Book launch celebrating V.V. Kumar's 90th birthday with anecdotes, tributes, and memories from former cricketers and personalities.
It was an evening of celebration, filled with fascinating anecdotes and a trip down memory lane during the launch of a book on former India leg-spinner V.V. Kumar to commemorate his 90th birthday.
The book titled Celebrating V.V. Kumar @ 90 features articles by former cricketers and other eminent personalities, including G.R. Viswanath and S. Venkataraghavan. It was released by C.D. Gopinath, the only surviving member of India's first Test win in 1952 against England, with Kumar receiving the first copy.
'He and I played together for several years. He was a good team man. He was not only very popular but cheerful and made a lot of people laugh,' said Gopinath. 'His bowling was phenomenal. He had so much control over his bowling that he could do anything he wanted. The way he was dropped was unfair. He would have been highly successful and won a lot of matches for India,' he added.
Kumar scalped a five-for on debut against Pakistan in New Delhi (1961) but played just one more Test, versus England in Mumbai.
N. Ram, Director, The Hindu Group, who has written a chapter in the book, highlighted Kumar's immense contribution to domestic cricket despite being overlooked by the selectors. In 129 First Class matches, Kumar scalped 599 wickets and was the first to go past the 400-wicket mark in the Ranji Trophy.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumar expressed his gratitude for the friendships he had forged during his cricketing days.
'I am grateful for this emotional meeting. I owe a lot to Gopinath, who was my captain and mentor. I have great respect and affection for my captain, who gave me the confidence in my first game against Bombay (Mumbai),' said Kumar.
'The next best thing that happened to me was always the company that I had during my cricketing days, whether it was juniors or State matches. The team moved as one, and the days were enjoyed.'
The idea for the book originated from a conversation among former Tamil Nadu cricketers V. Krishnaswamy, P. Mukund, A.G. Satvinder Singh, and P.R. Ramakrishnan, and was compiled by Partab Ramchand.

Leg break googly Bowler 'Mystery' is a word that always brings a sense of excitement with it. In cricket too, mystery bowlers over the years have brought with them a sense of anticipation and thrill among the cricketing fraternity. The same gusto was seen in Indian cricketing circles when Varun Chakravarthy started making inroads in Indian cricket as a mystery spinner. Varun started his cricket journey as a wicketkeeper batter but left cricket to concentrate on his studies in college. He completed the Architecture degree and started working as a freelance Architect after that. During this time, Varun was playing tennis-ball cricket, and eventually, at the age of 25, he decided to quit his job to pursue a career as a professional cricketer. Chakravarthy then joined CromBest Cricket Club as a seam-bowling all-rounder, but a knee injury forced him to eventually become a spinner. The move turned out to be a masterstroke as he started making all the right noises as a mystery spinner in 2017-18 when he picked 31 wickets in seven games in a one-day competition for Jubilee Cricket Club. Playing in the fourth division of the Chennai League, Varun started working on his variations and slowly started moving up through the ranks of Tamil Nadu Cricket. He came into the spotlight during the 2018 Tamil Nadu T20 League as he played a major role in Madurai clinching the title that year. It turned out to be a breakthrough season for the young spinner as Varun got an opportunity to bowl as a net bowler for the Chennai and Kolkata franchises in the Indian Premier League. He finally caught the eyes of Tamil Nadu selectors and made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu that season as he picked 22 wickets in 9 games. He also made his first-class debut against Hyderabad in the 2018-19 season of the Ranji Trophy. Ahead of the 2019 season of the Indian Premier League, Varun Chakravarthy was bought by Punjab, and he made his debut against Kolkata in the 2019 edition of the tournament. He had the worst possible start as he was hammered for 25 runs in his first over. Varun, though, was still rated highly and was selected by Kolkata for the 2020 edition of the IPL. He straightaway made an impact and picked 17 wickets in the tournament and was so impressive that he received his maiden India call-up for the Australia tour in the same year. He was later ruled out due to an injury but was selected again for the England series but was again left out due to fitness concerns. He finally made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka in 2021 and was later included in the Indian squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2021, on the back of another successful Indian Premier League season where he picked 18 wickets. Varun came into the marquee event with high hopes, but his performance was below par, and he went wicketless in the three games he played. India crashed out of the World Cup in the Super 12 stage, and Chakravarthy was also left out of the Indian squad. The 2022 season of the Indian Premier League also did not go according to the plans, as he picked up only 6 wickets in the 11 games he played. From 2023, it was as if the start of Varun 2.0, as the mystery spinner emerged as a completely different bowler and rediscovered himself. Even though Kolkata failed to make the playoffs that season, Varun stood out with 20 wickets in 14 games. He followed it up with another stellar campaign in 2024, claiming 21 wickets in Kolkata's title-winning run. Back-to-back remarkable IPL seasons earned Varun a return to the Indian side in 2024 for the first time since 2021. In his comeback series against Bangladesh, it took him some time to hit his stride, but in South Africa and then against England, he had the batters dancing to his tunes. Shreyas Iyer would have never made India Test squad in England, says Aakash Chopra: ‘Even Sarfaraz, Jurel are sitting out'
Despite his impressive run on the domestic circuit and India's ODI set-up this year, Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer would not have made the Test squad in England in any scenario, said former India opener Aakash Chopra. There were questions raised over Iyer's exclusion from India's extensive 18-member squad announced in May, and the situation sparked more questions about the 30-year-old's red-ball future at the international level. Iyer was in blistering form in the IPL, leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish with his best season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at a 50-plus average and a staggering 175.07 strike rate with 39 sixes. Iyer also had a productive Ranji Trophy season besides leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win in December 2024. In nine First Class matches, including an Irani Cup triumph, Iyer aggregated 699 runs with two centuries and three fifties. However, that would not be enough to make a comeback to the Test squad for Iyer, who last represented India during the 2024 home series against England. Chopra noted how even Iyer's Mumbai teammate Sarfaraz Khan who is ahead in the pecking order missed out on a berth in England, insisting that the former must patiently wait for his second wind. Save for the returning Karun Nair, debutant Sai Sudharsan and a wobbly lower-order, India's front-line batters all came to the fore during the Headingley Test. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant (2), KL Rahul, skipper Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal all struck centuries, making it the first time India tallied five centuries in a Test. 'There is no problem with the batting as such. But he has to wait for his chances; he won't get a chance straightaway right now. He would've never made it to the squad for the England tour. The remaining ones also haven't had their chance,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'If you think about it, Karun Nair has played just now. Sarfaraz Khan is not being given the chances. Dhruv Jurel is sitting outside. The players who are already there, if they aren't only getting the chances, then how can Shreyas Iyer get a look in?' he added. 'I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final. He did well in white-ball cricket, but his time will come. He will have to wait just a little bit,' said Chopra. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had reasoned that there was no room currently for Iyer in the scheme of things despite his solid form at the domestic level. 'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,' he said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai when announcing the Test squad in late May.

And among the key takeaways from the squad announcement was the confirmation of top-order batter Shubman Gill succeeding Rohit Sharma as India Test captain, as well as the maiden Test call-ups to Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh and a recall for Karun Nair after eight long years.
