Ludhiana: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders spearheading Punjab's anti-drug drive held strategy talks with police and district officials on Saturday, ahead of a key meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann scheduled for Monday.
The session, held at a resort on Ferozepur Road, saw AAP Ludhiana incharge Balbir Chaudhary and 'Nasha Mukti Morcha' zone incharge Sukhjit Singh review local progress under the 'Yudh Nashe Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign. Officials said the meeting was aimed at preparing a report for the CM on Ludhiana's enforcement and rehabilitation efforts. Chaudhary briefed attendees on local de-addiction and awareness initiatives, stressing continuous outreach to Punjab's youth.
Singh claimed growing public engagement with the anti-drug movement, but urged stronger collaboration between civil society and law enforcement to deepen impact.
"Coordination across the administration, police, and grassroots activists is key," Singh said, noting that Monday's meeting with Mann will evaluate government scheme effectiveness, propose de-addiction centre expansions, and discuss bolstering local policing capabilities.

The 'Yudh Nashe Virudh' campaign, launched by the Mann government shortly after AAP's 2022 electoral victory in Punjab, aims to tackle the state's long-standing drug problem through a mix of law enforcement, rehabilitation, and awareness.
The 'Nasha Mukti Morcha' (Drug-Free Front), AAP's volunteer wing in the campaign, has been organising rallies, community outreach events, and facilitating rehab referrals across districts.
Punjab has struggled with drug abuse for more than a decade, particularly in border areas where narcotics smuggling from across the Pakistan border remains a major challenge. In recent years, synthetic drugs and injectable opioids have worsened the crisis, prompting calls for a multi-pronged response. The AAP government has vowed to make anti-drug action a top priority. Its critics, however, argue that while raids and arrests have increased, structural issues such as underfunded rehab centres and weak inter-agency coordination persist.
Monday's CM-level review is expected to address many of these concerns and plot the next stage of the campaign.

Defence panel reviews women's role; Rajnath vows greater representation

The parliamentary consultative committee on defence, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, was briefed on representation of women in the armed forces. Mr. Singh spoke on the government's commitment to provide maximum representation to women in the forces. As per the data from Ministry of Defence (MoD), 13.4% women constitute IAF (Indian Air force) workforce — highest among all three services — while they comprise 6.85% of Army's workforce and 6% of the Navy's. In 2024, there were a total of 1735 women in the Army, 1614 in the Air Force and 674 in the Navy. In 2005, the figure was 767 for the Army, 154 for the Navy and 574 for the Air Force. 12 branches in the Army are open to women officers including combat. In the Navy, all branches are open for women officers except submarines. All branches of the Air force are open for women officers. On being asked about women's representation in the armed forces, a senior MoD official said that they are opening more and more branches for women in the armed forces for all categories. Women are eligible for various roles, including technical and non-technical positions, and can join through different entry schemes. Most of the defence training institutes and academies have been opened for women. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army, who led the Operation Sindoor briefing along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Air Force have become an inspiration for women aiming to join the armed forces. Another senior defence officer said that women in the armed forces are doing remarkably well and their number is only going to increase in future as the forces adopt a more gender neutral approach.

Tribals celebrate start of delayed road project in ASR district

Visakhapatnam: Days after TOI highlighted the delay in the launch of a road project despite an allocation of 11.63 crore, the ASR district administration commenced work on a 12-km stretch from Ballagaruvu to Tuniseebu on Monday. The launch sparked scenes of joy across 11 tribal villages in the region, where residents primarily from particularly vulnerable tribal groups broke into celebratory Dhimsa dance. Interestingly, deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan had laid the foundation stone for this road project back in December 2024. However, the work remained stalled for over seven months. The ttribal residents staged a unique horseback protest on July 25, from Madrebu to Dayarthi villages, against the delay. Protestors lamented that the delay left them isolated, with villagers forced to walk nearly 20 km to access the nearest ration depot. The lack of proper roads also hampered access to essential services, they said. Following TOI's coverage, the deputy CM's office directed the ASR district collector to expedite the project. In response, officials and contractors began work on Monday, deploying earthmovers to start laying the road. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More The launch event saw participation from panchayat raj deputy engineer Ravikumar, CPM district committee member K.
