The new-generation G70 model, which is built right here in South Africa, beat 17 other finalists for the overall prize.
This marks the eighth time a BMW has claimed the top honour in the competition, staged by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) for the past 39 years and sponsored by Old Mutual since 2023.
The Suzuki Swift took second overall place in the competition, while the BMW M5 hybrid secured third spot.
'Locally-produced at the BMW's Rosslyn facility, the latest X3 is a beacon of the local industry's capabilities and exceptional manufacturing standards. The German sport-utility vehicle edged ahead in the scoring, thanks to its high refinement levels, innovative design, high level of digitisation and relative value for money,' the SAGMJ said.
The organisation also lauded the Suzuki Swift, for upping the ante considerably over its predecessor, particularly in the area of safety, where six airbags are now standard across the range.

The South African COTY competition is one of a handful in the world that stage physical testing days for the finalists. To that end, the 17 finalists for 2025 were put through their paces back in March, in a three-day evaluation process that included various modules at Zwartkops Raceway and nearby road routes.

Ramaphosa hails BMW's R4. 2bn EV investment as vote of confidence in SA economy

President Cyril Ramaphosa at addressed a launch BMW plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria on Thursday. Image: ANC/X President Cyril Ramaphosa has lauded BMW's latest investment in its Rosslyn plant as a "powerful symbol of trust" in South Africa's industrial future, calling it a major step in the country's green industrial revolution. Speaking at the plant in Pretoria on Thursday, Ramaphosa celebrated the start of local production of the BMW X3 Plug-in Hybrid. The president praised the German carmaker's R4.2 billion investment, saying it underscored South Africa's growing role as a competitive global hub for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. 'BMW's roots may be in Bavaria, but its beating heart is South African. You are building more than cars. You are building a legacy of excellence, inclusion and hope,' he said. The automotive sector contributes nearly 5% to GDP and supports over half a million jobs. As global markets shift toward clean mobility, Ramaphosa said South Africa must seize the opportunity to drive localisation, scale EV innovation, and deepen value chains through critical mineral beneficiation. 'We are finalising incentives for battery cell localisation, EV components, and clean mobility,' Ramaphosa said. 'South Africa is perfectly positioned to lead the mobility of the future.' Ramaphosa urged BMW and other industry players to expand their footprint ahead of the upcoming South Africa Investment Conference, noting the urgency of diversifying export markets in light of rising US tariffs. Ramaphosa also commended BMW's long-standing commitment to skills development. The Rosslyn Training Academy has trained over 2,000 artisans since 1978, with 300 new apprentices each year. BMW's Youth Employment Service programme has placed over 3,500 young people in jobs nationwide. 'BMW's investment is not only economic — it's transformational,' Ramaphosa said. With BMW celebrating over 50 years in South Africa, the President called the latest milestone a testament to resilient partnerships between business, labour, and government. 'As a GNU, we welcome your role in inclusive growth, transformation, and job creation,' he stated. [email protected] IOL

Hunt's homecoming: Durban City go all out to back their new man

Gavin Hunt poses alongside Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia and a new BMW, courtesy of sponsor Supertech, as he prepares for his latest coaching challenge. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Gavin Hunt is a lover of fine, old and young things in life. As such, expectations are high for him to live his best life at Durban City in the upcoming campaign. Hunt was announced as City's head coach this month, and the club has been pulling out all the stops to satisfy his desires. The Team of Choice pulled a rabbit out of the hat earlier this week, announcing Supertech as their vehicle sponsor – the brand behind luxury automotives such as BMW. Hunt was seen in high spirits during the announcement, posing beside a sizzling new BMW together with club boss Farook Kadodia. But Hunt is not only expected to drive in style off the field. The club is also backing him on the pitch with his favourite wheels – an old and new army. Keet, 35, is reuniting with Hunt after the pair worked together at the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, winning the Premiership title during the 2016/17 season. Poggenpoel will also work under Hunt for the second time, having joined him at SuperSport United last season before the coach's departure. The 25-year-old defender will inject young blood into the team, alongside Mokwena, 24, Asare, 26, and De Kock, 24. The reunion phase is expected to continue in the coming days, with Thulani Hlatshwayo and Haashim Domingo reportedly close to signing. Apart from working with tried and tested personnel, Hunt is a nurturer at heart, having unearthed gems such as South Africa's most celebrated export, Benni McCarthy. Hunt finds himself in a favourable position at City, where even his direct superior – technical director Ernst Middendorp – will not interfere in his coaching affairs. Amid reports that the pair would work together, there were concerns about possible clashes, given their strong personalities, expertise and differing points of view. Milford FC up next, and it's all square between us👀 Training's underway and the energy is high! Let's get it🌊#DurbanCityFC #kznderby #45minutes — Durban City FC (@DurbanCity_FC) July 24, 2025 'There won't be any issues at all between the two of them. The important thing is that, specifically, we have Gavin as the head coach,' said Kadodia. 'I have encouraged him (Middendorp) to stay out of the coaching project and focus on the technical director role and on setting up structures for us in the DDC.' With City going all out to back Hunt, the onus is now on him to repay the faith and deliver when it matters most – on the pitch. The season may not yet be underway, but City – like other newly promoted or returning teams – are already being tipped as relegation candidates. Enter Hunt. He must not only prove the doubters wrong but also show that he still has fire in his belly to challenge and compete for honours. Honours do not necessarily mean silverware. They also include building a formidable squad capable of going toe-to-toe with any team in the land. A formidable team not only attracts fans to the stadium but also catches the attention of national team selectors. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has made it clear he will always select players on merit, regardless of the club they play for. Kadodia will therefore be thrilled to see his team back in the top-flight, as the potential of having his players in the national team reflects positively on the club. When Bongokuhle Hlongwane starred for Bafana while at the club, he was snapped up by MLS side Minnesota United – in a record transfer for City. So, while the club is doing all it can to fulfil Hunt's desires, expectations are also mounting on him to repay the trust that's being shown.

EXCLUSIVE: Durban City FC chairperson Farook Kadodia looking to revive Indian community interest in PSL football

Gavin Hunt and Farook Kadodia Gavin Hunt and Farook Kadodia accept a small fleet of BMW's as part of their partnership with the car brand. DURBAN City FC chairperson Farook Kadodia is looking to revive the interest of the Indian community in South African football with his newly-promoted Betway Premiership side. Speaking exclusively to Independent Newspapers at the announcement of their sponsorship from the BMW Durban South on Tuesday, Kadodia insisted that although this is not something he 'wanted to publicise', but felt he it was important to highlight the need for Indian representation in the local professional league. According to Kadodia, when he first formed Maritzburg United (now changed to Durban City), they were part of three Indian-owned teams in the PSL along with Manning Rangers and Santos FC. 'I come from the days where we used football as a method to demonstrate our stance against apartheid. There used to be an all-African league, an all-white league and then we had a league with players from all racial groups in it," said Kadodia. "I grew up in the sort of mixed fraternity where we fought and struggled together. I think football is a lot like that, because it's a fight to stay in this league. It's tough and you need to have your best all the time. But I'm a football fanatic, I don't think giving up is an option."
