No plans to scrap Mobile Phone Data initiative
PUTRAJAYA has no plans to scrap the Mobile Phone Data (MPD) initiative, as no privacy violations have occurred, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the MPD is in line with Cabinet decisions, local laws and international standards.
'All necessary safety measures have been implemented and the government remains open to improving security mechanisms while continuously monitoring the initiative to maintain public confidence,' Fahmi said in response to Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (PN-Langkawi) who asked whether the initiative would be cancelled.
Fahmi clarified that the MPD did not involve personally identifiable information and the data provided by mobile network operators (MNOs) was not classified as personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
He also noted that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Statistics Department and MNOs held a media briefing on June 9 to explain the initiative.
'The MCMC is aware of public concerns over privacy. However, the data shared by the MNOs is aggregated statistical output, not individual data.
'These statistics are processed internally in a secure environment before being shared with the MCMC,' Fahmi said.
He added that MPD provided accurate, granular and near real-time data to support policy planning in telecommunications and tourism, including a focus on Langkawi, in line with the initiative's original mandate.
Earlier last month, the MCMC clarified that MNOs are only required to provide eight types of data for the MPD, none of which included names, MyKad numbers or phone numbers.
Mobile station international subscriber directory numbers, unique IDs and location data such as latitude and longitude are among the data collected.

KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid distributed via MyKad is proving to be a lifeline for single mothers, offering not just financial relief but also exclusive discounts at supermarkets. 'Supermarkets here give special prices to SARA recipients when we pay with MyKad. It really helps B40 families like mine,' she said. Working as a domestic helper with a monthly income of RM600, Noraini relies on state aid and SARA to support her youngest son, who is still in school. 'This assistance lets me save a little each month,' she added. Her younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, also a SARA recipient, appreciates the convenience and security of using MyKad for purchases. 'I don't need to carry cash or a bank card. It's safer, especially when I'm out with my kids,' said Nor Laily, who lost her husband in a road accident in 2019. Despite earning RM400 a month as a homestay helper and receiving her late husband's pension, supporting her two daughters remains a challenge. The RM200 monthly SARA aid since March has eased some of her financial stress. The SARA initiative, now expanded to 5.4 million recipients, is part of the MADANI Economy framework aimed at uplifting low-income households. Budget 2025 increased allocations for SARA and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) to RM13 billion, with annual SARA aid raised to RM2,100 per recipient. In celebration of National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off RM100 payment for Malaysians aged 18 and above, credited directly to their MyKad-linked SARA accounts. This additional RM2 billion allocation brings total cash assistance funding to RM15 billion, the highest in Malaysia's history. The Prime Minister said Malaysia's name is now held in high regard globally, especially due to its efforts in bringing Thailand and Cambodia to the negotiating table, leading to a ceasefire agreement. 'Malaysia's name is honoured around the world. People are now talking about Malaysia's success in uniting Asean and achieving peace and progress for all. 'Almost every day, we are still in contact. Just last night (Friday), I was speaking with several prime ministers, including Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia. 'I asked about the situation, and he said, 'Thank you very much Prime Minister, no more fighting,' but he asked for our help,' he said in his speech at the National Felda Settlers' Day Celebration and Rural Entrepreneurs' Carnival here yesterday. He said the Thai and Cambodian defence ministers are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to hold detailed discussions on peace efforts between the two countries. Anwar also revealed that US President Donald Trump commended Malaysia's role in facilitating peace between the two Asean nations. 'One of the first things President Donald Trump mentioned was, 'Prime Minister Anwar, fantastic work'. 'That was because of our success in bringing Thailand and Cambodia together to resolve and achieve a ceasefire and peace – something that is hard to achieve elsewhere.' He said the previous 25% tariff was a serious concern as it would have had significant repercussions for the Malaysian economy. 'We are a hub for semiconductors and electrical and electronics (E&E) in South-East Asia. 'Our exports to the United States alone make up 60% of total E&E exports. How much is that? Over RM200bil a year in exports to the United States from E&E and semiconductors alone.' He added that Malaysian semiconductor exports would continue to enjoy zero tariffs. Segamat-JB ETS not going to be ready anytime soon
PETALING JAYA: Those hoping to ride KTM Bhd's (KTMB) Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor Baru will have to wait until the end of the year, if not next year, for their hopes to become a reality. An inspection by The Star along 180km alignment from Segamat to JB Sentral recently found that it is impossible for ETS services to reach the southern city anytime this quarter as significant electrification and signalling works remain incomplete, especially along the 100km stretch between Kluang and JB Sentral. At the section near Johor Baru, the catenary system is still incomplete, with contact wires and other critical components of the overhead line equipment (OHLE) yet to be installed. OHLE is the system of overhead wires and supporting structures that supply electricity to power electric trains, and it is a critical part of railway electrification. Incomplete: A lot of work still needs to be done to KTMB's rail electrification and signalling infrastructure in the second half of the Gemas-JB double tracking project. At JB Sentral (pic), only a rudimentary pole structure is seen on July 28. — MENG YEW CHOONG/The Star The 192km stretch from Gemas to Johor Baru has been touted by some to be ready for service by August, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke saying so earlier in the year. However, there has been no update since the short stretch between Gemas and Segamat began ETS operations on March 15. When KTMB opened advance ticket sales on June 30 for travel up to Dec 31, no southbound ETS tickets were offered beyond Segamat. Last Wednesday, KTMB announced the suspension of its advance ticket sales beyond December, apologising that it will not be offering January 2026 tickets anytime soon. It typically opens ticket sales up to six months in advance. According to train systems specialist Yuslizar Daud, the process of fully installing and testing an overhead electrical system can be lengthy. 'Stringing of the OHLE, tensioning, adjustment with the tracks, energisation, testing and commissioning will take considerable time. Then there is the final inspection by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) before the green light is given. 'I don't see (from the picture) how it can be ready even by September,' said Yuslizar, the former head of the now-defunct Land Public Transport Commission's Rail Division. However, it is understood that KTMB is attempting to accelerate the opening of the 90km stretch from Segamat to Kluang, so that ETS services can be extended to Kluang by this quarter, though it seems that KTMB has yet to submit the relevant application to Apad. Also happening at the same time is the testing of new ETS train sets, which recently arrived from China, in line with the statutory requirement for the first unit – known as the golden train – to log at least 8,000km without demonstrating any fault in what is known as the fault-free run (FFR). FFR is a standard requirement to ensure the integrity of the entire system before it could be deployed for commercial operations, and all new train sets are required to undergo the procedure, though similar sets may pass with a lower testing mileage provided the golden train clocks 8,000km or more flawlessly. It is assumed that KTMB will attempt to operate ETS services to Kluang using its older ETS trains, if Apad gives the green light for the stretch to open for service. Queries sent to KTMB and the Transport Ministry did not yield any insight, with the respective agencies asking The Star to contact the 'other side' instead.
