College Football Analyst Reveals 'Must-Win' Game for Alabama in 2025
College Football Analyst Reveals 'Must-Win' Game for Alabama in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Alabama Crimson Tide went 9-3 last season, a passable record for most programs but not the paragon in the SEC. Alabama's nine wins last year marked the first time since 2007 — their first season under the tutelage of five-time SEC Coach of the Year Nick Saban — that they did not eclipse double-digit victories.

Much like the 2007 season, Alabama was under new management in 2024, hiring Kalen DeBoer away from the Washington Huskies to replace Saban. On Monday, college football insider Joel Klatt discussed DeBoer's standing in Tuscaloosa and among the fans during a segment of The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast.

Klatt discussed ten college football coaches entering a pivotal 2025 campaign, but he started with DeBoer. He believes the fan base is trying to remain patient despite a brutal finish to the 2024 season, including losses to the Oklahoma Sooners and Michigan Wolverines in two of their last three games.
He called DeBoer's first year "underwhelming." given the expectations to win, and win big, at Alabama. Klatt also dissected the 2025 schedule, calling the game against the Georgia Bulldogs a "coin flip" and the early season bout against the Florida State Seminoles a surefire victory.

However, he Zeroed in on the Tennessee Volunteers game, where a loss could push fans to call for his job.
"If you were just to lose to Tennessee — who does not have Nico Iamaleava — and now you're about to go play LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina Gamecocks) and Garrett Nussmeier (LSU Tigers). I think South Carolina and LSU are both better teams than Tennessee. You still have to play Oklahoma. You still have the Iron Bowl."
With a loss, Klatt assumes Alabama would need to win out the rest of the way to make the College Football Playoff, especially with the addition of a loss against Georgia. As proven last year with Alabama, nine wins in the regular season does not equate to a postseason berth despite playing in the SEC.
"That Tennessee game at home, he's got to win that game. The pressure index for Kalen DeBoer, they are trying to be patient, but the patience would wear out real fast if they were to lose that game at home against Tennessee."

Shohei Ohtani throws fastest pitch of MLB career in third mound start for Los Angeles Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his MLB career on Saturday as he continued his return to the mound with two innings during the Los Angeles Dodgers' 9-5 defeat to the Kansas City Royals. Making just his third start as a pitcher for the Dodgers, Ohtani threw a fastball to Vinnie Pasquantino on an 0-2 count that clocked in at 101.7 mph and was grounded into a double play by the first baseman. The Japanese two-way superstar couldn't contain his smile as he walked back to the dugout. 'It's something that I don't think I would have been able to do in a live BP (batting practice) setting, so it's nice to be able to hit this velo and see how my body reacts,' he said afterward through interpreter Will Ireton, per 'I felt pretty good about being able to come back and pitch well, especially considering when I first had the surgery – the second time through was a lot better in terms of recovery than the first time through,' added Ohtani, who did not pitch in his record-breaking debut season for the Dodgers last year after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in 2023. 'Just talking to the doctor, he was very confident that I was able to come back at full form.' Ohtani's 101.7 mph was the Dodgers' fastest of the season and the franchise's second-fastest since the beginning of 2023. Four of the seven pitches which have clocked in at over 100 mph for the Dodgers this year were thrown by Ohtani on Saturday, according to 'There's a little bit of stress, and that's when you start seeing the hundreds and trying to bully guys,' said manager Dave Roberts, per 'And I still thought the sweeper was good, the sinker was good, but no one knows himself better than he does. And so, again, today I thought he was still in control, and it was still good to see triple digits.' While Saturday's pitch was the fastest of his MLB career, Ohtani has previously dialed it up to 102 mph for Team Japan during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Remarkably, that pitch was also to Pasquantino. '(Ohtani) keeps doing that to me,' said the Royals man on Saturday, per 'I just saw the fastest pitches he's ever thrown in his career – two of them are against me. His two hardest throws. I need to talk to him.' The Japanese star allowed one hit to Bobby Witt Jr. and one walk to Maikel García during the first inning at Kauffman Stadium, before sending the Royals down one-two-three in the second. In total, he threw 27 pitches, 20 of which were strikes, and struck out one batter – Jac Caglianone. At the plate, he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. During his five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani had 86 starts on the mound, going 38-19 with an ERA 3.01.

Kansas City Chiefs OL Trey Smith reflects on health issues before the 2021 NFL Draft
During the latest episode of New Heights, Travis Kelce and his brother Jason welcomed Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith. The Pro Bowl offensive lineman opened up about his battle with blood clots at Tennessee. "One week in conditioning, we were doing half-gassers, and I passed out. I had never passed out. I couldn't breathe well," said Smith, "I lost 13 pounds in a day. I remember talking to our team doctor, 'Hey, you guys gotta run more tests on me; I feel terrible. And he's like, 'We're gonna do a blood draw, just go ahead and go to class." Advertisement After starting at left tackle during his sophomore season, Tennessee's medical staff discovered blood clots in Smith's lungs and ruled him out indefinitely. The issue was identified in February 2018, before the start of spring practice. "They rush me to the hospital and figure out that I have blood clots in both sides of my lungs," said Smith, "So that was sort of one of those moments where it's like, man, can I still play football? Like, what does this mean? And pretty much, I was working with the doctors for five months. (I had to go on) blood thinners." Smith started all ten games in his last collegiate season, earning first-team All-SEC honors for the Volunteers. "So it was a crazy experience. But in my junior year, I was able to play the entire season. Decided to stay at Tennessee, "said Smith, "I made a promise to my deceased mom, Dorsetta Smith, that I would get my degree and play in the NFL one day. So I kept my promise." Advertisement Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the best offensive linemen in the league.
