaining, to cripple unions' activities and to favour employers in the name of 'ease of doing business'.The forum also alleged that the economic policies are resulting into more unemployment, rising prices of essential commodities, depression in wages, cut in social sector spending in education, health, basic civic amenities, and all these are leading to more inequalities and miseries for poor, people of lower income group as well as the middle government has abandoned the welfare state status of the country and is working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporates, and it is so evident from its policies being pursued vigorously, the forum unions have been fighting against "privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, policies of outsourcing, contractorisation and casualisation of workforce", it four labour codes that have been passed by the Parliament are meant to suppress and cripple the trade union movement, increase working hours, snatch workers' right to collective bargaining, right to strike, and decriminalise violation of labour laws by employers, the statement said.
