7 Crash Victims Still Hospitalised After Jeli-Gerik Tragedy
Acting Gerik police chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said four of them are UPSI students, with two of them at Taiping Hospital and the other two at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here.
'The other three victims, comprising a woman and two children, are the passengers in the Alza car also involved in the crash. The three of them are receiving treatment at Baling Hospital, Kedah,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Last Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway. Thirteen students died at the scene, while two others were pronounced dead in the hospital.
The crash left 33 others injured, and they were sent to several hospitals in Perak and Kedah for treatment.

Other major improvements include resurfacing of the road and repairs to damaged guardrails following the June 9 incident, according to the Malay daily. A 60km survey from Gerik town in Perak to the crash site in Banun, near Tasik Banding, revealed ongoing infrastructure works, particularly the installation of solar lights at sharp bends and narrow sections of the highway. A Gerik resident, who wished to be known only as Sue, 39, told Utusan Malaysia she welcomed the upgrades as a preventive step to avoid similar tragedies. 'This gives drivers more confidence at night. JRTB hasn't seen improvements like this in a long time and was quite neglected. It's encouraging for those of us who frequently travel to Jeli,' she reportedly said. Built during the communist insurgency in the 1970s, the Gerik-Jeli stretch cuts through dense forest, home to wild elephants and the Malayan tiger. Another resident, Mohd Fadzil Abdul Aziz, 48, praised the government and the Public Works Ministry for responding swiftly, telling Utusan Malaysia that the upgrades have made a noticeable difference. 'Now the JRTB is well lit and much easier for road users. There's even a viral video showing elephants visible under the solar lights,' he said.

Year Six girl dies after being thrown onto windshield in crash with teen driver in Kuala Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — A 12-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries nearly 24 hours after she was hit by a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) driven by a 17-year-old in Kampung Bukit Kuching, Kuala Selangor. According to Harian Metro, Kuala Selangor district police chief Superintendent Azaharudin Tajudin said police received a report at 3.30pm yesterday after the Year Six pupil was pronounced dead at Tanjong Karang Hospital. 'Initial investigations found the crash occurred at 6.45pm the previous day. The victim had been riding a Yamaha Ego Solaris motorcycle from Kampung Bukit Kuching to Kampung Sungai Buloh, Jeram. 'The Perodua Alza, driven by a male Form Five student, was heading from Jalan Rizab Haji Omar to Jalan Rizab Zazuli. 'Upon reaching the four-way junction, the victim is believed to have suddenly entered the intersection, leaving the driver no time to avoid the collision,' he was quoted as saying. Azaharudin added that the impact threw the girl onto the windscreen of the Alza before she landed on the road shoulder. 'She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Tanjong Karang Hospital, but was later confirmed dead. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,' he said. He also confirmed that the Perodua Alza belonged to the teen's mother. 'The matter of whether the MPV was driven without the family's knowledge is still under investigation,' he added.

Solar street light project on East-West Highway to be completed by September
IPOH: A total of 385 solar-powered street lights, valued at RM3.32 million, are currently being installed along the East-West Highway (JRTB), which connects Gerik to Jeli, Kelantan. The project is expected to be completed by September this year. Perak Public Works Department director Ir Zamri Abu Kasim said nine contractors were appointed for the installation works, which began on June 23. "The installations cover the following sections: Section 83.74 to 98.54 (42 units); Section 98.54 to 113 (42 units); Section 113 to 127 (58 units); Section 127 to 141.50 (58 units); Section 141.50 to 147 (42 units); Section 147 to 151 (33 units); Section 151 to 174.80 (55 units); and Section 174.80 to 198.60 (55 units)," he said today. Zamri added that as of July 23, the work progress stood between 25 and 50 per cent. "Among the ongoing tasks are site plotting and concrete foundation placement before the solar lamps are installed," he said. In addition to installing the solar lamps, contractors are also carrying out maintenance work on a faulty traffic light at Section 120.40. "The contractor is awaiting delivery of materials from the supplier before beginning on-site work. Re-measurement and site inspection are also being conducted," he said. On June 10, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government allocated RM60 million in 2023 to implement various initiatives to enhance the Gerik–Jeli route, particularly along the FT04 federal road. He added that in August of the same year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM30 million allocation to further upgrade the route, including repairs to road furniture, bridges, street lights, and traffic lights. He said this in response to concerns raised over the condition of the FT04 route, where a fatal accident claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on June 9.
