Belagavi-Bengaluru Vande Bharat: Railway min repeats assurances, but no timeline yet

Time of India7 days ago
Belagavi: Yet again, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured that the Belagavi–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express will be launched "at the earliest," without offering a definite timeline, much to the growing frustration of Belagavi residents.
The minister repeated his assurance during the visit of Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi, along with Union minister Pralhad Joshi and minister of railways for the state V Somanna, in New Delhi on Thursday, to follow up on the long-pending demand for the train.
"The permission was already granted. We are waiting for the availability of coaches. The train will commence operations as soon as they are allocated," Vaishnaw stated, according to Kadadi.
However, repeated assurances without concrete action have left citizens disillusioned. On May 6, Union minister Pralhad Joshi officially announced the sanction of a dedicated Vande Bharat Express between Belagavi and Bengaluru after consultations with the railway minister. Since then, MPs including Jagadish Shettar and Iranna Kadadi have made multiple representations to the ministry, but each time the response has remained the same.

In Nov 2023, the Railways successfully conducted a trial run of an 8-coach Vande Bharat train between Dharwad and Belagavi. At the beginning of 2024, officials proposed extending the existing Bengaluru–Dharwad service to Belagavi. In May 2025, the railway ministry announced a dedicated train service instead, which was widely welcomed by the public.
Despite the excitement and public celebrations that followed, more than two months have passed since the announcement, and there is still no confirmed date for the launch.
In response to mounting public pressure, Belagavi's elected representatives continue to pursue the matter with the railway minister, but there no official guarantee or schedule has been given by the ministry.
Meanwhile, Kadadi said the railway minister also assured that the Belagavi–Miraj special train will be converted into a regular passenger service within a month. In a public statement, he added that Vaishnaw also promised to personally visit Ghataprabha railway station following complaints of poor-quality construction work there.

Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) Pushes R&D Frontiers with Industry and Start-up Focus

New Delhi: The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), established under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation Act of 2023, aims to transform India's innovation ecosystem by providing strategic direction across various scientific fields. In response to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha by Dr. K. Laxman, Narayana Koragappa, and Kesridevsinh Jhala, the Ministry of Science and Technology outlined the organisation's multifaceted vision and ongoing initiatives. Key objectives of the ANRF include fostering high-impact research in areas such as natural sciences, engineering, health, agriculture, and tech-enabled humanities. Furthermore, the foundation aims to strengthen connections among academia, industry, and policy to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. The Minister highlighted the government's support for private sector involvement in research and development, particularly through the MAHA-EV Mission, which is one of ANRF's flagship initiatives. This mission is designed to promote electric vehicle mobility, requiring a 10% industry contribution for each project and actively engaging start-ups and public sector units (PSUs). Furthermore, the newly approved Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme, with a budget of Rs 1 lakh crore, aims to provide long-term, low-interest financing to encourage private sector-led innovation. This initiative will benefit start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging sectors by providing growth and risk capital to enhance competitiveness and technological adoption. Under the Advanced Research Grant (ARG) program, scientists are invited to propose AI-based projects in physics, chemistry, and biology. These proposals will undergo ANRF's rigorous review process, potentially leading to significant scientific breakthroughs using artificial intelligence. Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting cutting-edge research and fostering inclusive growth through strategic funding and enabling mechanisms.

Bengaluru advocates' body seeks new Bar Councilrepresentative with English proficiency

Bengaluru: The Advocates' Association of Bengaluru (AAB) has written to the Bar Council of India (BCI) seeking a new Bar Council representative proficient in English for court ceremonies. The association passed a resolution demanding the removal of Karnataka Bar Council (KSBC) chairperson SS Mittala Kod due to his inadequate English language skills and his stance to stop welfare stamps for AAB. It highlighted that the KSBC chairperson's English pronunciation during the recent welcome ceremony for Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and other judges brought embarrassment to Karnataka. The July 22 letter noted his difficulty in properly pronouncing English words and errors in spelling the judges' names. The association requested either the appointment of a different representative or permission for Kod to speak in Kannada with translation support. They also mentioned their opposition to his decision on welfare stamps for AAB. In response, Kod told TOI that his responsibilities towards 1.3 lakh advocates leave him with no time for social media campaigns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo He stated that such campaigns violate the Advocates Act's ethical guidelines. Kod pointed out that despite multiple notices since 2008, including two during his leadership, AAB has not secured official recognition from KSBC. He noted that while most of the 196 bar associations obtained recognition, AAB remains among the few exceptions. The KSBC chairman wondered how the AAB president could use vehicle nameplates against high court regulations. He also questioned the president's commitment to implementing the health insurance scheme approved during the Basavaraj Bommai govt, despite claiming credit for the same.
