Chelsea's Mike Penders joins Strasbourg on loan

New York Times20 hours ago
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has joined sister club Strasbourg on loan for the season.
The Athletic reported on July 22 that Penders was set to join Strasbourg, alongside defender Mamadou Sarr, who arrived at Chelsea from the French side earlier this summer.
The Premier League side agreed a deal in advance to sign Penders from Genk last summer, with the 19-year-old joining up with his new side ahead of the Club World Cup campaign in the United States. He did not play a minute, acting as third choice behind Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.
Penders is expected to become Strasbourg's No 1 for the 2025-26 campaign, effectively replacing Djordje Petrovic, who spent last season on loan with Liam Rosenior's side from Chelsea before joining Bournemouth permanently earlier this month.
Penders, who stands at 6ft 7in (200cm), began last season as first choice for the Genk Under-21s, who play in the Belgian second tier, before becoming the first-team goalkeeper in January. He ended the season with 25 first-team appearances.
The Belgian has also represented his country at youth level, playing up to under-19s.

Strasbourg are also controlled by BlueCo, the holding company which owns Chelsea. FIFA rules permit only three players be loaned between clubs with such arrangements.
Rosenior's side will play Conference League football next season after finishing seventh in 2024-25. Petrovic was voted as their player of the season after keeping 10 clean sheets in 31 Ligue 1 appearances.

💥 Inter step up Lookman chase: Marotta meets Percassi today

Inter-Lookman, now or never. The words of Nerazzurri president Giuseppe Marotta leave no room for interpretation, we are in the final phase of the negotiation. Inter wants a definitive answer within 72 hours, to understand whether to proceed with the negotiation or, otherwise, change target. In Viale della Liberazione, there is positivity, both for the good relations between the two clubs and because - in fact - the distance between demand (50 million) and offer (43 + bonus) is really minimal. Today, in fact, DS Ausilio will break the wall of 40, after having received the okay from Oaktree. And this, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, is a good sign. Lookman, in fact, is not a future player who can be used to make a profit in a couple of seasons. At 28 years old, the Nigerian is in his "prime", has experience and has already decided a European final with three goals. The diktat of Oaktree, in short, seems to have changed: young people yes, but with exceptions if it's about strong and ready-to-win players. 💥 Arm wrestling to come? At this point, all that's left is to wait for the course of events. Inter does not have a plan B, because in their head they only have Lookman. Atalanta, on the other hand, as demonstrated a year ago with Koopmeiners, is a club that rarely gives discounts, especially to a rival. Two factors are in favor of the Nerazzurri: the player's will, who has never opened up to other destinations; the fact that the other suitors, Napoli and Atletico Madrid in the first place, have backed out. This morning Marotta will meet Luca Percassi, on the occasion of the League Council. There will be the Inter acceleration, which will have to be decisive. For now, the player's arm wrestling is excluded, an eventuality that Inter would also like to avoid in order not to damage the relationship with Dea. But we are in the decisive phase. 🤝 The agreement with Ademola Once Atalanta is convinced to part with their player, for Inter there should be no more obstacles. The agreement with Lookman, in fact, has already been found for some time, based on a 5-year contract at 4.5 million euros per season + bonuses. At this point, we are waiting for developments, which could arrive as early as today. And which, as stated by Marotta, will not develop beyond 72 hours, the limit within which the president wants an answer. If it is positive, there will be the decisive acceleration on Lookman. In case of a negative response, the search for a similar profile will begin. Inter, however, is convinced that it will not be necessary. It's a bit early – FA chief Mark Bullingham on Sarina Wiegman new contract talks

Mark Bullingham has hailed the 'incredible' leadership of England boss Sarina Wiegman and promised 'at an appropriate time' to discuss extending her stay as Lionesses head coach. Wiegman masterminded her third successive European Championship triumph with Sunday's penalty shoot-out success over Spain to ensure England retained the trophy they won for the first time in 2022. The Dutch coach is contracted to the Football Association until after the 2027 World Cup. FA chief executive Bullingham told BBC Sport: 'She's an incredible person, incredible coach and incredible leader. 'We're very lucky to have her, proud to have her as part of the team and obviously she will be working with us for the World Cup.' Pressed on when contract talks would take place, Bullingham said: 'It's a bit early for that. 'We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time. 'She is an incredible manager and we're delighted to be working with her, so that has to be up to her. We will have those conversations when they're ready to go.' Wiegman, 55, has been England head coach since 2021 and guided the team to two European Championship titles and a runners-up finish at the 2023 World Cup.

Wrexham eye Sheffield United's Wales striker Moore

Wales forward Kieffer Moore is among a number of players Wrexham are interested in, manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed. Moore, 32, joined Sheffield United on a three-year deal in July 2024 and scored five goals in 28 Championship appearances for the Blades last season. Wrexham, promoted back to the second tier of English football for the first time in 44 years, have been linked with the 49-times capped international. "Kieffer's under contract at Sheffield United. He's one of a number of players we've looked at over the summer," Parkinson said. "Like I said, the landscape changes in the transfer market very quickly from one week to the next. "We're looking at lots of options here and abroad." Wrexham have signed goalkeeper Danny Ward, forward Ryan Hardie, defender Liberato Cacace, midfielders George Thomason and Lewis O'Brien and forward Josh Windass during the close season. Parkinson said the club have had dialogue over the idea of signing Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, but it "had not gone further". The Wrexham boss is still hoping to add to his squad before their Championship opener at Southampton on Saturday, 9 August. "Obviously in an ideal world you want all your signers in prior to pre-season to work with," Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales. "But it just doesn't work like that. People sometimes say, why doesn't it? "It's just a variety of reasons - clubs don't want to sell players, competition for players, negotiations over transfer fee or wages. "Of course, ideally, we'd like to make a couple more additions. Is that going to happen before the start of the season? It's difficult to say. "But the most important thing is by the end of August we've got a squad in here which we feel can compete."
