KOTA BARU: A member of the Kuala Krai district council pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here Sunday (June 15) to a charge of raping a 29-year-old woman who was also his employee.
Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, claimed trial after the charge was read to him before Sessions judge Zulkifli Abdullah.
According to the charge, the alleged offence took place at a laundromat on Jalan KCP 2, Krai Central Park, at 2pm on May 29.
He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years and caning, if convicted.
Lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein, representing the accused, applied for bail on the grounds that his client has no criminal record, is a community leader, and is active in business and social initiatives.
"The accused has 12 children, including two stepchildren, and is supporting 10 who are still in school.
"The proposed surety is his brother, who works as a plantation manager. Our client is also willing to report regularly to the police station,' the lawyer said.
However, DPP Kamarul Hasyime Rosli objected to the bail application, citing the seriousness of the charge, and proposed a sum of RM30,000 with additional conditions.
The court then set bail at RM15,000 with two local sureties and imposed additional conditions.
The accused was ordered to surrender his passport to the court and report to police every two months pending disposal of the case, and was strictly prohibited from harassing the alleged victim in any way.
The court also fixed July 15 for mention. – Bernama

Clerk loses over RM126,000 to syndicate posing as police officer, prosecutor

KUANTAN: A clerk has lost RM126,500 to an online fraud syndicate whose members posed as insurance officer, police and public prosecutor, in November last year. Acting Kuantan district police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the 56-year-old man received a phone call from an individual claiming to be an insurance company representative, stating that there was a fake insurance claim using the victim's name. "The call was then connected to another individual posing as a police officer and public prosecutor, who informed the victim that he needed to make a bail payment of RM68,000 to resolve the case," he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 16). He said the panicked victim then made three separate transactions totalling RM126,500 into three different bank accounts using a cash deposit machine. "The victim only realised he had been scammed after failing to contact the relevant party again, so he lodged a police report at 12.15pm on Wednesday. The money used was from the victim's own savings," he said. In this regard, he advised the public not to panic if they received calls from unknown individuals and were encouraged to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 99, should they become a victim of a scam. Meanwhile, Mohd Adli said his party had also introduced a digital platform based on artificial intelligence (AI) GPT SEDARScam to assist in the early prevention of crime in the community. - Bernama

China YouTuber fined RM800 for trespassing Malaysia Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: A part-time YouTuber from China has been fined RM800 for trespassing into the Malaysian Parliament compound. The 25-year-old, Li Zhechen, pleaded guilty to the offence under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959. Magistrate M.S. Arunjothy handed down the sentence, with an alternative of one month's jail if the fine is unpaid. Li was charged under Section 7 of the Act, which allows for a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a RM1,000 fine, or both. The incident occurred on July 9 when Li entered the restricted area to take photos and videos. Police officers on duty detained him shortly after. Deputy public prosecutor Adiba Iman Md Hassan urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence. Li's lawyer, Lee Ewe Kiang, argued for leniency, stating his client was unaware he had entered a restricted zone. 'He was visiting Malaysia as a tourist and mistakenly walked into the Parliament grounds after exploring Perdana Botanical Gardens,' Lee said. Li has since apologised for the incident. - Bernama

Pahang KPDN seizes 17,000 litres of diesel in Ops Tiris

KUANTAN: The Pahang Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has seized 17,000 litres of diesel and a skid tank worth over RM53,000 in an operation targeting illegal diesel storage in Indera Mahkota 8. The raid, conducted under Ops Tiris, also led to the arrest of six foreign workers suspected of transporting the fuel to telecommunications towers. Pahang KPDN chief enforcement officer Mohd Hafiz Ramli stated that the operation followed a month-long intelligence operation. 'Based on the documents submitted, this premise does not have a permit to store diesel at the location, thus raising suspicions of a violation of the law,' he said. Six foreign nationals, including four Bangladeshis and two Myanmar citizens aged between 20 and 29, were detained. Investigations revealed they had been operating in the area for over a year, supplying diesel to 33 telecommunications towers for generator use. Authorities also confiscated two four-wheel drive vehicles loaded with diesel drums, valued at RM140,000, along with related documents. The case is being investigated under Regulation 21(1) of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974 and Section 20(1) of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. - Bernama
