Waringstown and Instonians locked at summit as duo back up Cup wins with League triumphs

The Shaw's Bridge side again opted to bowl first in their clash with third-placed Lisburn, and once again their bowlers responded to the challenge by restricting them to 186 in an innings that never really got going.
Ross Adair (20) and Nigel Jones (26) got starts, but only when Ben Calitz was in full flow did Lisburn get a foothold in the contest.
The Irish passport-holding South African hit three sixes and fours in a 42-ball 47, adding 83 for the fourth wicket with skipper Neil Whitworth (36).
However, Cian Robertson spun his left-arm magic, claiming four wickets for just 23 to put the home side firmly in control. Shane Dadswell (three for 30) and two wickets for Ben Rose reaffirmed the advantage, and a final total of 186 looked to be well short of challenging.
Cade Carmichael had missed out in Saturday's Cup win, but the Irish international cashed in with a brilliant 77-ball 117 that included 15 fours and four maximums to break the back of the chase.
His century means that he is the leading run-scorer in the League with 473 runs, just ahead of Jason van der Merwe.
Carmichael added 112 with Rob McKinley (24), and that allowed Inst to coast to a six-wicket win in the 28th over – Dadswell bringing the game to a hasty conclusion by thumping three fours and a six in the final four balls.
For Lisburn, a 2025 season that promised so much is in danger of falling apart, with their main hope for silverware now resting on the Irish Senior Cup where they travel to play Balbriggan in the last-four.
Waringstown kept pace with Instonians thanks to an emphatic seven-wicket win at Cliftonville Academy in a match reduced to 25 overs.
Abhishek Raut hit a 32-ball unbeaten 56 as the home side posted what looked a competitive 174 for five – Varun Chopra making a run-a-ball 36 (five fours) and Hayden Melly 27.
The Topping brothers, though, made light work of the chase as they shared an opening stand of 125 in just 80 balls.
Morgan hit eight fours and six sixes in a 56-ball 87, while younger brother Sam's 36-ball 53 included five fours and three maximums.
John Glass claimed two wickets, but the seven-wicket win was sealed in the 19th over.
Woodvale and North Down shared a dramatic tie in a see-saw game at Ballygomartin Road – a result that saw both happy to get something from the match in the end.
Stevie Saul just missed out on a century, getting two from the final ball of the North Down innings to end on 99 – seven fours, four sixes – adding 127 for the fourth wicket with Mickey Copeland as they made 193 for five in 35 overs.
Woodvale looked beaten as they slumped to 78 for six, but Carl Robinson's 51-ball 64 got them right back into contention as he added 104 in 17 overs for the seventh wicket with Zara Khan (49 not out).
Some 17 were still needed from the last two overs when last man Anek Anil joined Khan, but they chipped away and the equation came down to three from the final ball. Anil managed to scramble two, ensuring a share of the spoils.
North Down finished in the top six for the split, while Woodvale's two points meant they moved off the bottom above Templepatrick.
Meanwhile, in the North West, there was a real shock as leaders Donemana lost by 42 runs to bottom side Bready in a rearranged game.
David Rankin top-scored with 64 as Bready posted 194 for seven – four wickets for Jordan McGonigle, who came out of retirement to compensate for Andy McBrine's unavailability.
Teenager Travis Faulkner took three wickets as the League leaders slumped to 62 for seven, and although they rallied with runs for brothers Billy (38) and DJ Dougherty (28), Faulkner returned to claim his fourth in a victory that lifted Bready off the bottom of the table.

Brendan Rodgers granted Celtic transfer control by one striker with 'dream' on hold

There is set to be major turnover in the Hoops' squad this summer Johnny Kenny has been on the books at Parkhead for nearly four years but it's only now he truly feels like a Celtic player. And he'd like to keep it that way. The Irish youngster was snapped up by the Hoops from Sligo Rovers in January 2022 but spent most of his time away from the club on loan spells with Queen's Park and then Shamrock Rovers. Kenny returned to the fold in January this year and got a taste in the second half of the season with his first start at Aberdeen under his belt – where he bagged his first goal. There was also an appearance from the bench in the Scottish Cup Final and the 22-year-old is now hungry for more. Kenny knows competition is already fierce at Parkhead and it will be even more so with Brendan Rodgers promising to add more punch to his frontline. The boss admitted there are a host of clubs lining up to land the hitman on another loan spell. But Kenny is hoping to stick around this time – and he is adamant he's ready to step into the first team picture with Celts. He said: 'Yes, my dream is to represent this club on a daily basis and play so many games for this club. 'I hope I can break in and get opportunities to do that because that's all I want to do. It's such a big club and I want to be part of it.' Kenny was lethal with Shamrock Rovers and made his mark in the Europa League. But he also believes his game came on leaps and bounds at Celtic in the last six months – with Rodgers playing a huge part. The Hoops manager has high hopes for Kenny and the striker is determined to prove him right. When asked if he's ready to be a full-time Celt, he said: 'Yes, 100 percent. I came in, learned my trade the last few months, learned the system in and out of possession and I feel like I'm ready to kick on now. 'Hopefully, I get the opportunity to do that. My confidence is high at the moment and I think that comes from the manager. 'The Aberdeen game I started, he spoke to me beforehand and gave me the confidence to go out on the pitch and be confident, get a goal and perform. 'That's what happened on the night. As I said, since I came back, the manager – the way he spoke to me in front of the group and individually – it's just been amazing. 'I think it's all down to him. And I hope to get opportunities to repay him.' Kenny is competing with countryman Adam Idah to lead the line – but he's thrilled to have his Irish pal on board. Idah is ready to return to action after sitting out the first couple of friendlies on the back of his international involvement in June. The pair might be in competition buy Kenny is determined to learn as much as he can from the frontman – and hopefully follow his path to the Ireland national team. He said: 'Adam's brilliant, a countryman and you can see how well he's done since he came in over the last 18-months. 'He's always trying to help, whether it's me or the other strikers. He's always there if you need something. 'It's brilliant to have someone in your position and fellow countryman who is always there to help.' ‌ Kenny is also out to help himself and he's already up and running in pre-season with a strike in the 1-0 win against Queen's Park last Friday. There was another run out back in Ireland in the 2-1 victory at Cork City, where not even a bang on the shin was going to stop him getting on the pitch on home soil. Celts are stepping up the pre-season preparations against Estrela in Portugal on Saturday before taking on Sporting Lisbon next week. ‌ What happens next for Kenny though is up for debate. Rodgers hasn't decided yet whether it'll be a peg in the first team dressing room or another stint on the road getting game time. The Hoops gaffer still sees the striker as a long term prospect and the youngster is happy to follow his lead. In the meantime he's out to keep hitting the net and giving his gaffer food for thought. ‌ Kenny said: 'Yes, 100 percent that's what I want to do. If I get opportunities I back myself to score. 'It was good to get off the mark on Friday and I just want to keep getting minutes and hopefully get more goals. 'I'll leave it to the manager to make a decision on that (his future). Wherever I am, obviously I want to play football. 'I want to develop myself and I think playing games is going to develop me. Obviously, I also want to break into the national team and I think playing games is the way I'm going to get into that team.'

Johnny Kenny opens up on his Celtic future as he addresses contract talks and potential loan exit amid transfer interest

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JOHNNY KENNY has told Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers he's ready to sign a new contract now and push hard to become a Hoops goal hero. The 22-year-old Irishman has gone into the last 12-months of his deal after costing a six-figure sum from Sligo Rovers in January, 2022. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 Johnny Kenny celebrates his goal against Queen's Park Credit: Kenny Ramsay The Republic of Ireland under-21 ace is wanted by Bolton - they've had a £500,000 bid rejected - and a host of other clubs, also keen on a loan agreement for the new season. But Hoops manager Rodgers is holding fire just now as he carefully decides Kenny's immediate future - as an established part of his squad plans or to go out again to get more regular action elsewhere. First, though, he wants the frontman - one start, one goal for Celtic - to put pen to paper on a contract extension. Kenny scored in the champions' opening pre-season friendly against Queen's Park while he started in the 2-1 win over Cork City on Tuesday night to grab the Cork Super Cup. He's full of belief - and desperate to pledge his future to his boyhood heroes. Asked if he was keen on a new contract, Kenny - previous loan spells at Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers - said: 'Yes, and hopefully that can be done soon. 'I'd love to sign a new contract for this club. 'At the end of the day it's the club I want to play for. 'Since I came back in January, I can't describe how good the manager's been for me. 'Obviously, he wants me to sign a new deal, so I think that's very promising for me at this club and I'll be happy to sign a new contract. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up 'I don't really see it being a problem at all. 'When it's going to get done, hopefully in the next few weeks. 'We need to start talks now and let's see where it goes from there.' Kenny's prepared to leave Celtic again if Rodgers believes it's his best chance of STAYING with the champions. The ambitious Irish striker's very keen to sign an extended contract beyond his current deal which is up next May. Rodgers has made it clear enough that's his immediate wish for the 22-year-old - and it's great news for Bolton-target Kenny who has been just as crystal with his agent over making that a priority. But once that's done and dusted - and there's no vibe it won't happen - then it's down to Rodgers to decide what the best option is for the Republic of Ireland under-21 ace…going out on loan again or staying within the top squad for the new campaign. Kenny's faith in his manager is such that he's prepared to wholeheartedly go with whatever he feels is right. 4 It feels like a massive, pivotal moment in his career with hopes and dreams of glory with Celtic and his national team filling his head. But the calm former Sligo Rovers youngster - previous loan spells with Shamrock Rovers and Queen's Park behind him - revealed: 'I'll leave it to the manager to make a decision on that. 'Wherever I am, obviously I want to play football. 'I want to develop myself and I think playing games is going to develop me. 'Obviously, I also want to break into the national team and I think playing games is the way I'm going to get into that team. 'Whatever the manager decides, I think he'll have a pathway for me. 'I don't think he's going to keep me here and not play me. 'So, whatever the manager decides I'm all behind it. 'Everything he's told me since January has been 100-per-cent, so I believe in the manager. 'My confidence is high at the moment and I think that comes from the manager. 4 'As I said, since I came back, the manager - the way he spoke to me in front of the group and individually - it's just been amazing. 'I think it's all down to him. 'And I hope to get opportunities to repay him. 'Obviously, he wants me to sign a new deal, so I think that's very promising for me at this club and I'll be happy to sign a new contract. 'I don't really see it being a problem at all. 'When it's going to get done, hopefully in the next few weeks. 'We need to start talks now and let's see where it goes from there.' Kenny's had just one first team start - but managed a goal, against Aberdeen at Pittodrie in May. A clinical winner against Queen's Park at Lesser Hampden last Friday underlined his potential after he finished last season strongly, including a Scottish Cup final appearance off the bench and a converted penalty in the heartbreaking shoot-out defeat to Aberdeen. And Kenny feels ready to be a Celtic player. He said: 'Yes, 100-per-cent. 4 He came off the bench against Rangers last season Credit: Kenny Ramsay 'I came in, learned my trade the last few months, learned the system in and out of possession and I feel like I'm ready to kick on now.
