KUANTAN: Two Chinese nationals were killed, while another Chinese national and a local family of five were injured in an accident involving two vehicles at Kilometre (km) 234.7 of the East Coast Expressway (LPT) heading towards Kuantan this afternoon.
Kuantan police chief ACP Wan Zahari Wan Busu stated that the accident, which occurred around 2 pm, involved a Mercedes-Benz and a Nissan X-Trail.
'The accident is believed to have happened when the Nissan X-Trail, travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan, suddenly lost control and crashed into the right divider before stopping in the left lane. A Mercedes-Benz coming from the same direction failed to avoid it and rear-ended the vehicle,' he said in a statement today.
He said two Chinese passengers in the Mercedes-Benz died at the scene, while the car's driver hurt his right hand and suffered cuts.
Wan Zahari added that the driver of the Nissan X-Trail suffered hip injuries and was being treated in the Red Zone (critical) of Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan.
'Four other passengers, consisting of three adults and a child, were also hurt and are receiving treatment at HTAA. Two of them were admitted to Red Zone, while the other two are in Yellow Zone,' he said.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and both vehicles will undergo further inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom).

Dashcam recording of the 12.21am accident went viral after it was uploaded on Facebook. The footage showed a Proton Wira overtaking in the right lane while a Proton Persona overtook from the left and re-entered the right lane, leading to a rear-side collision. The impact caused the Wira to lose control and crash into a road divider. The 21-year-old Wira driver lodged a police report yesterday. Johor Baru (North) police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh, confirmed the Persona driver was remanded, and her statement was recorded. "She tested negative for alcohol and drugs following breathalyser and urine screening," Balveer said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. SEREMBAN: Three motorcyclists were killed and 12 others injured in a massive pile-up involving 15 motorcycles, a car, and a lorry on the North-South Expressway early this morning. The accident occurred at KM262.5 northbound near Seremban around 2.30 am. Initial police investigations revealed that the crash began when three motorcycles at the front of a convoy collided, causing a chain reaction. 'Twelve motorcycles behind them were unable to avoid the fallen riders, leading to multiple collisions,' said Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din. The impact also involved a car and a lorry, which were struck by some of the motorcycles. Three victims, aged between 18 and 20, died at the scene due to severe injuries. Twelve others were rushed to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, with two in critical condition in the ICU. Mohamad Hatta confirmed that the bodies were sent to Hospital Rembau for post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Authorities have urged motorcyclists to ride cautiously and avoid reckless maneuvers. "The video of the incident showing the car and another car with a female driver at the wheel overtaking each other went viral," ACP Balveer said in a statement. He said the account holder of the Community Road Johor – CRJ Facebook page, uploaded the 60-second video. "Our investigation found the male driver had overtaken the 24-year-old female driver on the right lane," said ACP Balveer. He said this prompted the other driver to overtake the male driver from the left lane and immediately enter the right lane with the Proton Wira 1.3GL behind her. ACP Balveer said the male driver then hit the rear part of the right side of the woman's car, adding the male driver failed to apply his brakes. He added that this then caused him to hit the road dividers. "Both drivers tested negative for drugs and driving while intoxicated," he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. ACP Balveer called upon those who have information on the case to contact the investigating officer Insp Ong Jing Siong at 011-16490168.
