'He's overpaid until he wins a Super Bowl': NFL legend T.J. Houshmandzadeh questions Brock Purdy's worth
There's a new NFL debate heating up after former wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh went off with some hot takes about the new contract San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy signed.
Houshmandzadeh, who now trains wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, didn't hold back when asked about the deal. His comments came during a TV appearance this week and have now gone viral across football circles.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh calls Purdy 'overpaid' during FS1 appearance
T.J. Houshmandzadeh weighed in on Brock Purdy's recently signed five-year, $265 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, May 22, via Fox Sports 1. Houshmandzadeh is currently the personal coach of the 49ers' star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
During the segment, Houshmandzadeh said,
'I believe they did overpay for Brock Purdy. I would have given him $47 million a year at most.'
He explained his reasons, mentioning that in the 2024 NFL season, the 49ers went 1–6 against playoff teams.
He pointed out that players like Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, and Brandon Aiyuk were injured, but still felt Purdy didn't step up.
'You couldn't really get it done when we needed you the most,'
Houshmandzadeh added.
He made it clear that he sees Purdy as a 'hell of a quarterback,' but believes the team paid him too much too early.

What this means for the 49ers and the locker room
The question now is- was T.J. Houshmandzadeh only speaking for himself, or was he also hinting at how Brandon Aiyuk and others on the team might feel? Since he is Aiyuk's personal coach, many are wondering if the statement reflects locker room opinions.
This comes just months after Purdy missed the playoffs and had 20 touchdown passes in 2024.
Critics are questioning why he got such a big contract without a major postseason run.
Houshmandzadeh compared the situation to Jalen Hurts, who was once called overpaid, but later led the Philadelphia Eagles to a
Super Bowl
win, making his contract worth it.
Houshmandzadeh told Fox Sports: 'If Purdy takes the 49ers to the Super Bowl and they win it, then the contract is worth it. Until he does that, he's overpaid.'
Now, fans and insiders are watching closely to see how this comment affects Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers' locker room ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with ‘family' member steals spotlight from celebrity golf event
Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with 'family' member (Getty Images) As Aaron Rodgers inches closer to the twilight of his NFL career, the four-time MVP has shown that some bonds matter far more than stats or accolades. Amid a break before training camp, Rodgers made his way to the scenic setting of Lake Tahoe to participate in the annual American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament that's as much about connection as competition. Aaron Rodgers finds solace in unexpected bond with his 'Lake Tahoe Grandma' While Rodgers' estrangement from parts of his biological family has long been known, his affectionate reunion with a woman he fondly calls his 'Lake Tahoe grandma' turned heads for all the right reasons. The 41-year-old quarterback greeted Carol Sargent, his longtime friend, with a warm embrace and a genuine smile—offering a rare glimpse into the emotional side of the famously private athlete. Their story began nearly two decades ago when Sargent introduced herself to Rodgers at the same tournament. 'Favorite part of the year. Because we've made a really nice friendship, and we appreciate each other and nice to catch up,' Sargent told Daily Mail, highlighting the significance of their enduring bond. Despite not being related by blood, Sargent and Rodgers have shared a relationship that is deeply rooted in mutual respect and admiration. 'He's a wonderful person, so I feel very fortunate,' she continued. 'It's just been a wonderful friendship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 기미, 레이저말고 이렇게 해보세요 에스테틱최원장 Undo He's thoughtful, he's caring. A great, great friend.' In a world where headlines around Rodgers often revolve around controversy or on-field drama, his heartwarming interaction with Sargent felt refreshingly authentic. The quarterback, typically stoic and guarded in public, was visibly relaxed and cheerful—far removed from the often intense figure seen on game days. UNC insiders say Bill Belichick is ‘second fiddle' again as Jordon Hudson steals preseason thunder
Bill Belichick called 'second fiddle' to Jordon Hudson (Getty Images) Bill Belichick, the NFL's most iconic coaching figure not named Vince Lombardi, is making headlines — but not just for football. As the former Patriots mastermind gears up for his college coaching debut at the University of North Carolina, attention is increasingly shifting from the field to his personal life, particularly his relationship with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson. Jordon Hudson overshadows Bill Belichick's College debut as UNC drama heats up College football analyst Paul Finebaum captured the sentiment during his appearance on ESPN's First Take. 'He's only the most-famous NFL coach of all time this side of Vince Lombardi, but lately he's played second fiddle to his girlfriend. I can't believe I'm actually saying that, but I am.' And he's not the only one noticing. The buzz surrounding Hudson has snowballed ever since she publicly stepped into the spotlight. Her refusal to entertain questions during Belichick's CBS Sunday Morning interview in April became a headline itself, triggering awkward exchanges between the network and Belichick. From speculation about being barred from UNC facilities — which the university has denied — to a bizarre allegation about hijacking a Dunkin' Donuts Super Bowl commercial, and even reported friction with Belichick's ex, Linda Holliday, Hudson's presence has kept the media swirling. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo The narrative seems to stand in direct contrast to the buttoned-up discipline Belichick once demanded from his Patriots roster, where minimizing distractions was gospel. Despite the noise, Belichick insists there's a clear separation between personal matters and football responsibilities. 'Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship,' he clarified in an email, as revealed by WRAL. 'Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests… to her. Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it. ' Still, the spotlight doesn't fade easily — especially when the relationship overshadows Belichick's new role at UNC. His first test arrives September 1, when the Tar Heels host TCU in what promises to be a high-stakes season opener. But how Belichick manages the transition from NFL legend to ACC underdog remains the biggest unknown. As Finebaum put it, 'How does he do on the field? Mack Brown did not leave a great cupboard in Chapel Hill and I think Belichick has recruited well. Can he navigate the nuances of college football, that is really the question?' ESPN's Kevin Clark echoed that skepticism, drawing parallels to Belichick's early NFL days. 'I think that UNC roster is not very good going into this season… It might be one of the least successful teams Bill Belichick has had in a long time, maybe since Cleveland.' With UNC looking to break a title drought that dates back to 1980 and Belichick managing both a rebuilding roster and relentless public intrigue, his debut season promises no shortage of drama — on and off the field.
