Real reason Princess Anne ‘criticised' by United States media for not being ‘fairytale' princess
While she might be considered one of the most popular members of the Royal Family now, Princess Ann e was once subject to vicious barbs from the US media. The Princess Royal made her first official visit to the US in 1970 when she joined her older brother in Washington.
Anne and the-then Prince Charles spent two days touring around the capital and meeting President Richard Nixon. Anne however was 'not very well received' by the American media at the time.
She was branded 'sulky' and during one sharp exchange with a journalist replied with 'I don't do interviews' when asked what she thought about the Washington Monument. Reports at the time suggested Anne could have been 'tired', having previously spent 10 days touring Canada.
On Channel 5's Princess Anne: A Quite Remarkable Royal, journalist Victoria Murphy explains that the US press were quick to highlight that Anne should have 'smiled more'. She said: 'One of the first trips that she did officially was to go with Prince Charles to the US in 1970.
'This trip was actually quite challenging because she got some negative press as a result of this trip from the US media. They were quite quick to pick up on the fact that she wasn't smiling very often. They thought that she didn't look like she was enjoying herself as much as they thought she might.'
Royal commentator Wesley Kerr however believes it was Anne's natural expression that led Americans to believe she wasn't looking happy. He said: 'Her resting expression isn't smiling and happiness so I think there was some criticism from the US press that she wasn't a fairytale princess, that she was perhaps a bit surly.'
In 2021, commentator Penny Junor told Express.co.uk that many journalists in the States felt as though Anne looked 'sulky' during her US tour. It led Anne to being nicknamed 'Princess Sourpuss' by Americans.
Junor said: 'She went to the White House to visit Nixon when he was President and there was a lot of negative press because she seemed to be so sulky.
'She looked at the time as though she didn't want to be there, they said. She refused to answer anyone's questions, snappily saying 'I don't give interviews'.
Anne and Charles arrived in Washington on July 18, 1970 as part of a semi-official visit. They were hosted by President Nixon's two daughters, Julie and Tricia Nixon and the President's son-in-law, David Eisenhower.
At the time of the visit 19-year-old Anne had only recently taken on royal responsibilities. The stay saw the royals visiting the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon and the Smithsonian Institution's Space Museum.
They attended a barbecue at Camp David and a Washington Senators baseball game. On the final evening, the Nixons hosted a dinner and a party at the White House, which was attended by over 700 guests.

Fans became concerned for the Beckhams after they noticed Brooklyn and his wife snubbed David during his 50th birthday celebrations in May. In subsequent months, there have been reports that Brooklyn and Nicola have clashed with his younger brothers - while other reports have suggested the family have been at odds since Nicola and her husband got married in 2022. There have also been shady comments and social media quips that have left fans reading into the smallest details for evidence of a feud. On Saturday, social media posts featuring Romeo and his younger sister Harper hinted they were glad to be in the sun and away from feud-fuelled headlines. Glasgow already boasts several great spots for sipping cocktails while watching the sun set over the skyline, including the Red Sky Bar in Finnieston, House of Gods in Merchant City and Kong in the city centre - just to mention a few. And last night, I went along to the newest addition to the scene, SíSí. My friend and I were invited to have a look around ahead of the official opening on August 1. Upon arrival, we were shown to our table next to a huge window, already providing a unique angle of Glasgow below us. But the real star of the evening was the rooftop, complete with tables and comfortable chairs. The spacious area was beautifully lit up as the sun set behind us - great timing on our part. Below, we could see the People's Palace, Glasgow Green, all along Argyle Street and Central Station form a truly unique point of view. To drink, we tried four cocktails between us: the Cherry Paloma, the Airmail, the Trouble in Paradise and Coco Maiz. They were all great, but if I had to highlight one of them, the Cherry Paloma was the perfect amount of fruity and smoky. If I could do it all over again, I would order that and not let my friend pick it first, leaving me with only a couple of sips of goodness. We even had space for dessert, mezcal cranachan for me and churros for my dining partner. Overall, I enjoyed our time very much at SíSí, I only wish the weather had been a bit warmer and drier for the occasion. During the next heatwave, you will know where to find me.

Beaming King Charles waves as he attends Sunday church service in Norfolk
Charles smiled and waved as he arrived for Sunday service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk today - without the Queen by his side. The monarch, 76, appeared to be in high spirits as he arrived dressed in a smart grey suit and brown loafers, carrying his own umbrella. The venue is known for being a regular place of worship for members of the royal family, particularly during Christmas time. It is not known why Camilla, 77, wasn't present for today's service. Meanwhile, earlier this week however, the King's wife attended the annual King George Racing Weekend in Ascot, dressed in an elegant in an off-white ensemble. She was also seen recently attending the annual Sandringham Flower Show alongside Charles. The royal couple arrived at the flower show on their estate in a carriage that once belonged to Queen Victoria. They were all smiles as they rode the route lined with members of the public and waved to them as they passed by. Looking well and relaxed in a smart suit alongside his wife, elegant in a black and white flower print dress, Charles looked delighted to be there again after being forced to miss last year's event due to his cancer treatment. The monarch attended the service without Queen Camilla, who was seen yesterday attending the annual King George Racing Weekend in Ascot without the King Many in the crowds commented on how delighted they were to see him back. The King asked one young winner about what she had won her cup for, telling her: 'I must say it's very impressive. And at least you've now had some rain.' During the event, Charles and Camilla also met with a number of guests and members of local gardening and horticultural cubs. They shook hands with members of the public who queued to greet them, and even bent down to pet a friendly black dog that belonged to one of their greeters. Camilla was left in stitches after a fan showed her a tattoo he recently had done of her royal cypher on his leg, and revealed that one of her police officers also has the same tattoo. Wearing a black shirt, large cross, denim shorts and sliders, Mr Smith said after their meeting: 'I just think she's fabulous and have got to know her a bit. We just hit it off. 'I love the royal family and she in particular has got a good sense of humour. She frequently responds. 'I waited to see her to show her my latest [tattoo] and she laughed. She said one of her security men has also had it done too.' He said he thought it was of their joint royal cypher and the police officer was there with her that day. He added: 'Honestly, she's just great. We exchange letters. She knew who I was. She asked how long it [the latest one] took and I told her about two and a half hours. 'But I told her this one bloody hurt. She just finds it hilarious. 'She pulled her police officer's sleeve and said 'look, it's catching on!' This week marks the last of the royal couple's official engagements before they head to Scotland for their summer break, as per their traditional royal holiday schedule. King Charles is expected to vacation at Balmoral Castle, which was his late mother Queen Elizabeth II's favourite royal residence and where she died in 2022. After a busy summer, the royal couple will be looking forward to a well-deserved rest before their next engagement in September and may prove to be a controversial one. This is because they will be playing host to US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The president will be paying an official state visit to the UK from September 17 to 19, and will be staying at Windsor Castle. It will come around just over a month of Mr Trump ends his four-day private visit to Scotland, where he is currently staying at his Turnberry resort in South Ayshire. His presence in Scotland, a country he is fond of and owns several golf courses in, has been met by protests carried out by local residents and environmentalists.
