Boston Celtics rookie Hugo Gonzalez was not nervous in his Las Vegas Summer League debut

USA Todaya day ago
New Boston Celtics forward Hugo Gonzalez was not at all nervous in his Las Vegas Summer League debut for the Sin City Celtics. Playing like a seasoned vet (though perhaps a bit bothered by the speed of the game in his new league), the Madrid, Spain native put up 12 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks in his first game ever as a member of Boston's roster.
The No. 28 overall pick for the Celtics in the 2025 draft did a lot to silence concerned fans worried he might not be able to hang at this level given his limited run with Real Madrid last season with his play. Postgame, Gonzalez took some time to talk to the assembled media about his debut with the team, and how his EuroLeague play prepared him for the NBA.
The folks behind the "CLNS Media Boston Sports Network" YouTube channel put together a clip of his postgame chat for us to watch later. Check it out below!

UFC Cuts Ties With Ranked Veteran And Fans Are Baffled

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JULY 06: UFC president Dana White is seen on stage during the UFC 290 press ... More conference at T-Mobile Arena on July 06, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) The UFC dropped six fighters from the roster on July 10 and one of them was 38-year-old Brazilian veteran, and No-10-ranked women's flyweight, Viviane Araujo. While some of the other fighters who were cut weren't surprising, fans expressed disbelief when news of Araujo's separation from the company spread. UFC Roster Watch and UFC Roster Tracker reported the information on X, and fans commented on both posts with similar sentiments. Here's some of the comments from fans. 'That's a weird one, yea she's old but still decent. Just fraud checked Karine so.' 'Wow.' 'I get she's 38 and all, but she isn't even on a losing streak or anything like that. Weird to cut her like that.' 'They really burn you for having a s### performance, Tracy [Cortez] didn't look any better also I think they just cutting anyone who doesn't have any chance of being a champion one day.' Araujo's career record is 13-7. She lost her last fight via unanimous decision against Cortez at UFC 317 on June 28. Prior to that lost, Araujo pulled out an upset win over Karine Silva, despite coming in as a plus-240 underdog. Araujo established herself as a tough out in the women's flyweight division going the distance with Natalia Silva, Amanda Ribas, Alexa Grasso and Katlyn Cerminara, but falling short in each fight. Over her six-year UFC career, Araujo's biggest wins came over Alexis Davis, Roxanne Modaferri, Andrea Lee, Jennifer Maia and Silva. The one commenter is likely on to something as it pertains to Araujo's age and the unlikelihood of her challenging for a title. The UFC likely doesn't see her as a legit title contender and because she's close to 40–and not one for finishes–the powers that be likely found her expendable. Still, that doesn't make it sit right with everyone. Araujo's release feels more like a quiet rebalancing of the books than a cut based on merit. She wasn't streaking toward gold, sure—but she also wasn't getting blown out. Her recent loss to Cortez was one of those low-output, tactical chess matches, and it's not like Cortez ran away with it. And before that? Araujo flipped the script against Silva in a fight most expected her to lose. When a veteran wins as an underdog and gets released a month later, you have to ask: do gatekeepers have any security even when they win? This wasn't a fighter on a four-fight skid or someone getting stopped every time out. In fact, she's never been stopped in her UFC career. But the UFC has been blunt about what they value lately: marketability, momentum and ceiling. Araujo doesn't check those boxes at this stage, even if she remains a capable, game opponent. So she's gone. In the end, it feels like another reminder that in today's UFC, being solid just isn't good enough. You have to be ascending—or exciting enough to offset the plateau. Derrick Lewis who just defeated a talented up-and-comer in the UFC Nashville main event is proof. Araujo doesn't finish opponents or entertain like Lewis, so a ranked fighter who can actually push young fighters is off the roster. It's a cold MMA world out there.

Tony Allen says the Boston Celtics would have beat the Lakers in '10 if Perk was healthy

Tony Allen still thinks that the Boston Celtics would have beaten the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2010 NBA Finals if former Boston big man Kendrick Perkins was healthy. Speaking on an episode of fellow Boston alum Jeff Teague's "Club 520" podcast, the Grindfather took some time to look back on that fateful series between the league's two oldest and greatest rivals in their battle for historic supremacy. The Ubuntu era Celtics' last, best shot at an NBA title and dynasty was ultimately foiled by Perk's bad knee and a Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol-led Lakers squad Allen had a front row seat for. Boston would of course have a few more deep postseason runs, but this was as close as they came to hanging a second banner with that core -- and Allen thinks they just missed doing so. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he and Teague had to say about that snapshot in Celtics history for yourself.

Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warrios Las Vegas Summer League recap and final score

In a game that disappointed Utah Jazz fans with the lack of Ace Bailey playing, there was a nice showing from Cody Williams and Kyle Filipowski in the Jazz's 103-93 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Kyle Filipowski playing well is not a big surprise with him having an impressive summer league so far. In this one, Filipowski had 21 points and 6 rebounds. He continues to put up numbers and is likely worthy of being sent home. The Jazz may need him for the simple fact that they need bigs on the floor. Filipowski has not defended the rim well in this summer league but he showing some nice signs on the perimeter defensivly. There may be a world where he solidifies his position at the power forward, and it becomes a staple to his game. Advertisement I'm trying not to overreact, but Cody Williams is getting better. In the second half in this one, Cody Williams really found his groove and looked comfortable driving to the basket and scoring. Williams is showing signs that he's not a player to give up on ... at all. Williams had 22 points on 8/17 shooting from the field. He only shot 1/6 from three, which makes that 2PT FG% really high. He also threw 4 assists and grabbed 3 steals. He's looking like a player who's getting more and more comfortable and confident. It's just summer league, but this is exactly what you want to see from Williams. Probably the most surprising thing is how good he looks handing the ball. Williams is driving to the basket and not turning the ball over at a high rate. The biggest thing for him right now is just shooting the three. His shot is not quite there yet and will take time, but that's something the Jazz have and can allow him a chance to develop. It's a game day tomorrow, and we'll see if Ace Bailey plays. If not, we get a chance to see if Cody Williams can keep up this level of play. More from
