
Nissan Is Trying to Delay Supplier Payments to Ease Spending
Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa may have only been in his job since April, but the tide that he shifted at the automaker has been anything but calm. Just last month, the 46-year-old announced a new restructuring plan called Re:Nissan, which heavily focuses on consolidating the automaker's current assets, including cutting nearly 19,000 jobs, as well as the shutdown of seven global assembly plants.
'It is a very, very painful and sad decision to take. We wouldn't be doing this if it were not necessary for the survival of Nissan,' Espinosa said at the time.
However, according to a new report by Reuters, Japanese automaker Nissan is adopting a unique approach to regulating its cash flow and spending, involving its suppliers, as revealed by a newly surfaced batch of internal emails that offers a clearer look at how tight things have become behind the scenes.

According to a newly surfaced batch of internal emails reviewed by the newswire and close internal sources at Nissan, the automaker has requested that some of its suppliers in Europe and the United Kingdom agree to delayed payments in exchange for more compensation. This strategy is designed to provide temporary relief from Nissan's fiscal crisis. Following his appointment as Chief Executive in April, Espinosa has been working to stabilize operations at the company amidst its financial pressures.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Nissan suppliers were presented with two options: they could either stick to the original payment schedule or agree to a slight delay in exchange for additional compensation. In the former case, HSBC would provide upfront payments to suppliers, leaving Nissan on the hook with the British bank to pay back with interest. Despite this, this kind of arrangement seeks to provide immediate liquidity for the company and its limited resources.
This course of action highlights Nissan's efforts to free up cash before the end of the April-to-June quarter. As part of this initiative, Nissan intends to shift some payments originally scheduled for June into mid-August, and in some situations, even as far as September.

Surprisingly, this approach to deferred payments is not new for Nissan. A similar tactic was said to be utilized in March near the end of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Additionally, there are separate allegations suggesting that Nissan may have underpaid suppliers in Japan, potentially violating Japanese laws. In a statement to Reuters, Nissan acknowledged the existence of this program and confirmed that it had offered 'more flexible payment terms' to its suppliers. The company further explained that the decision is tied to maintaining enough liquidity to support ongoing turnaround efforts and to cover upcoming bond repayments.
According to internal emails exchanged between staff members in Nissan's European and UK purchasing and treasury departments, seen by Reuters, this effort to lean up its spending came 'from CEO top down.' However, Nissan later told the newswire that the CEO 'didn't mandate functional tasks in regions' and declined to comment on internal goals or discussions.

Further, an email exchange involving a Nissan treasury department director mentioned a 'purchasing task' intended to free up €150 million (~$175 million) by delaying payments past the end of the quarter. A separate internal document from October 2024 reviewed by Reuters showed that Nissan saved an estimated €59 million (~$69 million) through flexible payment arrangements with more than a dozen suppliers and other companies it contracted in the region, including companies like the staffing firm ManpowerGroup as well as the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, which provides sea shipping services.

This discovery is especially damning because it comes as Nissan is hemorrhaging money in ways that would make Dave Ramsey and Caleb Hammer seethe with rage. Nissan previously posted a net loss of ¥700 billion (~$4.5 billion) for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, and reported that it held ¥2.2 trillion (~$15.1 billion) of cash on hand and equivalents. Nissan expects to post a loss of ¥550 billion (~$3.8 billion) this quarter.
This is solely my opinion, but I think Nissan needs to be examined more closely from an outside perspective. Granted, Ivan Espinosa intends to right-size the company, reduce its footprint, and reduce its workforce as part of its Re:Nissan plans. Just saying, Stellantis hired McKinsey, and they aren't unfamiliar with helping other automakers.

After driving it for a week and having driven cars with fewer options for a lot more money, the Z quickly raced its way to my heart. My husband even said he'd drive one daily. Here are 7 reasons why we'd do it. 1. There's more cargo space than meets the eye When my eyes first landed on the Z NISMO, I assumed it suffered a case of Miata syndrome: looks cool and drives great, but lacks space to make it suitable for daily driving or errand running. I was wrong. The back of it slopes down for aerodynamics, giving the illusion that there was next to no space under the rear hatch. I lifted it to take pictures of it and was shocked. There was a long, flat surface with a cargo net attached and cubby holes behind the driver and passenger seat. It held gallons of milk, eggs, wine bottles, and other breakables without incident. I can't confirm or deny this, but even driving like a hooligan didn't set those items loose. There's easily enough trunk space for a suitcase (or two), backpacks, gym bags, or a racing suit and helmet. Since you know, you'll probably be headed to the track. Aside from trunk space, the center console had plenty of usable space, the door panels had deep pockets, and the glove box was respectably large. Nissan didn't skimp on interior quality and tech Most sports coupes I've driven have very bare-bones interiors, save for cars from companies like Mercedes or BMW. The Nissan Z's interior was impressive, to say the least, as every bit was lined in Alcantara, and the high-resolution gauge cluster was responsive, intuitive, easy to customize, and attractive. The Z came with a 9-inch touchscreen for the media center, and when paired with your phone, connected wirelessly to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. To boot, the NISMO comes with a premium 8-speaker sound system from Bose was an amazing way to hype myself up while I zipped and zoomed (see what I did there? With the 'z' theme?) through the mountain roads of Central Oregon's Cascade Lakes Highway. Source: Kristen Brown The Recaro seats that come with the car were firm and heavily bolstered but still comfortable for extended drives. I spent a solid three hours in the driver's seat looking for places to take photos of it and I wasn't sore at all. I'm typically sore after an hour and a half in performance-style seats. But not in the Z NISMO. I also found the cabin to be quiet, even with a loud exhaust. Long trips wouldn't be much different than driving across state lines in your friend's loud Subaru. 3. The twin-turbo V6 is surprisingly efficient, thanks to versatile driving modes Before you roll your eyes, get this: even after a spirited driving session in the mountains, driving through busy downtown Bend during commute time on a weekend, and bumper-to-bumper traffic on my way home from Sisters, I was achieving an average of 25 mpg. Which is astonishing for how primal this car is when its potential is employed. I spent the majority of my drives in Normal mode. This mode tames the 9-speed transmission to be better suited for daily driving, as it's less aggressive and prioritizes keeping the Z in the low-rev range. But most of the Z's torque is midrange, so a good chunk of its power is still usable in traffic without putting a lot of strain on the engine or transmission. Source: Kristen Brown Sport mode was great for the mountains, as it kept the car in the gears longer to get every ounce of torque to the wheels. Twenty-five miles to the gallon, switching between Sport and Normal is phenomenal when you look at the numbers. Sport+ is a trim-exclusive driving mode that makes it even MORE aggressive for track driving. It shifts even quicker than Sport mode, which makes the rear drive wheels receive all 420 horsepower from the mid-mounted 3.0-liter engine quicker. That way, you can keep up with your local track's frequent Porsche, BMW, Toyota Supra, or Mustang track day racers without breaking a sweat. 4. The NISMO is auto-only, which isn't as fun, but is statistically better for daily driving Before I had kids, I drove my 2002 Subaru WRX daily. It had a very easy five-speed manual, and it was so much more fun and engaging to drive. I do think the NISMO's extra 20 horsepower over the Performance edition is put to better use with an automatic, since, statistically, a human can't shift as quickly as a computer can. I would have loved to drive the Z with the optional six-speed since I've heard nothing but great things about that transmission, but the Z NISMO's automatic is responsive, quick, efficient, and fun, so I didn't miss the manual too much. Source: Kristen Brown Plus, as much as I like to think I'm a smooth shifter, there's no way I'd be getting 25 mpg on average with a twin-turbo V6 if it were a stick. I'd wager I'd be getting more like 19 mpg if I were driving a manual. Which still isn't bad for the kind of car it is, but you'd be at the pumps more often. Since it takes premium and premium only, that can be an expensive daily driver. 5. If you like people drooling over your whip, the Z is certainly an attention hog Admittedly, Nissan's marketing for the Z wasn't as enthusiastic as it probably should have been. There's so much history, incredible engineering and tech, and raw power, and it's a shame that the one I tested was the only Z NISMO I've seen in the wild. They're sort of rare, which is a damn shame if you ask me. Its rarity made it quite the spectacle in my quiet mountain town, and every time I was at a stoplight, I'd hear the person in the car next to me asking the driver, 'Is that the Z NISMO?' I saw troves of people taking pictures, kids jumping and pointing, husbands watching it longingly drive away, it was truly a sight to behold. My favorite game was to ask people how much they think it costs after rattling off the specs of it. Most guessed over $80,000, and when I said it was $64,990, they were all stunned. Everywhere I parked, even at the grocery store, people wanted to know about the sleek, sexy, and somewhat loud Z NISMO. Introverts would hate it, but I love talking cars. 6. The visibility from the driver's seat was surprisingly good Most sports cars make me feel like I'm sitting in a bathtub, leaning over the steering wheel to see the end of my hood, the corners, and beyond the fat A-pillars. The Z NISMO was shockingly easy to see out of, and even though it came with all the bells and whistles of Nissan's safety suite (like pedestrian detection, auto emergency braking, etc), I didn't need them while driving. I could see everything at all times, which made me feel much more confident and comfortable. Plus, if you think about it, that would be an advantage on the track, too. For what it is, it's really not that expensive Even if you were driving to the dentist for a root canal in the Z, you'd be smiling the entire way there. The most mundane drives were so much fun in the Z, thanks to the cozy and sporty interior, the pleasant exhaust note, the sporty driving feel (even in Normal mode), the amazing sound system, and the user-friendly technology that helped it feel less like a gutted engine on wheels for the sake of speed. Some cars just look better without angles The boxy trend for SUVs is on a roll with manufacturers recognizing that buyers want the rugged look even if they have no intention of doing anything more challenging than summer car camping with the kids. In a sea of rounded-off SUVs and crossovers, the boxy look is very much on the rise. Buyers also want the practicality of squared-off versions that provide more space, in addition to a stronger presence on the road. Not all SUVs have taken this path, but we applaud the ones that have. Let's take a closer look at four standout models that went boxy and benefited from the design change. 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe — Source: Hyundai Let's put it this way. There was nothing wrong with the last Santa Fe. Its only major demerit was the fact that it didn't especially stand out in a crowd with its ubiquitous shape. The soft design was attractive but not distinctive. The 5th-generation looks about as different as a vehicle redesign can, and it has been transformed from a conventional SUV into a head-turner. Land Rovers don't even get this much attention, frankly. Everything about the new Santa Fe looks vastly different from its predecessor, most notably the unapologetically boxy shape. 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe — Source: Hyundai The Santa Fe's styling cues are in line with the boxy shape: there are H-shaped LED signature lighting in front and back, a rectangular grille on a vertical front fascia, and an upright greenhouse with plenty of blocky windows. The new Santa Fe also gets crisp body lines, large squared-off wheel arches, and a huge liftgate that provides a terrace-like rear cargo section for a lounge-like atmosphere. The Santa Fe no longer blends in with the crowd. Instead, it makes just about every other competitor fade into the shadows. 2026 Honda Passport 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport — Source: Honda Ever since its second-generation debut in 2019, the midsize Honda Passport has looked a bit minivan-like, but for 2026, the Passport has gone properly boxy and stands out in the process. Even boxier than its Pilot sibling, the redesigned Passport ditches its rounded corners for a tougher, more angular shape that clearly signals its off-road ambitions. The Passport gets a flatter hood, a more vertical front end, and a wider stance that fits well with the more capable TrailSport trim. 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport — Source: Honda TrailSport models add off-road suspension tuning, all-terrain tires, steel skid plates, and a subtle lift for extra ground clearance. The 2026 Passport's newfound looks are consistent with its more capable TrailSport trim. The boxier design allows for increased cargo capacity, now offering over 100 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded, way up from the 77.7 cubic feet in the second-generation Passport. It has shed its minivan appearance completely, and boxy might just be here to stay. 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser — Source: Toyota Toyota was certainly baking something during the Toyota Land Cruiser's hiatus between 2021 and 2024. The formerly V8-powered off-road luxo-barge was replaced by a less-expensive but still tremendously off-road capable version with a fresh, boxy design last year, marking a return to form reminiscent of the F60 Land Cruiser from the '80s and '90s. and built to conquer harsh terrain. The new Land Cruiser uses Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform and features a retro-modern design with upright pillars, square fenders, and round LED headlights that evoke the legendary FJ40. The grille is simple and functional, with prominent 'TOYOTA' lettering that leaves no doubt about its heritage. Nothing about the new Land Cruiser carries over from the last one, and that's a good thing. It had morphed into an overpriced and nondistinctive SUV, and the poor sales figures were clear evidence that Toyota needed to make a change if it wanted to bring the Land Cruiser back. On the new model, the boxy body, squarish-fender trim, eggcrate grille, and upright greenhouse all make for a rough-and-ready look. The design finally exhibits the rugged underpinnings and components, and the Land Cruiser has returned to its former glory. 2026 Hyundai Palisade 2026 Hyundai Palisade — Source: Hyundai It seems the Santa Fe's market success gave cause for Hyundai to apply the same thinking to its flagship SUV. The second-generation Palisade is more refined in its appearance than the Santa Fe, and it applies the square look a bit differently. The fenders receive boxy creasing that's more understated, and the stacked DRLs and larger grille are more upscale in their appearance. 2026 Hyundai Palisade — Source: Hyundai The look is more cohesive than the first-generation Palisade. Hyundai never quite figured out what kind of front fascia and grille looked right, and the refresh made improvements but added more complexity at the same time. The new Palisade also adds a modicum of cargo space to its already spacious interior, and there's more rear legroom thanks to a longer wheelbase. Its new, more premium look should also draw customers away from pricier brands. Final thoughts These four SUVs prove that going boxy isn't just a style statement; it's a functional choice that pays dividends in interior space, visibility, off-road capability, and presence. The return of square proportions helps the Santa Fe, Passport, Land Cruiser, and Palisade stand out on the road (and off, as the case may be) while offering practical benefits that curvier designs can't provide. Japan tariff negotiator held "in-depth" talks with Lutnick, Japan government says
TOKYO, July 5 (Reuters) - Japan's tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa held "in-depth exchanges" over the phone with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday and Saturday, the Japanese government said. A pause on a 24% reciprocal tariff on imports from Japan expires next week. The Japanese government also said in a statement that it intends to continue actively coordinating with the U.S. side on the matter.
