GMA Networka day ago
Three areas are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Tropical Depression (TD) Bising slightly intensified over the west of extreme Northern Luzon, PAGASA said Friday.
In its 11 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, PAGASA said the center of TD Bising was seen moving 15 kph west southwestward at 280 kilometers west northwest of Calayan, Catagan with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph, gustiness of up to 70 kph, and a central pressure of 1,000 hPa.
The following areas have been placed under Signal 1:
The western portion of Babuyan Islands (Calayan Isl. and Dalupiri Isl.)
The western portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Burgos, Pasuquin, Dumalneg, Bacarra, Laoag City, Paoay, Currimao, Badoc, Pinili)
The northwestern portion of Ilocos Sur (Caoayan, City of Vigan, Santa Catalina, San Vicente, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, San Juan, Cabugao, Sinait, San Ildefonso)
PAGASA said that areas under Signal No. 1 may experience strong winds with a speed of 39 to 61 kph within the next 36 hours, with minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Bising is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday afternoon, with possible re-entry on Sunday morning and re-exit on Monday.
The TD may also develop into a tropical storm by Saturday and further intensify as it moves over Taiwan, raising the possibility of raising TWCS No. 2 over Batanes and Babuyan Islands. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PAGASA: 2025 storms 'less severe' compared to last year

An official from PAGASA on Saturday said the tropical cyclones that the Philippines will be experiencing this year will not be as severe as what the country endured in 2024 due to the absence of La Niña. 'As compared to last year, hindi siya kasing lala unlike last year… October to November isang buwan lang ito ay anim na sunod sunod na bagyo, actually typhoon and super typhoon categories,' PAGASA Deputy Administrator Mar Villafuerte said at a news forum in Quezon City. (As compared to last year, it's not as bad as last year... October to November is just one month; it's six consecutive typhoons, actually typhoon and super typhoon categories.) To recall, during the last quarter of 2024, the country endured six back-to-back tropical cyclones within less than 30 days, which heavily affected Luzon. Villafuerte's remark was backed by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum. 'On the average hindi [ganun kalala]… dahil walang La Niña,' Solidum said. (On average it's not that bad… because there's no La Niña.) La Niña is characterized by unusually cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific (CEEP). It is usually associated with above-normal rainfall conditions. In April, PAGASA announced the termination of the La Niña alert in the country as normal rainfall conditions are expected. 'Of course, hindi natin isinasawalang bahala… na baka maging kampante ang ating mga kababayan. Kapag merong nasa development phase pa lang siya… or even two weeks before na magkaroon ng tropical cyclone, ini-inform na natin ang ating mga kababayan para mapaghandaan ahead of time,' Villafuerte said. (We are not ignoring the fact that our countrymen may become complacent. When something is still in the development phase or even two weeks before a tropical cyclone occurs, we inform the public so they can prepare ahead of time.) PAGASA earlier said the country may experience 16 to 19 tropical cyclones this year. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Parts of Metro Manila hit by floods as Habagat rains persist

Several areas in Metro Manila were flooded Saturday as the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat continued to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms. Ankle-deep floods were seen along parts of Greenwoods Avenue in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig, as shared by YouScooper Pristina Jimenez. State weather bureau PAGASA had released a thunderstorm advisory for nearby provinces Rizal, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), meanwhile, reported gutter-deep floods along EDSA Aurora tunnel northbound and EDSA Shaw tunnel earlier in the morning. Heavy rains were also experienced on some roads in Metro Manila. #BantayPanahon: May kalakasang pag-ulan at bugso ng hangin ang nararanasan ngayon sa Samar Avenue sa Quezon City, as of 11:00 a.m. — DZBB Super Radyo (@dzbb) July 5, 2025 #BantayPanahon: Malakas na ulan, nararanasan sa R.M. Blvd. sa Sta. Mesa, Maynila, as of 10:45 a.m. | via Mao dela Cruz — DZBB Super Radyo (@dzbb) July 5, 2025 In its daily weather bulletin issued 4 a.m. Saturday, PAGASA said the Southwest Monsoon was affecting not just Metro Manila, but also Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the rest of Cagayan Valley. These areas were seen to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms also due to the Habagat were felt in the rest of the country. Batanes and Babuyan Island in northernmost Luzon were feeling the effects of the trough of Tropical Storm Bising (international name: Danas), which is expected to reenter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday morning. PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains all over the country. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Trough of Bising affecting extreme N. Luzon, Habagat affecting rest of PH

The trough of Tropical Storm Bising (international name: Danas) will continue to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over extreme northern Luzon while the Southwest Monsoon, or habagat, is affecting the rest of the country, according to PAGASA. In a weather advisory on Saturday, PAGASA said scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Babuyan and the Babuyan Islands in the next 24 hours due to the trough of Tropical Storm Bising. Similar weather conditions are expected over Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and the rest of Cagayan Valley because of the Southwest Monsoon. As of 10 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm DANAS was estimated, based on all available data, to be 460 km West of Basco, Batanes (20.1°N, 117.6°E). It is moving east northeastward slowly and has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 90 km/h, and central pressure of 994 hPa. Its strong winds extend outwards up to 330 km from the center. "Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to continue monitoring for updates related to this tropical cyclone," said PAGASA. "(Bising) DANAS is forecast to intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm within the next 24 hours and is expected to maintain its strength while passing over Taiwan Strait," it added. PAGASA also said that Bising may "re-entry over the northwestern boundary of PAR" by Monday for a short period. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
