Rs 96,000 cr invested to strengthen India's aviation sector: Minister
At present, there are 162 operational airports, including heliports and water aerodromes, in the country. During the year 2024-25, Indian airports recorded a total passenger traffic of 412 million, including 77 million international and 335 million domestic passengers, marking a 9 per cent year-on-year growth. During this period, scheduled Indian operators operated on 835 domestic and 251 international routes, the minister said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Naidu also said that in 2016, the Ministry of Civil Aviation launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme-UdeDeshkaAamNagrik (RCS-UDAN), with the objective of enhancing regional air connectivity and making air travel more affordable for the general public and promoting regional development. Since the commencement of the scheme, 637 RCS routes have been operationalised, connecting 92 unserved and underserved airports, including 15 heliports and two water aerodromes.
The scheme ensures affordability as the airfares on the seats on which Viability Gap Funding (VGF) is provided are capped at affordable rates, as determined by the government, the minister explained.
He further stated that modernisation and expansion of infrastructure facilities at existing airports is a continuous process undertaken by the AAI or the concerned airport operators, depending on traffic demand, commercial viability, land availability, operational requirements for aircraft safety, and demand from airlines.
The government has also formulated a Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy, 2008 for development of new Greenfield airports in the country. As per the policy, if any airport developer, including the state government, desires to develop an airport, they are required to identify a suitable site and get the prefeasibility study conducted for construction of airport and submit a proposal to the Central government, he explained.
He also clarified that the Centre has not received any proposal seeking approval under the Greenfield Airports Policy, 2008, for the construction of a Greenfield airport at Palghar in Maharashtra or at Pachmarhi or Matkuli in Madhya Pradesh, either from the concerned state government or any airport developer.

New ground handling firm to be hired at Chennai airport as replacement for Turkish firm Celebi
Airports Authority of India (AAI) will bring on board a new ground handling firm in about three months at Chennai airport after the departure of the Turkish ground handling service provider Çelebi Airport Services Private Limited recently. Chennai airport currently has two firms—AI Airport Services Limited and Bird Airport Services—which airlines have been deploying for their numerous in ground handling needs like moving passenger baggage between terminal and aircraft, aircraft servicing and cleaning, support services in flight operations and maintenance among others. The company had bagged contracts for several airports like Chennai, Goa, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Kannur a few years back. In the city airport, the company managed a fairly significant volume of ground handling and the airlines including US Bangla, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Scoot and SpiceJet had opted for the services of Çelebi until the license was cancelled by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Revoking this company's license came when security concerns emerged following military strikes and tensions between India and Pakistan. In May, when the BCAS withdrew the license to this Turkish-based firm, AAI said, airlines using their services quickly chose to go with the two other firms without causing any inconvenience for passengers. Officials of AAI said, after the ban of Çelebi, they have now issued a Request for Proposal for ground handling services at Chennai airport. 'It is a mandatory requirement from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that major airports must have three firms for ground handling support. This way, duopoly is avoided and in case of any crisis like what happened in May, there are always two firms available at an airport and the operations are not disturbed. If only one firm is available, then the firm may scramble for manpower and as a result, baggage delivery may be delayed, and passengers will be affected. Hence, it is ideal to have three firms,' an official said.

Indian eyewear retailer Lenskart secured shareholder approval to raise $250 million through a fresh share issue, setting the stage for a public offering that could reach $1 billion, including existing investor sales, according to sources. It is aiming for an IPO valuation of about $10 billion. 'The company got approval for the $250 million IPO fundraise. The offer for sale (OFS) would be decided later,' said a person familiar with the matter. The company plans to file its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) soon, joining a wave of technology startups—including trading platform Groww, e-commerce firm Meesho, and education company PhysicsWallah—that are preparing to go public in 2025. Lenskart's move comes as the $5 billion company—recently marked up to $6.1 billion by Fidelity—seeks to capitalize on robust growth in India's retail market. The Gurugram-based firm reported 43 per cent revenue growth to Rs 5,427.7 crore in FY24 from Rs 3,788 crore in FY23, while narrowing its losses by 84 per cent to Rs 10 crore in FY24 from Rs 63 crore in FY23. The IPO approval includes a pre-listing fundraising round of $51 million and a new employee stock plan covering 7.2 million shares. Lenskart operates more than 2,500 stores globally and is investing $200 million in a manufacturing facility in southern India. Lenskart continues to deepen its penetration in India while rapidly scaling its international presence, including in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. With a unique click-and-mortar business model, it is disrupting the eyewear industry by offering an omni-channel customer experience across online platforms, mobile applications, and stores. Globally and in India, Gurugram-based Lenskart competes with players such as Titan Eyeplus, Specsmakers, Vision Express, Warby Parker, and Italian eyewear conglomerate Luxottica Group.

The accused, Harsh Vardhan Jain , was taken into custody on Tuesday following a raid by the Noida unit of the to officials, preliminary investigation revealed that Jain falsely claimed to be a consul or ambassador representing fictional micronations like West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia. He allegedly used his fake identity to broker job placements abroad for companies and STF said Jain had created fake documents and morphed photographs showing him with top Indian dignitaries such as the prime minister and the president to make his claims appear Jain's arrest, the STF seized four vehicles with fake diplomatic number plates, 12 forged diplomatic passports, two fake PAN cards, 34 rubber stamps of different countries and companies, and two fake press agency also recovered Rs 44.7 lakh in cash, foreign currency, documents linked to several companies, and 18 more fake diplomatic number plates.
