GrabCab to launch in July, fares in line with market rate, Singapore News

AsiaOne05-06-2025
Commuters will be able to flag down GrabCab taxis from July, according to a media briefing held on Wednesday (June 4).
GrabCab will start out with a fleet of 40 fifth-generation electric hybrid Toyota Prius cars, with more vehicles including the electric hybrid Hyundai Kona to be added as they expand their fleet to the minimum fleet size requirement of 800 in the future, reported The Straits Times.
GrabCab joins the likes of Comfort, CityCab, Prime, Strides Premier and Trans-Cab to become Singapore's sixth taxi operator.
"Aimed at improving overall ride availability, GrabCab complements existing point-to-point services by serving passengers at taxi stands, via street-hails and through app-based bookings," said Grab in a media factsheet.
The taxis will be equipped with Grab's advanced technologies, including a mobile data terminal — typically known as a taxi meter — that is fully integrated with the Grab Driver app.
Taxis will also be fitted with AI-powered dashcams to detect road safety risks and promote safe driving.
GrabCab's rates are similar to those of existing operators.
The flag down rate for a standard 4-seater will be $4.60, with every 400m under 10km costing $0.26. Subsequently, $0.26 will be charged for every 350m after the first 10km.
"All location-based, time-based surcharges, and booking fees are aligned with prevailing industry rates," Grab said.
GrabCab will offer different rental packages for new cars starting from $117 per day to cater to different driver preferences, compared to other operators which have starting prices between $115 and $135, reported CNA.
GrabCar will offer drivers fuel discounts of up to 40 per cent at Caltex locations islandwide, in addition to charging discounts of up to 25 per cent at Charge+, SP, Volt and Shell.
Grab also offers a range of benefits to its drivers including a safe driving bonus of $1,000 for every 12 months of being at-fault accident free and coverage under GrabBenefits 2.0, which provides access to education sponsorship and upskilling support.
Up to 800 drivers have expressed interest in renting a GrabCab vehicle, of which around 400 to 500 eligible applicants have been selected for the first pool of drivers according to Victor Sim, director of GrabRentals.
Only applicants with a taxi driver's vocational licence (TDVL) and 'good safety records' were chosen, and applicants without a TDVL will be directed to take a TDVL course at approved training centres.
Eligible drivers will be sponsored up to $400 by GrabCab for their TDVL application.
Speaking about competition with other taxi operators, Sim said that GrabCab aims to reactivate the relatively large pool of inactive drivers with TDVLs and "focus on the national supply (of drivers) problem", according to The Straits Times.

US-Malaysia tariff deal expected after Trump-Anwar phone call on eve of Aug 1 deadline

Official sources told The Straits Times that a deal to lower the tariff rate to a maximum of 20 per cent or as low as 15 per cent 'should be' announced by Aug 1. Kuala Lumpur conceded on several issues including halal certification and the supply of rare earths, a critical mineral used in advanced technological applications. 'The call was made earlier this morning after it was proposed by the Americans just a few hours back,' said a top Malaysian government official with direct knowledge of the matter. According to several Malaysian trade and economic officials, KL is set to recognise US halal certification on several products, including pharmaceuticals. This move will likely remove the need for US products to validate their halal credentials with the Malaysian Islamic Development Department. Malaysia is also set to supply the US with rare earths elements. The country currently holds rare earths deposits of more 16 million tonnes that are worth an estimated RM1 trillion (S$302 billion). Rare earths ore mined in Malaysia are currently exported to China since Malaysia lacks the requisite technology to process it. Washington has made the pursuit of rare earths a key component of its national security strategy, as China dominates production of the mineral. Various forms of rare earths are used in a wide range of tech equipment from mobile phones and power generators to defence technology. Malaysia's equity quotas for bumiputeras -- a term used to collectively refer to its Malay majority and indigenous tribes -- was another controversial issue that emerged in Malaysia-US tariff talks. Removing such a key, long-standing aspect of Malaysian economic policy though, would not be politically tenable for the Anwar government. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. [SINGAPORE] Superapp Grab reported Q2 2025 earnings of US$35 million, reversing from a loss of US$53 million in the same year-ago period. This was driven by operating profit and lower finance costs, and also partially offset by higher income tax expenses in Q2 2025. Revenue for the period grew 23 per cent to US$819 million from US$664 million the year prior. Operating profit also rose to US$7 million in Q2 2025 from a loss of US$56 million in Q2 2024. This was driven by higher revenue, improved margins, cost management and lower share-based compensation expenses. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) rose 69 per cent to US$109 million from US$64 million. This was driven by growth in on-demand gross merchandise value and revenue, and improving profitability on a segment adjusted Ebitda basis. Grab's guidance for revenue and adjusted Ebitda remains unchanged. The company is still guiding for revenue to be between US$3.3 billion to US$3.4 billion with a 19 to 22 per cent growth. Adjusted Ebitda is guided to be between US$460 million to US$480 million with a 47 to 53 per cent growth. Grab swings to $25.9 million profit in Q2 as revenue beats estimates

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Grab reported revenue of US$819 million for the six months to June 30, above analysts' expectations of US$811.3 million. Bengaluru - Grab Holdings beat Wall Street expectations for second-quarter revenue on July 30, as consumers boosted spending on its ride-hailing and food delivery platform despite global economic uncertainty. This drove it to a profit of US$20 million ($25.9 million) for the quarter, compared with a US$68 million loss in the same period a year earlier. Grab's push to turn its platform into a superapp, integrating ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery, and other digital services, has drawn a growing number of users willing to pay for its subscription plans. While ongoing US trade negotiations have cast a cloud over global economic stability, leading to concerns about tariffs and elevated costs in South-east Asia, the Singapore economy has remained resilient. It grew 4.3 per cent in the second quarter, avoiding a technical recession. 'What we're seeing is that the more you make our products more affordable, it drives that growth, and it also shields us from some of the macro that you're seeing across the globe,' Grab chief financial officer Peter Oey told Reuters. The company has been attempting to lure price-sensitive consumers to its ride-hailing platform while increasing the number of drivers to keep pace with a growing userbase. Grab reported revenue of US$819 million for the six months to June 30, above analysts' expectations of US$811.3 million, according to LSEG data. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Mr Oey said Indonesia is a profitable market for the company, which seeks to double down on investing in the country. The online service market in South-east Asia has been consolidating, with large players acquiring smaller firms to grow their product portfolios. Reuters reported in May that Grab was exploring acquiring smaller Indonesian rival GoTo, but Mr Oey reiterated that the company is not in discussions with them. REUTERS
