Gaza War Prompts Jordan Boycott
TDT | Manama Jordan has withdrawn from its scheduled FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup match against Israel in a move widely seen as an expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The match was set to take place on Sunday in Switzerland as part of Group C action. However, following discussions between the Jordanian team's technical and administrative staff, the Jordan Basketball Federation (JBF) formally requested to withdraw from the fixture. FIBA confirmed the withdrawal in an official statement, awarding a 20-0 victory to Israel by default in line with tournament rules. The JBF said its decision aligned with the federation's core values and principles. While the statement did not explicitly reference Gaza, Jordanian media outlets and regional commentators made the connection clear. The move quickly gained traction across social media, where users across the Arab world praised Jordan's stance as one of moral clarity. Many described the decision as 'a moral victory greater than any sporting result,' with messages reinforcing that 'the Palestinian cause is indivisible.' Israel's basketball federation expressed disappointment with the outcome. President Amos Frishman said he believes sport should be a bridge between cultures, not a political battleground. The game will not be rescheduled.

A Boulder Italian Restaurant Just Won Its Fourth James Beard Award
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) Awards swept Chicago into a frenzy on Monday, June 16, at the Lyric Opera. Of all the Colorado contestants, upscale Italian restaurant Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder was named Outstanding Restaurant. This makes the restaurant's collective fourth James Beard Award. Though there was a lot of finalists headed into the final night of ceremony, 99 percent of the Colorado contestants lost out. That means Josh Niernberg for his work at Bin 707 Foodbar in Grand Junction did not win the Outstanding Chef award. In the Best New Restaurant, Denver's Alma Fonda Fina did not take home the gold, either. Further, Penelope Wong of Yuan Wonton did not win Best Chef: Mountain (CO, ID, MT, UT, WY), nor McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright for their drinks at Denver's Yacht Club. In Parker, Carolyn Nugent and Alen Ramos's creations at Poulette Bakeshop lost in the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker category. The awards just keep rolling in for Frasca, though. In 2008 Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson won the then-applicable Best Chef: Southwest for his work at the restaurant. In 2013 the JBF awarded Frasca in the Outstanding Wine Service category. And in 2019 the Boulder restaurant loved for its inventive, seasonal dishes won the Outstanding Service award. In 2023, that old tire company Michelin came to town and honored the business with a star and an Outstanding Service award. The night was a testament to the cuisine and work immigration brings to the United States. Only a few winners failed to mention the foodways that make their restaurants not just popular but possible. Here's Everything the Bay Area Won at the 2025 James Beard Awards
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) Awards took over Chicago on Monday, June 16. Restaurants and cooks across the country flocked to the Windy City to crown the new royalty of the food world. This year, the San Francisco Bay Area cleaned up, at least in respect to last year's showing. That is, Northern California punched well above its weight in the media categories, which were announced in a ceremony on Saturday, June 14. Sadly there were zero restaurant and chef finalists that made the jump onto Monday night's podium. Chefs Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski of The Anchovy Bar, The Progress, and State Bird Provisions were snubbed, one of many New York restaurants taking the win instead. Jacob Brown did not take home the gold on behalf of the Mission's Lazy Bear in the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category. Neither Richard Lee of Saison nor Kosuke Tada of Mijoté took home the Best Chef: California award. The final nominee Harbor House Inn lost in the Outstanding Hospitality category, too. Still, the San Francisco Chronicle 's new-ish food critic Mackenzie Chung Fegan won the JBF's Emerging Voice award. Fegan is a San Francisco-grown writer whose family owns local mainstay Henry's Hunan. Most recently, her writing caused a stir for describing the now-infamous Kellergate wherein Thomas Keller pulled her aside at his French Laundry restaurant to lecture her on his qualms with today's food media. Preeti Mistry won the Audio Programming award for their podcast Loading Dock Talks. Mistry's restaurant Juhu Beach Club was an Oakland smash hit before closing, landing the chef on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown in 2015. Their weekly conversation-style podcast features Bay Area chefs and cooks discussing their recipes, politics, and more. 'One of the goals of empire is to dehumanize certain groups of people,' Mistry said while accepting their award. 'That means trans folks. That means Palestinians. That means undocumented immigrants. Storytelling and oral history is such a part of humanizing people.' Wine country restaurant hero Rogelio Garcia took home a win in the 'Professional and Restaurant' category for the JBF's Book Awards. His debut cookbook Convivir: Modern Mexican Cuisine in California's Wine Country, crowns his ascent through Northern California restaurants, including the now-closed SoMa restaurant Luce and his current job at Michelin star-holding Auro in Calistoga. Since 1991, the James Beard Awards — the 'Oscars of food' — have remained one of the Big Deals in the food industry. The foundation canceled its programming in 2020 and 2021 after allegations of misbehavior and abuse toward nominees, in addition to a dearth of nominated and winning Black chefs in 2020. In 2022, the organization reorganized after internal audits. Unsurprisingly, given how food moves across the planet, the James Beard Awards' speeches this year skewed toward rejecting the anti-immigrant sentiment spreading throughout the United States. 2025 James Beard Awards Winners: The List So Far
Tonight, in a star-studded ceremony at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, the James Beard Foundation is announcing the winners of the 2025 James Beard Awards, considered the highest accolade for chefs and restaurateurs in America. This evening's Restaurant and Chef Awards follow Saturday's Media Awards hosted by Padma Lakshmi, which celebrated food media working in cookbooks, journalism, and television and audio. For this 35th-annual Restaurant and Chef Awards, Nyesha Harrington and Andrew Zimmern act as the ceremony hosts. Applications For James Beard Foundation's Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership Program Are Now Open
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is accepting applications for its annual Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership (WEL) program, according to a press release. The 11-week virtual program is designed to help U.S.-based female owners and co-owners with brick-and-mortar business in the food or beverage industries. By offering this educational, training and networking program, WEL provides business owners with the chance to excel and evolve as a leader and discover ways to optimize their business model, as well as identify improvements on internal systems and create best strategies for long-term growth. The Foundation's educational partner is Cornell University. Virtual sessions will be led by Cornell faculty in addition to JBF staff, industry leaders and other experts. WEL's goal is to address systemic issues that women business owners face in their professional journeys and provide tools, resources, and secure networks to guarantee success and more so to see an increase of women-owned businesses and leadership throughout the growing industry. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 21 years old and a woman or nonbinary individual. Applicants must have a minimum of $1 million in annual revenue and be committed to the mandatory attendance policy for each session. The application deadline is June 6 at 11:59 PM PT. Those who make the cut will be notified August 1. The program starts September 8. As the foundation continues to encourage Black women and other women of color to participate, a number of Black chefs and restaurants have received the prestigious James Beard Award, which recognizes ' the exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability and a culture' for all to succeed in. In 2024, Rashida Holmes of Bridgetown Roti in Los Angeles was named one of the Outstanding Chef semifinalists. The Caribbean-American pop-up restaurant is known for its vegan and protein pattie offerings.
