Huawei's New Earbuds Offer Active Noise Cancellation Despite Open Ear Design

Huawei's latest earbuds, the FreeBuds 6, continues the unique design of the FreeBuds 5, but comes in a sleeker form. These earbuds, weighing just 4.5g per bud, are so sleek and curvy that I've forgotten they were in my ears a couple of times during the past two weeks of use.
The FreeBuds 6 come in an egg-shaped case that can charge the earbuds seven times over (making for a total listening time of around 36 hours, as the earbuds can play for about five-plus hours each charge). The earbuds bring improved audio with four-magnet dynamic unit and dual drivers that deliver crisp highs up to 48 kHz and deep bass down to 14 Hz.
However, you must be using a recent Huawei flagship phone to achieve full 48 kHZ and lossless L2HC 4.0 audio. From my testing, audio quality sounded excellent when paired with the Huawei Mate XT. The 11mm driver produces satisfying oomph during hip hop tracks. When paired to a non-Huawei phone, audio quality still sounds good, but has a subtle loss of depth.

Open-ear earbuds -- meaning buds with a tip that does not entirely seal off the ear canal -- are not supposed to be able to offer strong active noise cancellation. But the FreeBuds 6, manages to do that thanks to a clever AI-driven software algorithm that uses its microphones to identify ambient noise around the wearer and then actively mutes the sound.
I must say the ANC isn't quite as strong as the Apple AirPods 4, but it's more than enough to silence loud talkers at cafes or public transport.
The fit is comfortable.
One downside of the FreeBuds 6's curvy design is it's a bit hard for my fingers to find the touch sensitive panel to control music playback. On other earbuds, including Huawei's Pro series earbuds, there is a clear groove to tap or long-press. Here, I find myself often tapping to no avail, just to realize I've tapped on the wrong portion of the earbuds.
The FreeBuds 6 are curvy for comfort, but hard to hold and control sometimes.
The FreeBuds 6 can also pair to two devices at the same time, a feature that comes in handy as I often switch between devices. Priced at around $150, the FreeBuds 6 are premium earbuds with an acceptable price tag. However, I do think those who can splurge a bit more are better off buying Huawei's FreeBuds Pro buds for superior sound, ANC, and controls.

China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday that the country has become second only in the world to start human trials of its advanced invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. The trial involves a 37-year-old man who lost all four limbs in a high-voltage electrical accident over ten years ago. In March, researchers implanted a coin-sized device and electrodes into his brain. Within weeks, the subject was able to control a cursor on a screen, allowing him to play chess, use a computer, and even game with near-normal skill, according to the CCTV report. Starting this year, the team will launch small-scale trials involving patients with paralysis or ALS, with plans to expand to as many as 40 participants by 2026. The effort is being led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' (CAS) Centre for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, alongside Huashan Hospital at Fudan University in Shanghai and several industry partners, the South China Morning Post detailed. The deep brain stimulation electrode implanted in the patient is the smallest and most flexible of its kind in the world, Chinese media added. Created by the CAS research center, the electrode measures roughly 1/100th the width of a human hair and about one-fifth the thickness of Neuralink's electrodes, explained Zhao Zhengtao, a professor at the academy. Zhao also noted in a statement released by the CAS that the electrode's exceptional flexibility enables it to bend with the subtle movements of neurons sliding past one another. The design caused minimal disruption to surrounding tissue, with the patient's neurons barely affected by the implantation. Each electrode tip contains 32 sensors that capture brain signals, enabling long-term coexistence with brain tissue without triggering immune rejection. Before reaching human trials, the technology underwent extensive testing on mice and macaques to evaluate its safety, flexibility, and effectiveness. The implant measures 26mm (1 inch) in diameter and is 6mm thick. The implantation procedure took less than 30 minutes to complete. Surgeons thinned a coin-sized section of the skull above the motor cortex, creating a 5mm opening to insert the electrode. Before the operation, the surgical team used advanced scans to create a detailed 3D map of the patient's brain, allowing for precise planning. During the surgery, real-time navigation technology guided the team to place the electrode with millimeter-level accuracy, ensuring optimal positioning. In the coming months, the team will work closely with the patient to train him in controlling robotic arms, enabling him to perform practical tasks such as grasping and manipulating objects in everyday life. Future phases of the trial may involve more advanced tasks, such as steering complex devices like robotic dogs and embodied AI agents. Beyond its current use, the report emphasized that this technology holds promise for a range of medical applications and offers new treatment options for debilitating neurological disorders such as stroke, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers have discovered how to create self-healing electrodes for use in producing green hydrogen without relying on precious metals or complex catalyst manufacturing processes. The team from Seoul National University College of Engineering released a study detailing its findings, which could help accelerate global decarbonization efforts and reduce reliance on precious metal-based catalysts, according to a TechXplore report. Water electrolysis is a process that uses electricity to produce green hydrogen, a next-gen fuel that could help the world meet its climate goals. Hydrogen is a light, storable, and energy-dense fuel that doesn't produce direct pollutants or planet-warming emissions, just water vapor. While many production methods employ dirty fuels to generate hydrogen — negating the low-carbon impact — other operations use solar power and renewable energy sources to power hydrogen creation. Electrolysis is one of the more eco-friendly methods being championed across the globe and is listed as one of Korea's 12 national strategic technologies, according to the TechXplore report. However, current systems require surface coatings of highly active catalyst layers that degrade over time, creating a stumbling block for advancing the technology. In addition, China has been tightening its grip on the majority of the world's rare earth material supplies. In the electrochemical activation method described in the report, researchers were able to produce hydrogen with high efficiency for extended periods using just commercial nickel electrodes. Testing revealed that by using the EA method with uncoated Ni electrodes, the team was able to match the hydrogen production efficiency of high-performance Ni-Fe oxyhydroxide catalysts. Giving the electrode a brief "rest" is essential to the new technique. By applying a weak reducing voltage to the Ni electrode for short periods, small amounts of Fe that dissolved in the electrolyte materials reattach to the electrode's surface. These Fe ions bond to the Ni to create a highly active oxygen evolution catalyst layer, which, through repeated cycles, becomes a self-healing system, the report explained. The technology could potentially be applied to other green hydrogen production methods to further improve efficiency, extend the operational life cycle, and lower costs. Some green hydrogen systems rely on sustainable solar or wind power for their processes, with potable water as the byproduct in one method currently under development by Cornell University researchers. As more innovations are discovered, the large-scale commercialization of green hydrogen production inches closer to becoming a more viable, sustainable energy source. "Hydrogen is today enjoying unprecedented momentum," Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, said.
