Real reason Princess Anne ‘criticised' by United States media for not being ‘fairytale' princess

Princess Anne was 'not received well' when she visited the United States for the first time in 1970, being accused of looking 'sulky' and even nicknamed 'Princess Sourpuss' While she might be considered one of the most popular members of the Royal Family now, Princess Ann e was once subject to vicious barbs from the US media. The Princess Royal made her first official visit to the US in 1970 when she joined her older brother in Washington. ‌ Anne and the-then Prince Charles spent two days touring around the capital and meeting President Richard Nixon. Anne however was 'not very well received' by the American media at the time. ‌ She was branded 'sulky' and during one sharp exchange with a journalist replied with 'I don't do interviews' when asked what she thought about the Washington Monument. Reports at the time suggested Anne could have been 'tired', having previously spent 10 days touring Canada. ‌ On Channel 5's Princess Anne: A Quite Remarkable Royal, journalist Victoria Murphy explains that the US press were quick to highlight that Anne should have 'smiled more'. She said: 'One of the first trips that she did officially was to go with Prince Charles to the US in 1970. 'This trip was actually quite challenging because she got some negative press as a result of this trip from the US media. They were quite quick to pick up on the fact that she wasn't smiling very often. They thought that she didn't look like she was enjoying herself as much as they thought she might.' ‌ Royal commentator Wesley Kerr however believes it was Anne's natural expression that led Americans to believe she wasn't looking happy. He said: 'Her resting expression isn't smiling and happiness so I think there was some criticism from the US press that she wasn't a fairytale princess, that she was perhaps a bit surly.' In 2021, commentator Penny Junor told that many journalists in the States felt as though Anne looked 'sulky' during her US tour. It led Anne to being nicknamed 'Princess Sourpuss' by Americans. Junor said: 'She went to the White House to visit Nixon when he was President and there was a lot of negative press because she seemed to be so sulky. ‌ 'She looked at the time as though she didn't want to be there, they said. She refused to answer anyone's questions, snappily saying 'I don't give interviews'. Anne and Charles arrived in Washington on July 18, 1970 as part of a semi-official visit. They were hosted by President Nixon's two daughters, Julie and Tricia Nixon and the President's son-in-law, David Eisenhower. At the time of the visit 19-year-old Anne had only recently taken on royal responsibilities. The stay saw the royals visiting the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon and the Smithsonian Institution's Space Museum. They attended a barbecue at Camp David and a Washington Senators baseball game. On the final evening, the Nixons hosted a dinner and a party at the White House, which was attended by over 700 guests.

It's D.C.'s 235th birthday. How much do you know about the city?

Are you a tourist, transplant or true local? Test your knowledge. Happy birthday, D.C.! Netflix Pulls the Plug on Fan-Favorite Show After 10 Seasons

Netflix is ready to give the Fab Five one last makeover mission. It's the 10th season for Queer Eye, but it will also be its last one for the hit streaming show. Netflix announced the news via Instagram on July 9 that the beloved series will be ending after they wrap filming. The post showed the five cast members in Washington, D.C., in front of the Lincoln Memorial looking out to the Washington Monument. The caption read, "10 seasons. Fab Five. One last go 'round. The final season of QUEER EYE is officially in production!" When the reimagined show debuted in 2018, the Fab Five included food influencer Antoni Porowski, designer Bobby Berk, hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness, lifestyle expert Karamo Brown and fashion stylist Tan France. Berk left after Season 8 and was replaced by interior designer Jeremiah Brent. 'It's with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on Queer Eye. It's not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one,' Berk announced on Instagram on Nov. 13, 2023. 'Although my journey with Queer Eye is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon.' A March 2024 Rolling Stone exposé revealed that the Fab Five had a rough time together behind the scenes. A production crew member shared that Queer Eye was essentially "a manufactured boy band with big personalities that certain ones were favored, and certain ones were not, and then eventually [things] turned really toxic.' Berk pivoted to acting and producing in the upcoming series, Strikers, a six-episode cricket-themed comedy that's currently in production. Berk downplayed the off-screen drama and alleged feud with France to Vanity Fair in January 2024. "There were definitely emotions. But each one of us had our reasons why we did what we did," he explained. "I can't be mad – for a second I was. All the plans that I had made when I thought we weren't coming back, I just wasn't willing to change those... We had mentally just prepared ourselves to move on – that's why I left." Queer Eye is a reboot of the original Bravo TV series, Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, which aired from 2003 to 2007, starring Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley and Jai Pulls the Plug on Fan-Favorite Show After 10 Seasons first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 9, 2025

Beloved Netflix show ending after 10 seasons as shooting begins on final episodes

The hit Netflix reality show Queer Eye is coming to an end after its upcoming 10th season, the streaming service has announced. A reboot of the 2000s cult classic Bravo series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the new version with the shorter title bowed in 2018. In contrast to the irreverent and acerbic tone of the original series, the revamped Netflix version was noted for its sugary, feel-good content. Each episode was about the main cast of gay professionals - the 'Fab Five' - helping guest-stars improve their lives in various ways, including fashion, grooming and food. In a post shared this Wednesday, Netflix revealed on X, formerly Twitter, that the show will end after its next season, which has now begun filming. The tweet featured a photo of the current 'Fab Five,' comprised of Jonathan van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown and Jeremiah Brent. Jeremiah joined the series in season nine as the interior design expert, replacing Bobby Berk, who occupied the position for the first eight seasons. The rest of the five have been on the show throughout its Netflix run, each with his own area of expertise - grooming for Jonathan, food and wine for Antoni, culture and lifestyle for Karamo and fashion for Tan. Each season is centered on a particular American city, with past examples including Atlanta, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Austin, Kansas City and Philadelphia. In the tweet announcing the final season, the cast were pictured in front of the Lincoln Memorial, indicating the setting will be Washington, DC. As news spread that the show was coming to an end, Tan France fired up his Instagram page to share his feelings on the development. 'First day of the FINAL season of Queer Eye,' wrote the UK-born reality star Instagram, alongside the promotional picture of the cast in the US capital. 'It's been a long, beautiful journey we've been on, and I truly appreciate all of the love and support for this our little show, that changed my life in ways I never thought possible,' added the fashion plate. 'As we begin our farewell season here on D.C I simply want to say thank you! Thank you!!!!!' he concluded to his 3.7 million-strong following. Jeremiah shared the Netflix announcement to his own Insta Stories, conveying the news to his own more than one million followers. Jonathan posted the group shot of the Fab Five at the Lincoln Memorial, plus a solo of himself by the Washington Monument, writing: 'Season 10, the final season.' Meanwhile Antoni had dropped a hint about their filming location the previous day, posting an Insta Stories photo of the Washington Monument. Bobby announced departure exit from the show in November 2023, explaining that he had decided not to renew his contract because he had made other commitments. Rumors swirled that he had feuded with Tan, to the point Bobby gave an interview to 'extinguish some of the speculation' around the issue. 'I want people to know that Tan and I - we will be fine,' he insisted in a Vanity Fair interview that ran in January 2024, two months after he went public with his exit. He revealed that when his contract - and those of his castmates - expired after eight seasons, he believed the show was coming to an end altogether. As they wrapped filming season eight in 2022, 'the Fab Five and the crew, we all stood there, and we took pictures and cried,' he said. 'We thought we were done. Mentally and emotionally, I thought we all moved on. I know I did, and I started planning other things.' He claimed other Queer Eyes stars were also weighing other career options at that time, saying: 'We'd just assumed that the show wouldn't come back if we all didn't come back. I was like, I'm not going to be having FOMO 'cause the show is not going to happen. I had become at peace with it.' However the rest of the Fab Five ultimately decided to stay - thanks to conversations about which Bobby did not provide details - and 'with only one of us not coming back, Netflix felt [it] could recast one person,' he stated. He stuck to his own decision to leave, explaining: 'All the plans that I had made when I thought we weren't coming back, I just wasn't willing to change those. I would have had to pump the brakes on multiple other projects that are already in process. We had mentally just prepared ourselves to move on - that's why I left.' As for the alleged feud, Bobby confessed that he 'had a moment' with Tan, causing him to temporarily unfollow the fashion expert on Instagram. 'There was a situation, and that's between Tan and I, and it has nothing to do with the show. It was something personal that had been brewing - and nothing romantic, just to clarify that,' the former reality star explained. 'Should I have unfollowed Tan? No. Maybe I should have just muted him. But that day, I was angry, and that's the end of it. We became like siblings - and siblings are always going to fight,' Bobby insisted. When they attended the Emmys, Bobby and Tan 'both embraced each other, and we both said congratulations' and the former said he was able to 'foresee in six months or a year, Tan and I at each other's house being good.' Two months after Bobby's interview went public, Tan found himself staunchly denying allegations that he and Antoni had 'conspired' to have Bobby replaced with Jeremiah - claims leveled in an explosive Rolling Stone article.
