Ahead of Tuesday's protest call, a midnight crackdown on Punjab farmers' leaders; Jagjit Singh Dallewal under house arrest
Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a key face of the ongoing farmers' agitation, was among the prominent leaders placed under house arrest at around 4 am at his house in the Dallewal village in the Faridkot district.
'This is a midnight assault on democracy. Even now, I can barely walk, and yet they have confined me to my home. All we had announced was a one-day peaceful protest outside the Shambhu police station. People must now rise and speak out, or they will silence all our voices,' said Dallewal, visibly weak after a recent prolonged hunger strike.
The police action was not limited to Dallewal. Multiple leaders across Punjab were either detained or placed under house arrest in a sweeping move that has drawn sharp criticism from various farmer organisations.
While leaders like Baldev Singh Sirsa were also confined to their homes, others like Sukhjeet Singh Hardo Jhande, Kulwinder Singh Panjola, Hardev Singh Chitti, Gurpreet Singh Cheena, Shera Athwal, and Harvinder Singh Masaania were taken into custody and lodged at different police stations, including Batala, Ropar, Dorangla, and Sekhwan, said KMM leader Sukhdev Singh Bhojraj.
The arrests are being seen as a pre-emptive measure by the authorities fearing a large-scale gathering at Shambhu, where KMM and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) staged a 36-day dharna from February 13, 2024, to March 19, 2025, demanding, a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) among other things. That protest was forcibly cleared on March 19 when several top leaders were returning from talks with the Centre and the Punjab Government, and were arrested en route from Mohali.
Dallewal alleged, 'During the March 19 crackdown at Shambhu and Khanauri borders, the police misbehaved with farmer leaders and displaced tractors, trolleys, and personal belongings. Some items were later recovered from the houses of influential people connected to the ruling government, including a police employee. We demanded action, but nothing was done. Instead, they're now arresting us for demanding justice.'
In a fresh escalation, the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) Sunday night gave a call for a rail roko protest at the Devidaspura Railway Station on the main Amritsar- Delhi line beginning May 7.
The protest is against alleged forced land acquisition for the Bharatmala highway project in Amritsar without adequate compensation. KMSC coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher warned that the protest may spread to more stations from May 8 onwards, including Basti Tenkan Wali at Ferozepur, if the issue remains unresolved.
Farmer leaders have urged all like-minded organisations and the public to unite against what they termed the Punjab Government's 'diktat to silence dissent.'

Amritsar: Tarsem Singh , father of Amritpal Singh , has accused a senior police officer of mistreating the family and using abusive language during the recent court appearance of the jailed MP's colleagues here. Post Op Sindoor: As Pak works channels to create ‘spy network', Punjab Police leads dismantling efforts
A series of arrests — from Punjab and Haryana to Rajasthan and Uttarakhand — in two months following Operation Sindoor has once again put in focus the efforts being made by the Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI to gather information critical to India's national security by establishing new espionage networks while targeting serving military personnel and civilians working in defence establishments. A senior Punjab Police officer who has been dealing with countering ISI's agenda told The Indian Express that an increased tempo of ISI activity in Punjab has been noticed during and after Operation Sindoor. The Punjab Police has in the recent past has busted several modules and arrested several persons who it believes were involved in espionage at Pakistan's behest. 'The ISI has established extensive espionage network in India by exploiting financial hardships, ideological leanings, personal vulnerabilities, and impersonating as Indian entities. Honey-trapping remains a key tactic, with operatives leveraging personal or intimate relationships to coerce targets into sharing sensitive intelligence,' said a senior intelligence officer of Punjab Police. The officer added that 'recruits' are tasked with gathering critical information on troop movements, strategic sites, and border deployments, with payments routed through hawala channels and encrypted apps to maintain secrecy. 'Punjab Police, working in coordination with central agencies, have proactively dismantled these deeply entrenched networks over the years, exposing the ISI's systematic efforts to destabilize India's security and reaffirming an unwavering commitment to national integrity,' said DGP Gaurav Yadav. He added that in view of the recent developments, Punjab Police intensified its efforts to identify and bust Pakistani espionage networks spread across India. In this regard, he added, several suspects from different states came to notice for being connected with Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs) through encrypted communication platforms. Some of the PIOs have been found to be working in close association with terrorist groups in Pakistan. Subsequently, details of these individuals were shared with police in respective states and central agencies, leading to dismantling of a wide espionage network. In May and June, Punjab Police identified such espionage networks operating in state that led to arrest of several individuals in seven different cases. Among the individuals who have been arrested across various states in connection with Pakistan's ISI-backed espionage and propaganda activities are Jyoti Malhotra, alias Jyoti Rani, a YouTuber from Hisar in Haryana, Nauman Ilahi, a resident of Kairana in Uttar Pradesh; Devinder Singh from Kaithal, Haryana, Maulvi Qasim and his brother Asim from Rajasthan, Abhishek Bhardwaj from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, Suraj Masih and Phalaksher Masih from Ajnala; Rakib from Uttarakhand, Sukhpreet Singh and Karanbir Singh from Gurdaspur, Harpreet Singh, alias Pittu, alias Happy from Amritsar Jail; Gazala and Yameen Mohd from Malerkotla; Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan from Tarn Taran and Jasbir Singh, a YouTuber from Ropar in Punjab. Apart from these, two Army jawans have also been arrested for passing on information to Pakistan. Devinder Singh was arrested on July 14 from a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district for allegedly leaking classified defense information to the ISI. He was arrested following the interrogation of Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopy Foji, a jawan serving in the Sikh Regiment who was arrested on June 21 from Amritsar for allegedly sharing sensitive military information with ISI operatives. 'These individuals were found to be involved in various activities such as sharing sensitive information, establishing contacts with PIOs, receiving payments for intelligence sharing, and assisting in anti-national logistics and communication,' a Punjab Police officer said. Another officer said that investigations initiated over these months have uncovered attempts by ISI to target Indian nationals — particularly social media influencers and content creators — under the false pretense of cultural diplomacy and digital peace initiatives. Individuals were lured through well-orchestrated outreach, aiming to manipulate online narratives and mislead public opinion in favor of anti-national agendas. Punjab Police investigations have also revealed that this network sought to exploit the popularity and credibility of Indian digital voices to push pro-Pakistan narratives and subtly influence public sentiment within India. These efforts are part of a broader psychological campaign aimed at undermining national unity and eroding institutional trust. 'The Punjab Police, through its vigilant monitoring and robust intelligence-sharing mechanisms, has contributed significantly to the identification and disruption of these networks,' says the officer handling investigations into ISI activities. Arrests made across different parts of the country have directly stemmed from intelligence inputs and coordinated action, reflecting the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation, said an officer.

Cong MP says jailed gangster threatening to kill son, urges LS Speaker to summon Punjab DGP
Punjab Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa Friday alleged that jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria has threatened to kill his son. The Gurdaspur MP also met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and urged him to summon Punjab Police chief and senior superintendent of police, Batala, alleging that the threats to his son was an attempt to muzzle him and to prevent him from attending Parliament. 'Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuriya has threatened to kill my son. One of my associates met my son and within one hour of leaving, he was fired upon today,' Randhawa said in a post on X. Speaking to The Indian Express, Randhawa said that on Friday morning, his associate Parminder Singh from Fatehgarh Churian and some other party supporters had come to meet his son at his office at 10 am Thursday. A hoto of the meeting was posted online. 'An hour later, shots were fired at Parminder's turban shop (in which no one was injured),' Randhawa said, adding he has brought the matter to the notice of the Punjab DGP. 'After the firing incident, on Thursday evening, one person repeatedly wrote objectionable comments on my son's social media post,' the MP said. Randhawa, who is in Delhi for the ongoing Parliament session, added, 'No gangster can shake me. Threats did not deter us even during terrorism days. We are not scared of threats'. He further hit out at the Punjab government, saying, 'Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and (AAP national convenor) Arvind Kejriwal have turned Punjab into a gangster's paradise where law and order has totally collapsed.' Bhagwanpuria, a dreaded gangster with over 128 criminal cases, including murder, extortion, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking, was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the PIT-NDPS Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail in March this year. Linked to the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala and associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Bhagwanpuria leads a syndicate known for its extensive criminal activities across Punjab and beyond. The incident follows a history of tension between Randhawa and Baghawanpuria. Randhawa had previously accused Bhagwanpuria of influencing voters in Dera Baba Nanak during elections, including the November 2024 Assembly bypoll, where he alleged the gangster's family was intimidating locals to support AAP candidates. Conversely, Bhagwanpuria's relatives have accused Randhawa and his son of involvement in the June 2025 murder of the gangster's mother, Harjit Kaur, and cousin, Karanvir Singh, in a gang-related attack by the rival Davinder Bambiha gang in Batala. Randhawa has denied these claims, calling them conspiratorial. Randhawa said a MLA of ruling AAP said 'killing of Bhagwanpuria's mother was not a murder, but a political murder. The police should have taken his statement and questioned him about how it was a political murder'. He said the Punjab Police has done nothing about the threats issued to him and his son by Bhagwanpuria. 'I spoke to the DGP and he assured me that he will look into the matter. But what can he do? These gangsters have police protection,' he said. Continuing to target CM Mann, who holds the home portfolio, Randhawa accused the Punjab Police of going soft on Bhagwanpuria. 'He is a known drug smuggler. Why has no action been taken against his properties by the Punjab Police under NDPS Act,' he asked in apparent reference to properties of alleged drug smugglers being demolished by the state police under AAP government's Yudh Nasheyan Virudh drive. He claimed that most of the dreaded gangsters fall under the jurisdiction Batala police, but bardly any action has been taken. 'I have given repeated complaints to the then DIG Border Range Satinder Singh and to SSP Sohail Quasim Mir regarding a DSP and SHO in Dera Baba Nanak who are hand in glove with gangsters. If I am wrong, then police should contradict me. But they are silent and doing nothing,' he said. Randhawa, who along with party MPs Charanjit Singh Channi, Gurjit Singh Aujla and Amar Singh met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, said that they MPs apprised the Speaker about the threats made to his son. 'We demanded that the Lok Sabha Speaker should summon DGP Gaurav Yadav and Batala SSP Sohail Quasim Mir over the issue. The Speaker expressed concern and has asked us to given the details in writing,' said Randhawa. While the police are yet to issue an official statement on Randhawa's latest allegations, AAP spokesperson Neel Garg said the Congress leader should give full details of the incident so that the matter can be investigated. Garg claimed that everyone knows that gangsters got patronage under previous Congress governments. 'AAP government has zero tolerance towards gangsterism. We don't spare anyone who tries to disturb law and order in the state. Ever since AAP came to power, we have put several gangsters behind the bars and even attached their properties,' Garg said. Leader of Opposition in Punjab and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said, 'A jailed gangster openly threatening a senior INC leader, former Deputy CM, and sitting MP, this is not just a law and order failure, it's a damning indictment of the complete collapse of governance under Mann and Kejriwal.' 'If gangsters can intimidate elected representatives from behind bars, what chance does the common man in Punjab stand? Is this the 'badlav' AAP promised a state where criminals rule and citizens live in fear?' Bajwa said in a post on X. He alleged that the AAP government has reduced Punjab to a playground for gangsters, 'while Kejriwal remains busy marketing false narratives'. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said, 'A gangster has the audacity to threaten a senior INC leader…from inside the jail. Imagine the plight of the common people in Punjab. This reflects the complete collapse of law and order in Punjab'.
