VinFast opens second domestic EV factory amid global expansion

Reuters3 days ago
HANOI, June 29 (Reuters) - Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast began production on Sunday at its second domestic factory, aiming to ramp up output of affordable mini urban models as its global expansion plans face delays.
The new facility, located in the central province of Ha Tinh, has an initial annual capacity of 200,000 units and spans 36 hectares (90 acres), the company said in a statement.
By comparison, VinFast's flagship factory in northern Haiphong is designed to reach a capacity of 950,000 units by next year.
VinFast, backed by Vietnam's largest conglomerate Vingroup (VIC.HM), opens new tab, has set ambitious goals to establish production plants in international markets, including the United States, India, and Indonesia. However, it has faced hurdles in its global expansion, including weaker demand and stiff competition.
The company announced last year that operations at its U.S. factory would be delayed until 2028. Its India assembly plant is expected to become operational next month.
"Once operational, the VinFast Ha Tinh factory will contribute to VinFast's goal of producing 1 million vehicles per year to meet the increasing demand of domestic and foreign markets," said Nguyen Viet Quang, Vingroup's CEO.
The EV maker has set a delivery target of 200,000 cars for 2025, having sold approximately 56,000 units in the first five months, primarily in its domestic market.
It reported a net loss of $712.4 million for the first quarter, less than the $1.3 billion loss in the previous quarter but 20% more than a year earlier. Revenue jumped 150% to $656.5 million over the same period.

Tesla Drops Killer Model 3 Lease Deal for July

View post: Nissan Sales Are Down, But These 3 Cheap Cars Are Flying Off the Lot Tesla Model 3 Lease deal for July If Tesla's mildly redesigned Model 3 has been on your shopping list for a while, the automaker's newest lease deal might make it more appealing for you. The lease deals vary depending on which model you choose and how much money you put down, but they seem to be nationwide. Always check Tesla's website yourself for potential personalized offers. The Model 3 Long Range RWD can be had for $349/month for 36 months with $3,000 down and 10,000 miles per year. The Long Range AWD model jumps to $549/month for 36 months with $3,000 down and 10,000 miles per year. Lastly, the Performance AWD has the highest cost, at $849/month for 36 months with $3,000 down and 10,000 miles per year. The down payments can be adjusted for lower monthly payments, but there are limits depending on the model you choose. Interested parties may also be eligible for the $7,500 Tesla incentive, along with a $1,000 off Military, First Responder, Teacher, and Student offer, or a $1,000 Tesla Credit and $1,000 cash from Lyft for verified Lyft drivers. Tesla Model 3 — Source: Tesla Would you rather have $0 down? Potential lessees who want to save money on the upfront costs can pay $0 at signing, with some adjustments to the monthly payment. We have estimated the monthly payments by spreading the amount at signing over the lease's term. Given the equal down payment, all models would carry an extra ~$83 per month. The Model 3 Long Range RWD would get a total estimated monthly payment of $432, the Long Range AWD would jump to $632, while the Performance AWD would increase to $932. The newest Model 3 was upgraded last year to a 79.7 kWh lithium-ion battery that bestows the car with 286 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds in the single-motor RWD or 4.2 seconds in the dual-motor AWD. That former RWD setup will give you an EPA-estimated 363 miles of range, while the AWD drops down slightly to 346 miles. Charging speed is slightly lower in the AWD as well, with it adding up to 185 miles in 15 minutes compared to the RWD's 195 miles in 15 minutes. If power is your goal, though, you should opt for the Model 3 Performance. Its dual-motor AWD setup boasts a trim-topping 510 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. Its EPA-estimated range suffers heavily, however, dropping to 298 miles. Its charging abilities are also lacking compared to its siblings, adding up to 142 miles in 15 minutes. Other goodies, like sports seats and adaptive suspensions, are also included. 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance — Source: Tesla The 24 cu ft of cargo space is the same across all three models, with the cabin sporting a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen that controls infotainment and most vehicular functions, including shifting duties. No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay is available, putting the Model 3 at a heavy disadvantage compared to other EVs, but at least you can play games on the infotainment screen while you wait. The Model 3 Long Range RWD starts at $42,490, the Long Range AWD starts at $47,490, while the Performance AWD starts at $54,990. Car of the Year 2025: Skoda Elroq

It's always tough to choose an overall winner for our Car of the Year prize, but 2025 caused longer debates among the Auto Express judging team than most. There were several stars we could have chosen this year; a pair of deeply desirable Renaults in the form of the retro Renault 4 and Renault 5, plus the cheerful and keenly priced Fiat Grande Panda, were all strongly in the running during our deliberations. Advertisement - Article continues below In the end, however, we chose the car which, try as we might, we struggled to find any obvious faults with – and that all-round strength sealed its position: the Auto Express New Car of the Year winner for 2025 is the Skoda Elroq. Skoda has regularly bagged various category wins at our annual awards, but this is the first time that the Czech brand has scooped the overall award since the Octavia took the prize in 2020. And if the Octavia has long been the car that has played more strongly to the brand's virtues than any other model in its line-up, the Elroq has now inherited the baton from its rangemate for the all-electric age. Everything we've come to expect and love from a Skoda is right here, with value for money at the forefront of everything it does. This is an electric car that starts from not much over £30,000, yet feels like a car that's sized a class above most alternatives at that price point. Step up the trim levels and models with more range become available; as many as 355 miles (WLTP) are on offer, but still at competitive prices. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Yet without genuine ability elsewhere, value for money isn't enough. The good news for the Elroq is that there's loads more to recommend. The cabin is both beautifully finished and incredibly spacious, making it an ideal family car, and everyone aboard will approve of its comfort, refinement and safety, too. Skoda's in-car tech is better than ever, while equipment levels are generous throughout. Then there are the powertrains, which offer plenty of smoothness and performance – there's even a hot vRS option, too. Advertisement - Article continues below If Skoda wanted a model to showcase what its brand is all about, the Elroq shouts those qualities louder than any other. It's as close to faultless as a family car can be, and that's why it's a deserving winner of our 2025 Car of the Year Award. 'Winning Car of the Year means a lot to all of us at Skoda. I'm grateful for this recognition of the hard work, creativity, and care that goes into building a car we're truly proud of. We set out to create a car that people would love to drive on their daily explorations. To see it connect with drivers and experts alike is incredibly rewarding." - Klaus Zellmer, Skoda CEO. Mid-size Company Car of the Year 2025: Tesla Model 3

If stats matter above all else – and if you're choosing a company car, they're likely to play a big part in your decision – then the Tesla Model 3 is a car to choose with your head. Taking all emotion out of the equation sees the Model 3 take the Mid-size Company Car category for the second year running, still leaving its closest rivals reeling from the series of mid-life changes that saw it take control of this category in 2024. Advertisement - Article continues below Pick almost any metric – whether it be performance, range or charging speeds – and the Model 3 comes out at the top of its class, or at least incredibly close to it. Tesla even sought to move some of these specs further away from its rivals; a subtly reprofiled nose improved aerodynamic efficiency, allowing the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant to cover a WLTP-certified 436 miles between charges. And those charges will be quick too, because the Model 3 can charge at up to 250kW, and Tesla's Superchargers are still the UK's easiest and most effective charging network. However, it's some of the more subjective changes that explain just why we rate this facelifted model so highly. Thanks to a focus on refinement, the inclusion of uprated suspension bushings, extra soundproofing and even acoustic glass make this updated car significantly quieter than early Model 3s – and as a result, even better on the sort of motorway journeys that many of these cars will spend much of their time doing. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Finally, thanks to competitive list prices, Benefit-in-Kind tax figures are very cheap, too, so running costs are cheap all round. Stack all those figures up, and it makes for a very compelling proposition. Advertisement - Article continues below Configure your perfect Tesla Model 3 through our Find A Car service now. Tesla Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (£44,990) For company car drivers, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model is the one to have. There are more potent models higher up the range, but its performance is still excellent, while the official 436-mile range means that it'll go further on a single charge than any other Model 3, too. Company car buyers could do much worse than choose our first commended option in this category. In some ways, the BMW i4 even has our overall winner beaten; it's better to drive with superior ride and handling, and it feels like a more expensive product. If badge appeal matters more than pure numbers, then the i4 is still well worth a look. For those hunting competitive BiK costs without making the step to a full electric car, the Mercedes C 300 e is a company car driver's dream. A 71-mile electric-only range combines with the practicality of a 2.0-litre petrol engine to allow rapid refuelling on longer trips. All of this comes in one of the most convincing Mercedes models currently on sale; its quality, refinement and comfort all impress.
