Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña out lineup for second consecutive game

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston shortstop Jeremy Peña was held out of the lineup for a second straight game on Sunday but continues to make progress after leaving the Astros' win over the Cubs on Friday in the fifth inning because of rib soreness, manager Joe Espada said.
Peña was hit in the ribs by Cade Horton's pitch during the second inning of the Astros' 7-4 victory. Imaging done Friday did not reveal a fracture, and Peña has been able to swing a bat the last two days.
'It's just still pretty sore, so no need to rush to get him in there,' Espada said.
The Astros are off on Monday before starting a series in Colorado on Tuesday.
Peña played in the Astros' first 82 games of the season and batted .322 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI.

Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022

MADRID (AP) — Alexia Putellas doesn't have fond memories of the last Women's European Championship, when she tore a knee ligament on the eve of the tournament in England three years ago. Things are different now as Spain prepares for its campaign at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, with Putellas saying she's better than ever and ready to try to lead Spain to its first title in the competition. 'I'm not going to lie, it's a competition that I had in my sights after the injury I suffered just before the start of the last Euro,' she said. 'I've been preparing for this moment for a long time and I want to enjoy it.' The two-time world player of the year was coming off one of her most impressive seasons when she injured her left knee during a practice session just days before Spain's opener at Euro 2022. It kept her out of action for nearly a year and dealt a blow to Spain's chances in the tournament, where it was ousted by England in the quarterfinals. Putellas says she has improved a lot since then, even though other Spanish players such as Aitana Bonmatí — a two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself — have emerged as top stars. 'Without a doubt I'm a better Alexia,' she said. 'I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I've learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments.' Putellas has had another outstanding season and is again among the favorites for the world player of the year award. She thrived as Barcelona won the domestic treble and reached another Champions League final. 'The individual award is not something too important for me,' the 31-year-old Putellas said. 'But it would show that you've done something good and, from where I'm coming from — from the lowest of the lowest after the injury — it would give some value to the effort that it was put into the recovery. We'll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro.' Bonmatí won the last two world player of the year awards, and she is now the one enduring an ordeal as after falling ill with viral meningitis just a few days before Spain traveled to Switzerland for the tournament. Bonmatí was released from the hospital on Sunday to rejoin the national squad, but it still wasn't clear how much she would participate. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Spain will open its tournament Thursday against Portugal. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. The nation's best result in the European tournament was a semifinals appearance in 1997. Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup in 2023 and the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match. 'It's never easy to win a Euro,' Putellas said. 'We need to have maximum respect toward the other nations. There are great teams participating. But we have a lot of faith in our team, and if we give our best we will be that much closer to winning.' ___ AP soccer:

Al Hilal stuns Manchester City 4-3 in Club World Cup on Marcos Leonardo's extra-time goal

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Marcos Leonardo scored his second goal on a rebound in the 112th minute, and Al Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3 on Monday night, eliminating the Premier League power from the Club World Cup in the round of 16. In a back-and-forth thriller at Camping World Stadium, the Saudi Arabian club took the lead three times, including twice in extra time. Kalidou Koulibaly put Al Hilal ahead 3-2 in the 94th minute, but Phil Foden — who entered as a substitute four minutes earlier — equalized in the 104th. Leonardo finally put Man City away. Goalkeeper Ederson saved a header by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from inside the penalty box and the ball deflected to Leonardo, who redirected it with his right foot as he fell to the pitch near the left post. Al Hilal moves on to face Fluminense of Brazil, which took down another European power, Inter Milan, earlier Tuesday. Leonardo also scored in the 46th minute to even the match at 1-1. Bernardo Silvan opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Man City. Malcom put Al Hilal ahead in the 52nd, and Erling Haaland found the net in the 55th to make it 2-2. Key moment Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Manchester City nearly won it regulation in the final seconds of added time on a counterattack that was thwarted by a hard challenge. Referees did not call a penalty, and Man City coach Pep Guardiola ran onto the field to argue the decision after the whistle. Jays' Scherzer finds his ‘good stuff' in strong start against Yankees

TORONTO – Pitcher Max Scherzer's second start at Rogers Centre this season was far more successful than this first. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched five strong innings on Monday night as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 5-4. Scherzer struck out seven while allowing three hits and two runs on 71 pitches. He also did not walk a batter, and his fastball topped out at over 95 miles-per-hour. 'I thought I was on the ball better today,' said Scherzer post-game. 'I kind of made a little adjustment in-between starts and I felt like it got me in and really started dialing in pitches.' Scherzer was forced to leave his first start with the Blue Jays on March 29 after just 41 pitches due to a thumb issue, spending the next three months on the Injured List. Monday was just his third start of the season. 'I felt like I had a good fastball tonight,' he said, crediting the pitch for his success against a vaunted Yankees lineup. 'I was able to pitch with that and set up every other pitch and it allowed me to kind of navigate their lineup a little bit when I was in there. So, there's a lot of good.' This version of Scherzer appears to be the version the Blue Jays were expecting when they signed him to a one-year contract worth $15.5 million. 'It was evident with the way he started the game, that, yeah, that's the best version of Max that we've seen' said Blue Jays manager John Schneider following the game. 'That's who he is,' said Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'He's the type of person who comes here early every day, always focuses on the game, and gives you everything he's got.' Scherzer's return has come at an opportune time for the Blue Jays. With the club in the thick of a divisional race, Monday's victory leaves the Blue Jays just two games back of the Yankees for the American League East lead. The Blue Jays have gone 30-18 since May 8, earning the third-best winning percentage in the majors during that span while also ranking top-10 in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and OPS. 'Everybody's been doing their job,' said Guerrero Jr. 'Just helping each other. And we trust in each other a lot. So, we've been playing great as a team.' It was a total team effort for the Blue Jays on Monday. Guerrero Jr. drove home three runs with a single and double, while second baseman Davis Schneider finished 2-for-3 with a double and shortstop Ernie Clement went 2-for-5 with one RBI. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. With the lead down to one in the bottom of the ninth, closer Jeff Hoffman entered the game and pitched a scoreless frame to secure the victory and earn his 19th save of the year, ranking him third among American League pitchers. 'It felt like a very meaningful baseball game,' said Schneider. 'It is June. It'll be July tomorrow (Tuesday), and tomorrow's a big day for us as a team and as a country. I'm sure it'll be fun again tomorrow.' UP NEXT Right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6) starts for the Jays on Canada Day, while the visiting Yankees will hand the ball to left-hander Max Fried (10-2). This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 30, 2025.
