National U-15 squad to play in two invitational tournaments in Australia in July
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), in a statement today, said this is the first time a national team has been invited to play in these rebranded youth tournaments.
'Following an official Expression of Interest process open to several member associations of the Asian Football Confederation, Malaysia confirmed its intention to participate in both tournaments — a historic step that strengthens the framework of football development in Australia and enhances international cooperation in the region.
'The Malaysian team will compete against top Australian youth players in the Under-15 category for both tournaments,' FAM said.
According to FAM, the match schedule and player list for the tournaments will be announced soon.
FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub, in the same statement, said the governing body is honoured to be part of this important initiative with Football Australia.
The Emerging Matildas Championship will take place from July 6 to 11 at the Home of the Matildas in Bundoora, Melbourne, while the Emerging Socceroos Championship will be held from July 15 to 20 at Valentine Sports Park in Glenwood, Sydney.

Jeneath finds lessons and positives in Women's British Open debut
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian amateur Jeneath Wong can take plenty of positives from her outing at the Women's British Open despite a challenging finish over the weekend. The 20-year-old marked a personal milestone by making the cut for the first time in a Major, eventually placing 71st with a four-day total of 17-over 305 (72-74-77-82) at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club yesterday. Jeneath survived the halfway cut right on the number at two-over but struggled in harsher conditions as wind and rain swept through the weekend rounds on the demanding links course. A links course is a coastal golf course known for its rolling terrain, deep bunkers, and exposure to strong winds. "Definitely not the finish I was hoping for, but making my first Major cut is still a big positive," said Jeneath in an interview with the LPGA. "I learnt a lot this week about managing my game under pressure and staying patient out there. I also felt like my ball-striking held up well against a really strong field, which is a big confidence booster." The reigning Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific champion, Jeneath was making her third Major appearance of the year after missing the cut at both the Chevron Championship and Evian Championship. She also featured in 2023 US Open. Jeneath described the final day as a true test of links golf, with strong winds and rain making conditions extremely challenging and turning each round into a different experience. Still, she called the week unforgettable, from the supportive fans to the historic setting, and said it has only strengthened her resolve to return to more Majors in the future. "Today was definitely tougher as the 'real' links weather came, with the wind and rain picking up a lot during my round," she explained. "The course played a lot more difficult with the strong winds. It made every round seem like I was playing a totally different course. "Overall, it's been an amazing experience playing at Royal Porthcawl. The atmosphere was incredible, the fans were so supportive, and off the course I really enjoyed soaking in the history and the whole vibe of a links Major. It's definitely motivated me to keep working hard to be back in more of these events." Jeneath will head back to the United States for her final year at Pepperdine University in California, where she hopes to cap a strong collegiate season that will prepare her for life in the professional ranks — a path she looks set to take upon graduation.

Alex de Minaur tops Frances Tiafoe in 4th round at Toronto
TORONTO: Alex de Minaur, the 2023 National Bank Open runner-up, is back in the event's quarterfinals after earning a three-set win on Sunday in Toronto. The ninth-seeded Australian edged seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in fourth-round action. Tiafoe registered slightly more winners (29-23) but significantly more unforced errors (49-35). Despite losing each of his first two service games in the second set, Tiafoe rallied to extend the match. de Minaur recorded the lone break of the final set in the penultimate game, then served out the match. "It was never going to be easy, and Frances has the ability to turn the switch on whenever he wants, so it is always very tricky to put him away," de Minaur said. "I think I battled him, myself and the conditions and I am happy to sneak away with a win today." de Minaur moves on to oppose fourth-seeded Ben Shelton of the United States in the quarterfinals. Shelton, down 5-3 in the third set, came back to defeat 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1). Shelton has never advanced past the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, having reached that stage just three times previously, including this year at Indian Wells, California. Another fourth-round match reached the third round on Sunday but didn't go the distance. Sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia advanced when 20th-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain retired while trailing 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 3-0. "I feel super great to be back in the quarterfinals," Rublev said. "Of course, it is not the way I wanted to finish the match, but in the end we played nearly 2 1/2 hours, which is also kind of a lot. It is more than most of the matches. I feel enough tennis for the day and I just want to recover and take as much rest as I can." Rublev's quarterfinal foe will be the winner of the Sunday night match featuring second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States and 19th-seeded Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic. — REUTERS

De Minaur battles past Tiafoe into Toronto Masters quarter-finals
ALEX de Minaur continued his strong form by defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The Australian, fresh off his Washington title win, extended his winning streak to seven matches in a gruelling encounter lasting just under two and a half hours. De Minaur, the ninth seed, will next face the winner of the match between Italian Flavio Cobolli and American fourth seed Ben Shelton. Despite the victory, the Australian voiced concerns over the new 12-day Masters schedule, which has disrupted player routines. 'I didn't enjoy having so much time off. The body is used to going and going,' he said. The match saw nearly 50 unforced errors from Tiafoe, with De Minaur overcoming a mid-match slump in the second set. 'It was never gonna be easy. He's got the ability to switch it on whenever he wants,' De Minaur admitted. 'I was just happy to sneak away with this win.' Meanwhile, sixth seed Andrey Rublev secured his 14th Masters quarter-final after Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/2), 3-0 due to possible cramping. Rublev, last year's runner-up in Montreal, will face either Jiri Lehecka or Taylor Fritz next. - AFP
