It is about changing lives, not just glamour: Sonu Sood on being a judge for Miss World 2025
Known for his philanthropic efforts, especially through the Sood Charity Foundation, he will also be honoured with a Humanitarian Award during the Miss World event for his contributions, including initiatives supporting breast cancer patients.
In a conversation with The Hindu, Mr. Sood shared his thoughts on judging the competition, his humanitarian ethos, and what the global pageant means for Telangana.
How does it feel to take on the role of being a judge in the grand finale?
It feels like a huge responsibility, but also an incredible honour. To be part of such a grand and meaningful platform is humbling. The event will bring together voices from 120 countries, and it is not just about physical beauty, it's about beauty with purpose. When I spoke to the Miss World team, I shared my experience of supporting breast cancer patients by sponsoring their surgeries. Judging a platform like Miss World goes far beyond glamour or how someone walks the ramp. What truly matters is how contestants give back to society, the kind of voice they carry, the journey they envision, and the lives they aim to change.
How have you seen the Miss World pageant evolve over the years?
It has evolved tremendously. Earlier, the focus may have been more on glamour, but today, it's about purpose and social impact. The awareness and intent have shifted. Now, it is about how you use your voice to create change, how you can influence thought and inspire action. As the competition has matured, so has the quality of participants. Many of them have gone on to excel, be it in cinema, philanthropy, or business, and that is what makes this platform so powerful and special.
How do you think hosting Miss World will benefit Hyderabad and Telangana?
When a global event like this is hosted, the entire world watches. Telangana is already doing remarkably well, and this is a chance for the state to showcase its warmth, hospitality, and cultural wealth. When delegates and visitors go back with beautiful memories, they become ambassadors for the state. It draws international attention and highlights how platforms like Miss World, through the lens of beauty with purpose, can bring about real change.

‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu' box office: Pawan Kalyan's film mints ₹9.25 crore on Day 3 after sharp drop in earnings
Telugu star Pawan Kalyan's historical epic, Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, hasn't had the opening fans of the star were hoping for. The film, released on Thursday, earned ₹9.25 crore on Saturday, bringing the total to ₹64.75 crore. According to Sacnilk, the film opened to ₹34.75 crore on Thursday, after minting ₹12.75 crore from preview shows on Wednesday. However, due to unfavourable reviews and calls for a boycott due to a political controversy, the film saw a 76.98 per cent drop in collections on Friday, earning only ₹8 crores. Trade reports suggest that Sunday (July 27) wouldn't be much different either. Directed by Jyothi Krishna and Krish Jagarlamudi, the historical action drama revolves around the titular character, Veera Mallu, a rebellious outlaw. Bobby Deol essays the role of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the antagonist in the movie. Niddhi Agerwal is the female lead. Anupam Kher, Jisshu Sengupta, Nargis Fakhri, M Nassar, Sunil, Raghu Babu, Subbaraju and Nora Fatehi are the other actors in the movie. The film features music by Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, with Manoj Paramahamsa serving as the cinematographer. Veteran Thota Tharani is the art director of the movie. Hari Hara Veera Mallu is produced by AM Rathnam under his Mega Sura Production banner. The Hindu's review of the film reads, 'The first half drags along, saved occasionally by M.M. Keeravani's music. While the story feels patchy, a couple of action scenes show Veera Mallu's knack for stealing diamonds and standing up for the oppressed. A wrestling sequence highlights Pawan Kalyan's martial arts background, and his past as a stunt choreographer adds value to the 18-minute pre-climax action stretch. But everything in between feels flat.'

I view it as both a form of praise and a hurdle; it signifies that you portrayed something so convincingly that audiences link you to it." Manushi Chillar On Working With Visionary Filmmakers She also emphasised the importance of working with directors who are unafraid to experiment with casting. According to her, such collaborations not only give actors the chance to break out of repetitive roles but also add fresh storytelling perspectives to cinema. Manushi added, 'However, I also think that genuine artistry is rooted in adaptability. To prevent being confined, one must actively pursue roles that challenge them. The only way to break free from this cycle is to work with directors who possess a distinct vision and are willing to reimagine casting. After all, directors are the creative minds behind the films."
