Is AI the end of human storytelling? Pocket FM bets on collaboration

Mint13-05-2025
Audio series platform Pocket FM is betting on collaboration and not competition between humans and artificial intelligence (AI). Rather than replacing human creativity, the company is using AI to support storytellers and scale high-quality audio content. Pocket FM aims to create a platform where humans and AI work together, not against each other.
Talking to LiveMint, Vineet Singh, Head, Brand Marketing and Communication at Pocket Entertainment, said that of late, there has been a lot of chatter about AI replacing humans.
"We always believe that human storytelling is going to be the core part of creativity," he said. 'With AI, we are going to be able to enhance it and scale it with that same quality at a huge number.'
Pocket FM's proprietary tool allows users to write a story, select the background music, and choose an AI-generated voice to narrate it. The tool can also translate the story into multiple languages and change the context according to the geography.
According to Singh, Pocket FM has around 50,000 AI-led audio series. The platform has around 200 million users and works on a micro-transaction model. Under the model, a certain number of episodes are free for a user daily. If they want to listen to more episodes of a series, they need to pay for them. Notably, the free episodes change from series to series.
Romance remains the most popular genre on the platform, followed by drama and thrillers. However, fantasy and horror are growing at a faster pace, he added.
To diversify its storytelling offerings, the company has launched Pocket Novel and Pocket Tools and rebranded itself as Pocket Entertainment.
"We will continue looking at more and more formats and more storytelling options to just go out and entertain the world," Singh said.
Originally launched in India, Pocket FM is now available in the USA and some European countries, such as Germany and the United Kingdom. It also plans to expand into some Latin American countries.
The Lightspeed-backed platform competes with Spotify and new-age content platforms like Krafton-backed Kuku FM and Pratilipi.
In 2024-25, Pocket FM's revenue rose 68 per cent to ₹ 1,768 crore. Its US business is said to be profitable, and the India business is expected to become profitable in the next one to two months.

‘Will hurt their international trade': Piyush Goyal warns of blowback over carbon tax; says EU may hurt itself more

Union commerce and industry minister on Saturday said the 's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is likely to harm European industries more than its intended targets, including India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'There is a lot of opposition to CBAM in the EU also. EU's infrastructure will become costlier. EU's housing will become costlier. EU's cost of manufacturing will become costlier, which will hurt their ,' Goyal said at a press conference. As per news agency ANI, he added that this could actually create more export opportunities for India due to its competitive manufacturing base. Goyal also noted the growing discontent against CBAM among European business leaders. 'When I go to different countries in Europe and I criticise CBAM, all the industry players, CEOs of very large companies, come up to me and thank me. They say you speak like you are our minister,' he said. Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principle of converting challenges into opportunities, Goyal assured that India is fully capable of responding if export interests are harmed. 'We are a sovereign and very powerful nation today, so if anybody hurts our export interest, we will react and retaliate or rebalance,' he said. Goyal also confirmed that the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed on Thursday during 's visit to London, has made strong progress across sensitive areas like gender, environment and intellectual property. 'We have protected all the sensitive sectors of India vis-à-vis the UK... Dairy, rice and sugar, we have not opened for the United Kingdom,' he said. He added that the FTA ensures 99% preferential or zero-duty access for Indian exports to the UK, making it a 'phenomenal' deal that offers both stability and new investment opportunities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'It will not only support export of goods and services, but will also bring a stable, predictable and secure framework in which India can become a trusted partner for the UK's supply chains,' he said. The agreement is part of India's broader goal to double bilateral trade with the UK to $120 billion by 2030. As per news agency PTI, India has also secured an understanding through diplomatic communication (note verbale) to safeguard its interests in case the UK implements a carbon tax in the future. If such a tax affects India's trade benefits under the FTA, the country will retain the right to take countermeasures, including withdrawing concessions.

Governor approves ₹5,000 crore KKRDB action plan for 2025–26

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has approved the ₹5,000-crore action plan for the year 2025–26 prepared by the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB), giving a major boost to development initiatives across the region. Jewargi MLA and KKRDB chairperson Ajay Singh, who released a press note on Thursday, said the approval came in the third week of July after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah submitted the plan for the Governor's assent. 'The early clearance this year will allow the board to begin implementation well on time and take up more development works with added momentum,' he said. The current year's action plan was finalised during the KKRDB board meeting on May 10, 2025, in the presence of elected representatives, including MLAs, MPs, and Ministers. Mr. Singh said the action plan was prepared based on recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee and in line with the Comprehensive Development Report (CDR) index. The allocation has been planned proportionately to the population and categorised under micro, macro, discretionary grants, and administrative expenses, he added. 'In previous years, there had been delays in approval. For instance, the 2023–24 plan was cleared in December, even though the board met in August and submitted the plan soon after. Despite the delay, the board implemented projects worth ₹2,009 crore across key sectors like education, health and infrastructure by the end of March,' Dr. Singh noted. He said this year's action plan was prepared within the fiscal limits set by the State Budget and duly cleared by the Finance Department. 'We had received permission from the Finance Department to prepare a ₹5,000 crore plan, and it has now been approved by the Governor without delay,' he added. The board had submitted the draft to Raj Bhavan promptly after the Chief Minister's approval, and Dr. Singh personally met the Governor to thank him for the swift response. 'The Governor's timely approval in July itself has given Kalyana Karnataka a new impetus for development. It allows us to begin implementation at the earliest and ensure speedy progress in backward areas,' Dr. Singh said.
