Blake Wheeler, the longtime face of the Winnipeg Jets franchise, officially announced his retirement from professional hockey after 16 NHL seasons. Speaking on Wednesday's edition of
Jets at Noon
, the 38-year-old forward shared that he had already made peace with the decision following a serious injury during the 2023–24 season.
Wheeler leaves the game with over 1,100 games played and nearly 1,000 career points.
Blake Wheeler retires after injury-plagued final season
Wheeler revealed that he knew he was
'all done'
not long after the 2023–24 campaign ended. A devastating injury in February 2024, where he tore ankle ligaments and broke his fibula, sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season. Though he managed to return for one playoff game with the New York Rangers, Wheeler admitted he no longer had the physical or mental fuel to continue.
'I just didn't have anything left in the tank for it,'
Wheeler said.
'I was at peace with it almost immediately.'
The injury was a turning point, especially for someone who had remained relatively healthy throughout most of his career.
Career highlights — a captain, an all-star, a Jets legend
Drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2004, Wheeler debuted in the NHL with the Boston Bruins before joining the Atlanta Thrashers, who later relocated to become the Winnipeg Jets. His prime came in Winnipeg, where he served as captain from 2016 to 2022 and led the team in multiple statistical categories.

Wheeler appeared in 1,172 NHL games, tallying 321 goals and 943 points. He posted back-to-back 91-point seasons in 2017–18 and 2018–19 and was selected to the NHL All-Star Game during those years. Wheeler remains the Jets' all-time leader in both assists (550) and points (897).
Transitioning from hockey to family life
Though the final years of his playing days came with uncertainty, including being stripped of the captaincy by former Jets coach Rick Bowness, Wheeler now looks forward to a slower, more grounded chapter.
'I'm just enjoying being a dad… and being around my family,'
he said.
Blake Wheeler leaves the NHL as a respected leader, top-tier playmaker, and cornerstone of the modern-day Jets. Though injuries marked the end of his career, his legacy remains intact, both on the scoresheet and in Winnipeg's hockey history.

IND vs ENG 4th Test Pitch Report: What to expect from Old Trafford? 'Very, very flat'

Manchester: The Old Trafford Cricket Ground ahead of the fourth test cricket match between India and England, in Manchester. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar) (PTI07_22_2025_000153A) It has been raining in Manchester for the past few days. The pitch at Old Trafford has reportedly been mostly under covers and is expected to help the fast bowlers. Team India captain Shubman Gill on Tuesday said the Old Trafford pitch might have more bounce than the previous three venues. However, former England coach David Lloyd and captain Michael Vaughan disagreed. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! In the podcast Stick To Cricket, Ravi Shastri said, 'This pitch will have more bounce than others from what one's heard. If the weather is not that hot…' He was quickly corrected by Lloyd, 'Very, very flat. No pace, no grass.' Michael Vaughan also chipped in and said: 'The pace has gone since Old Trafford… (changed the axis).' Lloyd suggested that the spinners will get more from this pitch. Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir's late meeting near Manchester pitch | Playing XI discussion 'I'm not saying they're worried (in these parts, about the loss of sting in the pitch), but they understand that pace has gone out of the pitch… it could spin… The footmarks are there,' he said. Former England batter Mark Ramprakash echoed Lloyd's sentiments and predicted India might play Kuldeep Yadav in the fourth Test. Poll Do you believe the Old Trafford pitch will have more bounce than previous venues? Yes No Unsure 'India may also have a fresh left-arm spinning option if, as rumoured, Kuldeep Yadav comes into the side in Manchester. Traditionally, the Old Trafford surface tends to be dry and abrasive, and to turn as the game goes on. If ever there was a pitch where it would make sense for Kuldeep to come in, this would be it,' Ramprakash wrote in his Guardian column. The fourth Test between India and England will start on Wednesday at Old Trafford. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Will Lionel Messi play? MLS All-Stars brace for clash against Liga MX elite

As anticipation builds ahead of the 2025 MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas, one question dominates the conversation: will Lionel Messi finally make his long-awaited debut in the annual showcase? The Argentine icon was forced to sit out last year's edition due to an injury sustained during the Copa Amrica final. This year was supposed to be different - a celebration of his presence in Major League Soccer, with Messi expected to lead a star-studded MLS side against the best of Mexico's Liga MX. Yet, two days before kick-off, doubts and his Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba were notable absentees during training sessions on both Monday and Tuesday at Austin FC's state-of-the-art St. David's Performance Centre. Of the 30 players named in the MLS squad, 28 reported for duty, including marquee names such as Mexico international Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano and Vancouver Whitecaps striker Brian White. The absence of the two former Barcelona stars did not go unnoticed - even among their fellow All-Stars."I know they're on the roster, and I don't know if they're coming in today or tomorrow," said New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil. "Hopefully they can join like everyone else. With just two training days, it's difficult to build chemistry."Real Salt Lake and United States international Diego Luna shared similar thoughts."Am I surprised? Maybe a little, because they were named in the squad. But they've got their own individual situations," Luna said. "The only cool thing is, they could arrive tomorrow and we get to play together and have fun."As of Tuesday evening, there had been no official word from MLS or Inter Miami regarding a potential withdrawal. Despite having struggled with fitness at times since joining MLS in 2023, Messi has featured in every minute of Inter Miami's last 19 matches across all competitions - a sign that he is league rules stipulate that any player who misses the All-Star Game without a credible injury reason could face a one-match suspension - a potential blow for Inter Miami ahead of their weekend fixture against FC Cincinnati."Leo is more a question for the league, for his club," said Austin FC manager and MLS All-Star coach Nico Estevez on Monday, speaking in Spanish. "I simply coach and direct the players they give me. But I hope so - because having the best player in history is important for everyone. I'm always optimistic. Why not? I hope he can be here."If Messi does take to the pitch, it would be a landmark moment for the MLS All-Star Game. The concept, a mid-season exhibition between hand-picked talents, is largely unfamiliar to football fans outside North America. This year, 14 of the 30 MLS All-Stars hail from outside the United States, Canada and Mexico - a reflection of the league's increasing international them is English striker Sam Surridge of Nashville SC, who enters the match level with Messi atop the MLS scoring charts, with 18 goals each."It is very unique," Surridge said of the experience. "You get to play with some really good players. Training on Monday was brilliant - getting to know some of the lads, a few familiar faces but also meeting people I didn't know. Everyone comes together for this week. Then it's back to business at the weekend."The 2025 match marks the 29th edition of the All-Star Game - the 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic - and the fourth time the MLS and Liga MX format has been used. MLS have won two of the previous three encounters, although Liga MX ran out 4-1 winners in last year's those returning for the Liga MX All-Stars is Tigres UANL's Juan Brunetta, who scored and was named Most Valuable Player in 2024.- EndsTrending Reel
