Bello strikes out 10 in complete-game effort as Red Sox beat Rockies 10-2 for 5th straight win

BOSTON (AP) — Brayan Bello struck out a season-high 10 in the first nine-inning complete game of his career, Trevor Story hit a three-run homer and the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 10-2 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.
Bello (5-3), who had seven strikeouts after one trip through the Colorado lineup, gave up five hits and one walk. He threw a rain-shortened, six-inning complete game on Sept. 25, 2022, a 2-0 loss to the Yankees.
Ceddanne Rafaela hit a two-run double during a four-run rally in the sixth, followed by a six-run outbreak in the seventh when Story homered and Jarren Duran added a solo shot. Boston had 10 or more hits for the sixth straight game.
Hunter Goodman ended the shutout bid with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, but Bello struck out Ryan McMahon for the final out.
Goodman's infield single on a hard grounder that handcuffed third baseman Nate Eaton in the fourth was Colorado's only hit until Brenton Doyle blooped a single to left in the eighth.
The Rockies tied last year's Chicago White Sox as the only teams to lose 71 games before the All-Star break.
Kyle Freeland (1-10) pitched five shutout innings before running into trouble in the sixth when Story singled to shallow right to dive in Romy Gonzalez with the game's first run. Freeland allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He also struck out six and walked two.
Key moment
After Story's single to right in the sixth, Rafaela lined a two-out double down the line in left to put Boston up 3-0 during a four-run rally.

Rays slugger Junior Caminero to compete in Home Run Derby, start at third base in All-Star Game

Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday that he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday night in Atlanta, then learned hours later that he would start at third base for the AL squad in the All-Star Game the following night. In between, Caminero merely belted his 22nd homer of the season in the seventh inning of a 7-3 win in Detroit. Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all AL third basemen in homers in what has been a breakout season. He is hitting .254 and driven in 58 runs for the Rays, who moved within four games of Toronto in the AL East on Wednesday night. 'I'm going to put on a show. I'm going to try to put on a show just to give the fans the opportunity to get to know me, see my power,' Caminero said. 'Just being there with all those other All-Stars, it's going to be something very special.' Caminero is the sixth player to commit to the Home Run Derby, joining the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, James Wood of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, the Pirates' Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuna Jr. of the hosting Braves. Two more contestants are still to be announced, and Buxton's status is unclear after he was hit in the left hand in Wednesday night's win over the Cubs. Caminero was picked earlier this week as the All-Star replacement for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. He learned he would start at third base after Wednesday night's game after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out of the Midsummer Classic so that he could rest an ailing Achilles tendon. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes was chosen to replace Ramírez on the AL roster. The only Rays players besides Caminero to participate in the Home Run Derby have been Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Randy Arozarena, who reached the finals two years ago before losing to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'We get to see (Caminero) do probably a modified Home Run Derby every time he takes batting practice. I'm excited for him. I'm excited for his family,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'Somewhat of a coming-out party for him. Hopefully, he gets the recognition that we've all seen in the talent and the ability to hit the ball a long way.' ___ AP MLB:

Perez and Caglianone power Royals to 4-3 win over Pirates for 3-game sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered twice, Jac Caglianone hit the longest measured homer by a Royals rookie, and Kansas City beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. Perez broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with his longball off Isaac Mattson (2-1). He opened the scoring with a 444-foot shot to center in the second. But the most impressive homer of the game belonged to Caglianone — a 466-foot, two-run drive to center in the fourth against Bailey Falter. It was the longest homer by a Royals rookie since Statcast started tracking in 2015 and the fourth-longest by any Kansas City player at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals have won six of seven overall. They did not have a multi-homer game this season before doing it Monday night against Pittsburgh, and now they've done it three games in a row. Kansas City hit nine homers in the series. Pittsburgh fell to 0-6 on its nine-game trip ahead of the All-Star break after getting shut out in three straight games at Seattle. Perez had his second multi-homer game of the season and 19th of his career, extending his franchise record. Lucas Erceg (4-2) worked a scoreless eighth and Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth for his 25th save. Ke'Bryan Hayes had a two-run single in the Pirates' three-run sixth. Key moment Perez sent the first pitch of the eighth to the walkway just short of the fountains in right-center. Key stat Kansas City swept a series at home for the first time since a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in early May. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Up next Pirates: Begin a three-game series at Minnesota on Friday. Royals: Host the New York Mets for three games starting Friday. ___ AP MLB:

Wood, Lowe HRs power Washington past Cardinals 8-2 as Cairo earns 1st win as Nats' interim manager

ST. LOUIS (AP) — James Wood hit his 24th homer, Nathaniel Lowe added a three-run shot and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 Wednesday night to give interim manager Miguel Cairo his first victory. Cairo took over when Washington fired manager Dave Martinez and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo hour after a 6-4 loss to Boston on Sunday. Wood hit a solo homer in the seventh inning with an exit velocity of 115.9 mph that traveled 433 feet to center field. Wood has been named an All-Star and will take part in the Home Run Derby. Lowe staked Washington to a lead in the first inning with his 14th homer of the season. The Nationals added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Alex Call and a bloop single with the bases loaded by Jacob Young that scored two runs. Amed Rosario hit a solo homer, his fifth, in the fifth inning, for a 7-1 lead. MacKenzie Gore (4-8) pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven as the Nationals snapped a four-game skid. Andre Pallante (5-5) worked six innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Masyn Winn had three hits for the Cardinals. Key moment Lowe's 360-foot homer in the first inning wasn't nearly as prodigious as Wood's, but it gave the Nationals all the runs they would need. Key stat While Cairo got his first win as the Nationals' manager, it wasn't his first in the majors. Cairo was Tony La Russa's bench coach with the Chicago White Sox from 2021-22 and went 18-16 as interim manager when La Russa went on medical leave. Up next Washington's Michael Soroka (3-6, 5.40) pitches against St. Louis' Miles Mikolas (4-6, 5.36) on Thursday. ___ AP MLB:
