Here's Everything the Bay Area Won at the 2025 James Beard Awards
Sadly there were zero restaurant and chef finalists that made the jump onto Monday night's podium. Chefs Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski of The Anchovy Bar, The Progress, and State Bird Provisions were snubbed, one of many New York restaurants taking the win instead. Jacob Brown did not take home the gold on behalf of the Mission's Lazy Bear in the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category. Neither Richard Lee of Saison nor Kosuke Tada of Mijoté took home the Best Chef: California award. The final nominee Harbor House Inn lost in the Outstanding Hospitality category, too.
Still, the San Francisco Chronicle 's new-ish food critic Mackenzie Chung Fegan won the JBF's Emerging Voice award. Fegan is a San Francisco-grown writer whose family owns local mainstay Henry's Hunan. Most recently, her writing caused a stir for describing the now-infamous Kellergate wherein Thomas Keller pulled her aside at his French Laundry restaurant to lecture her on his qualms with today's food media.
Preeti Mistry won the Audio Programming award for their podcast Loading Dock Talks. Mistry's restaurant Juhu Beach Club was an Oakland smash hit before closing, landing the chef on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown in 2015. Their weekly conversation-style podcast features Bay Area chefs and cooks discussing their recipes, politics, and more. 'One of the goals of empire is to dehumanize certain groups of people,' Mistry said while accepting their award. 'That means trans folks. That means Palestinians. That means undocumented immigrants. Storytelling and oral history is such a part of humanizing people.'
Wine country restaurant hero Rogelio Garcia took home a win in the 'Professional and Restaurant' category for the JBF's Book Awards. His debut cookbook Convivir: Modern Mexican Cuisine in California's Wine Country, crowns his ascent through Northern California restaurants, including the now-closed SoMa restaurant Luce and his current job at Michelin star-holding Auro in Calistoga.
Since 1991, the James Beard Awards — the 'Oscars of food' — have remained one of the Big Deals in the food industry. The foundation canceled its programming in 2020 and 2021 after allegations of misbehavior and abuse toward nominees, in addition to a dearth of nominated and winning Black chefs in 2020. In 2022, the organization reorganized after internal audits. Unsurprisingly, given how food moves across the planet, the James Beard Awards' speeches this year skewed toward rejecting the anti-immigrant sentiment spreading throughout the United States.
Disclosure: Some Vox Media staff members are part of the voting body for the James Beard Awards. Eater is partnering with the James Beard Foundation to livestream the awards in 2025. 'Spider-Man' and 'Fantastic Four' Could Finally Team Up in New Marvel Crossover
Johnny Storm wanted it, and now Marvel fans may get it. Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm in the new Fantastic Four: First Steps movie, has expressed his desire to team up with Tom Holland's Spider-Man. During a prior interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Quinn responded to a question about the comic book friendship between Storm and Peter Parker. 'That pairing makes sense to me and I think he's brilliant and I'm up for it,' Quinn said. 'I think we'd have a laugh. I've never met Tom and I think he's brilliant; his Peter Parker is the best one ever, I think he's our best-ever Spider-Man, so why not? Let's do it, get it moving.' While Quinn's comments drew plenty of attention, Marvel president Kevin Feige's recent roundtable interview also brought mention of a potential Johnny Storm-Peter Parker collaboration. As ScreenRant revealed, Feige called it a "blue sky dream" but one that's now "in the realm of possibility." "We didn't do chemistry reads, but whenever we cast it is with that blue sky dream in mind of one day being able to do that," Feige said. "And that's a great example. That's one of the key relationships in Marvel comics is Johnny Storm and Peter Parker." "And we've never been able to come close to it before and now it is in the realm of possibility. That's exciting. That gets me up in the morning." Holland first portrayed Spider-Man in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. He was then featured in his own solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2017. Holland has played the iconic superhero role in several films, including the standalone Spider-Man movies and The Avengers. While there's nothing set in stone yet, Feige's comments point to a potential Quinn and Holland pairing in a Marvel film down the line, something that comic book fans and moviegoers alike would surely love to see.'Spider-Man' and 'Fantastic Four' Could Finally Team Up in New Marvel Crossover first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 24, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Diana Ross Reigns At 81, Packing The Hollywood Bowl
Diana Ross with daughter Rhonda Ross at a July 26 Hollywood Bowl concert. R. Daniel Foster Diana Ross rocked a packed Hollywood Bowl on July 25 and 26 with a setlist that spanned her six-decade career. The nights included intimate on-stage moments with her children and grandchildren, as well as a nod to Motown record label mogul Berry Gordy, the father of her eldest daughter, Rhonda Ross. On Saturday night, a nattily-dressed Gordy stood up from his box seat after Ross and her daughter called on him—just before Rhonda Ross performed songs, including one she wrote for her mother, 'Count on Me,' from Ross' 2021 album, Thank You. Ross's daughter, Tracee Ellis Ross, also joined her mother. Together they sang verses of 'Endless Love,' originally sung as a duet in 1981 by Diana Ross and the song's author, Lionel Richie. 'I have to get over my fear of singing with her on stage,' joked Ellis Ross, known for her roles on the TV shows Girlfriends and Black-ish. Diana Ross, in concert at the Hollywood Bowl, July 26, 2025. R. Daniel Foster Ross' daughter Chudney Ross and sons Evan Ross and Ross Naes also joined her on her stage, along with grandchildren Ziggy and Jagger, the children of Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross. True to her legendary status, Ross ruled the stage in top diva form, her voice sailing over the 17,500-seat venue even before she appeared on the stage: 'If you need me, call me. No matter where you are, no matter how far.' Of course, those are the opening lyrics to 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' her first number-one solo single, released in 1970. Ross appeared in a snow-white dress of cascading tulle that flowed upward to a lattice-work of sequins. A black tulle mantel flowed to either side. The queen had indeed arrived, and she got down to work delivering a setlist that started it all: her string of a dozen 1960s Motown hits sung as a member of The Supremes: 'Baby Love,' 'You Keep Me Hangin' On,' 'You Can't Hurry Love,' 'Come See About Me' and 'Stop! In The Name of Love,' among others. Diana Ross, performing during an encore at a Hollywood Bowl concert, July 26, 2025 R. Daniel Foster Ross appeared in three other dresses during the night—a red gown and billowy red feather cape, a bronze form-fitting dress with a lamé jacket, and, during her encore, a silvery crystal-encrusted gown paired with a wrap-around mantel of white tulle. Ross was backed by seven dancers clad in black, and a full roster of white-jacketed musicians. A white grand piano was set to one side of the stage. The black and white aesthetic broadcast the legend's timeless appeal, while the background visuals were a blast of vintage color, summing up the singer's image through the decades. A Legend In Her Ninth Decade Of Life 'You know I'm 81, right?' Ross said partway through her performance to an explosion of cheers. Diana Ross, friends, family and tour members pose for a photo after her July 26, 2025, Hollywood Bowl concert. R. Daniel Foster One of Ross' standout moments was 'Amazing Grace,' sung in a slower-than-usual tempo with undercurrents of gospel sound. Ross first hummed, vocalised, and finally sung the lyrics, delivering ethereal, heart-opening moments. She followed the contemplative song with her 1980 hit, 'Upside Down,' reinfusing the venue with electricity. Ross showcased moments from her film career, singing 'Don't Explain' from Lady Sings the Blues , the 1972 film about jazz singer Billie Holiday, which earned Ross an Academy Award nomination. She also sang 'Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To),' featured in her 1975 film Mahogany, telling the audience in a pre-performance video, 'Mahogany gave me the opportunity to design the clothes and the wardrobe for Tracy Chambers, the character I played.' Where To See Diana Ross Next After the Hollywood Bowl concerts, Ross will next perform at a cozier venue—the 2,500-seat outdoor amphitheater at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California (August 16). Ross' 2025 tour has been marked by huge crowds packed into vast arenas, paired with intimate venues like Saratoga's. After her performance at the winery, Ross performs in San Francisco the following night, and in St. Louis later in August. October concerts include those in Durham, Atlantic City, Newark, and Lynn, Massachusetts. Concluding the tour, November concerts will be held in Mashantucket, Connecticut and Lincoln, California. Daniel Foster Ross launched her 2025 tour in the United Kingdom, performing in Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and London. The July 2 London concert was held at the 20,000-seat O2 Arena. 'The United Kingdom holds sacred memories for me,' Ross wrote on her Facebook page. 'This tour in the UK has been a very special journey from inspiration to love.' Ross performed at Paris' Accor Arena on July 6, packing the 20,000-seat venue, and later in the month, at Athens' Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The 50,000-seat venue dates to 330-229 BCE. HENLEY-ON-THAMES, ENGLAND - JULY 09: Diana Ross performs on stage during day one of Henley Festival 2025 on July 09, 2025 in Henley-on-Thames, England. The outfit was embroidered in silver with the names of the singer's children and grandchildren. The Nigerian designer Mozie collaborated with Ross and her son Evan on the design. The Best-Charting Female Group In History The Supremes (left to right, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross) pose with their cameras as they arrive at London Airport. Bettmann Archive Diana Ross began her legendary career in 1959 as lead singer of The Primettes, joining forces with Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson—all three born out of Detroit's housing projects. The group debuted as The Supremes in 1961 after signing with Motown Records, with Ross instrumental in defining what was termed the 'Motown Sound.' She led the group to become the most commercially successful Motown group. During her Hollywood Bowl performance, she noted that she would have to 'be dragged off stage' before she would ever consider the option. That answer first came, however, shortly before her 81st birthday on March 26 of this year, when Ross told Brooklyn concert fans at the Kings Theatre, 'I'll never retire,' according to the New York Post .

'Fantastic Four's' Vanessa Kirby on Robert Downey Jr.: ‘The Most Incredible Human Being'
Star of the newly released film Fantastic Four: First Steps, Vanessa Kirby, seems to be enjoying her new role as Sue Storm. Thus far, as a part of the Marvel universe, Kirby has only had rave reviews for her castmates throughout the process. While Kirby and on-screen husband Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards) spent plenty of time bonding ahead of Fantastic Four: First Steps filming, she's also gushed about Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm). Now, Kirby and the rest of the Fantastic Four will make the leap over to filming Avengers: Doomsday, the highly anticipated 2026 film. In doing so, Kirby is set to work alongside longtime Marvel star Robert Downey Jr., who'll portray the villain Doctor Doom. While speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kirby had the highest of praise for Downey Jr., calling him an "incredible human being." "He's the most incredible human deep, kind," Kirby said of Downey. "He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies, you know, and a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's just doing the most amazing work." It's a strong review of the former Iron Man star, who's flipping to the "bad" side of Marvel for the newest addition to the Avengers franchise. It's also one that many have echoed about Downey Jr., who's been a beloved member of the series since initially portraying Iron Man. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, after being pushed back from its initial May release.'Fantastic Four's' Vanessa Kirby on Robert Downey Jr.: 'The Most Incredible Human Being' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 25, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
