Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Singer and Master Composer of Seminal Albums Like ‘Pet Sounds' and ‘Smile,' Dies at 82
'We are heartbroken to announced that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,' the family wrote on his X account, Instagram and website. 'We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.'
A cause of death was not immediately given.
Wilson's imaginative use of the recording studio shifted the paradigm of pop music, as his novel use of effects, string sections, complex harmonies and expansive themes justified the word by which he was universally described: genius. All of it was predicated on Wilson's wizard-level songwriting, which propelled the Beach Boys to worldwide superstardom and cemented their surf- and car-themed songs into enduring history.
But beyond sweet high harmonies and summer anthems, Wilson was a pop-culture figure whose influence spanned decades. He credited his well-documented struggles with mental illness as a creative ally, describing how he could hear songs develop in his head as clearly as one might hear them come through the speakers.

Wilson launched the Beach Boys in 1961 – as the band's songwriter, co-lead vocalist, bassist, keyboardist and producer – and within a few years had written more than two dozen Top 40 hits including 'Surf City,' 'I Get Around,' 'Help Me Rhonda' and 'Good Vibrations.' He suffered a nervous breakdown in 1964 and was forced to drop out of regular concert touring – a turn of events that would give birth to some of the most influential recorded music in history.
Turning his full attention to songwriting and studio production, Wilson produced 'Pet Sounds,' among the most celebrated albums in any genre of music history. Desiring to transcend the surf- and car-themed songs that made The Beach Boys famous, Wilson sought to create a cohesive complete work, packing his 1966 vision with unforgettable hits 'Wouldn't it be nice,' 'God Only Knows,' 'Sloop John B' and 'Caroline, No.'
The 'concept album' was born, giving inspiration to the Beatles to create 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and dozens of similar efforts in the decades to come.
More to come …

'That's not how we were. We would never do that': Ringo has put his foot down over parts of the Beatles biopics
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Ringo Starr has apparently already had a word with Sam Mendes and caused some rewriting to the upcoming Beatles' biopics. The director met his subject recently and over two days the pair worked on the scripts for the drummer's individual movie, which like the others, is due to hit cinemas in April 2028. According to the New York Times, Ringo 'offered extensive notes' to Mendes to make sure that the movie provides an accurate portrayal of his early life and his first marriage to Maureen Starkey. 'He had a writer - very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,' says Starr. 'That's not how we were. I'd say, 'We would never do that.'' Nevertheless, both Ringo and Mendes are now said to be satisfied with the rewrite. 'He'll do what he's doing,' Starr said of the director, 'and I'll send him peace and love.' Elsewhere in the New York Times interview, the drummer, who turns 85 this coming Monday, says he still feels like he's in his 20s when he looks in the mirror. "It blows me away,' he reflects. 'I look in the mirror and I'm 24. I never got older than 24," he told the NYT, adding to himself, "But guess what? You did." There's no doubt Ringo does look good for a man in his mid 80s, but 24? Come on. Anyway, he puts it all down to a lifetime playing drums: "I love what I'm doing. When I first started... my mother would come to the gigs. She would always say, 'You know, son, I always feel you're at your happiest when you're playing your drums'. So she noticed. And I do."

Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson
Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson originally appeared on Parade. A legendary British rocker is going viral with his new, stripped-down recording of God Only Knows as a tribute to the late, great . Howard Jones, 70, the British singer/songwriter with a very distinct voice, was, like many, many other artists, quick to express their admiration, love and grief over Wilson's passing on June 12. "I loved the music of Brian Wilson and was so happy to meet him backstage at a gig in Brooklyn. I was able to say to him what a profound influence he was on my musical life. Thank you, Brian, you will always be in my heart," wrote Jones on Facebook. He then posted a video of himself at the piano playing a gorgeous, stripped-down version of "God Only Knows" in memory of Wilson, captioning the video, "Perhaps the best pop song ever written." In the comments on the Facebook video, one fan wrote, "Howard Jones, your cover of 'God Only Knows' is a beautiful tribute to Brian Wilson."Another fan wrote, "A really exquisite tribute. He'd love it, and clearly you're really connected to the emotion of this song." "Just 20 seconds in and feeling the vibe, and that moment the hair stands up on the back of your neck… pure class….👏👏👏," wrote a third fan. Jones is the voice behind such hits as "New Song," "What is Love?", Pearl in the Shell," "Like to Get to Know You Well," and "Things Can Only Get Better," but perhaps his greatest hit was the 1986 single "No One is to Blame," which peaked at No. 4 in the U.S. — personally, we find it to be his most beautiful song lyrically and melodically. Wilson was a founding member of the Beach Boys and was responsible for writing some of their greatest hits like "Good Vibrations," "God Only Knows," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," among hundreds of other songs. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson first appeared on Parade on Jun 15, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
