The parliamentary consultative committee on defence, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, was briefed on representation of women in the armed forces.
Mr. Singh spoke on the government's commitment to provide maximum representation to women in the forces.
As per the data from Ministry of Defence (MoD), 13.4% women constitute IAF (Indian Air force) workforce — highest among all three services — while they comprise 6.85% of Army's workforce and 6% of the Navy's.
In 2024, there were a total of 1735 women in the Army, 1614 in the Air Force and 674 in the Navy. In 2005, the figure was 767 for the Army, 154 for the Navy and 574 for the Air Force.
12 branches in the Army are open to women officers including combat. In the Navy, all branches are open for women officers except submarines. All branches of the Air force are open for women officers.
On being asked about women's representation in the armed forces, a senior MoD official said that they are opening more and more branches for women in the armed forces for all categories. Women are eligible for various roles, including technical and non-technical positions, and can join through different entry schemes. Most of the defence training institutes and academies have been opened for women.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army, who led the Operation Sindoor briefing along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Air Force have become an inspiration for women aiming to join the armed forces.
Another senior defence officer said that women in the armed forces are doing remarkably well and their number is only going to increase in future as the forces adopt a more gender neutral approach.

‘Ek Chutki Sindoor Ki Kimat…': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's ‘Bollywood' Dig At Jaya Bachchan

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta criticised Jaya Bachchan for questioning Operation Sindoor's name, India's response to the Pahalgam attack. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday took a sarcastic jibe at Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan for questioning the naming of Operation Sindoor– India's retaliatory strikes on Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. While speaking during a debate in the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, CM Gupta responded to Bachchan, saying, 'She asked why the operation was named Sindoor. I will answer her with a filmy dialogue – '' Ek chutki Sindoor ki kimat aap kya jano Jaya Madam? Aap toh filmon ki dunya jaanti hai, desh ki sachchai nahi ' (You don't know the value of a pinch of vermilion Jaya madam. You know about films, not the reality of the country.)" जिन्होंने 'ऑपरेशन सिंदूर' पर बहुत सारे प्रश्न उठाए, उनके लिए काका हाथरसी ने एक कविता लिखी है —नाम और रूप का भेद। #OperationSindoor — Rekha Gupta (@gupta_rekha) August 4, 2025 She further launched a scathing attack on the opposition parties, alleging that they support anti-national elements and do not love the country. 'These people do not love Bharat but love anti-national forces because they see their own reflection in them. They have named themselves 'INDIA', but when they speak, it feels like they are spokespersons for Pakistan." She further alleged that members of the Opposition had questioned the credibility of Operation Sindoor even in the Lok Sabha. 'They do not trust their own Army, their own Prime Minister, but they trust foreign countries," she charged. Gupta also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the success of the military response following the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Operation Sindoor was a befitting reply to Pakistan after the attack in Pahalgam, where many women lost their loved ones," Gupta said. 'Prime Minister Modi played a huge role in protecting the dignity of our sisters," she added. She paid tribute to the courage and commitment of the armed forces and said that under PM Modi's leadership, India has found a protector who acts like a 'courageous father, a compassionate brother, and a resolute national leader". What Jaya Bachchan Said? The Samajwadi Party MP had triggered a row after questioning the naming of Operation Sindoor. She argued that the operation's name was insensitive, as the attack 'destroyed the sindoor" of many women who lost their husbands in the April 22 attack. 'I would congratulate you on the writers you have hired. You give grand names. Why did you name it 'Sindoor'? Sindoor toh ujad gaya (sindoor was destroyed), the wives of those who were killed," she had said. Her comments were met with interruptions from members of the ruling party. Pahalgam Terror Attack In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 04, 2025, 23:40 IST News politics 'Ek Chutki Sindoor Ki Kimat…': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's 'Bollywood' Dig At Jaya Bachchan Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. "What Happened To Report?" Top Court To Manipur On Biren Singh's Alleged "Audio Clip"

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the state government for not placing on record a fresh forensic report on the authenticity of leaked audio clips alleging role of former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh in the ethnic violence despite its directions. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma referred to a previous order and asked the state, "What happened to the forensic report? That should have come at least. This order was passed in May 2025. Three months have passed. By now, the forensic report laboratory must have given you a report. At least tell us whether the report has come or it's still in the pipeline." When the state's counsel said the FSL report had not come, the bench asked further, "How long does it take FSL to give a definite report on the analysis of the voice? We will pass it over. This can't go endlessly." The matter could not reach the hearing again during the day. On May 5, a bench headed by former CJI Sanjiv Khanna examined a forensic report on authenticity of leaked audio clips alleging role of former Manipur CM and asked the state government to file a fresh report on the probe. It opened the sealed cover report of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) submitted by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and asked him to seek instructions from the state officers on the investigation. "The FSL report has been filed. We need a month to probe it," the law officer said. Mehta further said the Manipur High Court could hear the matter as "peace is prevailing now and the probe can go on". After perusing the report, the CJI asked the law officer that he would have to speak to the officers about it. The bench then posted the matter for a fresh report in the week of July 21. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for petitioner Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR), said the probe related to the former chief minister and it should be fair, the CJI said, "Now we have the President Rule there... it should not be a problem". The matter was subsequently kept on August 4. The state government earlier informed the bench that a forensic report on the authenticity of the leaked audio clips alleging the role of Singh in the ethnic violence was ready to be filed. Singh resigned as the chief minister of Manipur on February 9, amid rumblings within the state BJP and growing demands for a change in leadership. The top court had previously sought a sealed-cover forensic report from the CFSL on the authenticity of the leaked audio clips alleging Singh's role in the ethnic violence that began in May 2023. KOHUR had sought a court-monitored SIT probe into Singh's alleged role. Bhushan termed the contents of the audio leaks a "very serious matter" and said Singh was purportedly heard saying that Meitei groups were allowed to loot arms and ammunition of the state government. On November 8 last year, a bench headed by former CJI D Y Chandrachud directed KOHUR to produce material to indicate the authenticity of some of the leaked audio clips. Over 260 people were killed and thousands displaced since the ethnic violence broke out between the Imphal valley-based Meitei and neighbouring hills-based Kuki communities in May 2023. The clashes began after a "Tribal Solidarity March" was organised in the hill districts to protest against an order of the Manipur High Court on the Meitei community's demand for scheduled tribe status. Bhushan alleged that the recorded conversation prima facie showed the complicity and involvement of the state machinery in the violence against the Kuki Zo community. He said the clips had "disturbing conversations" and Singh could be heard instigating the violence and protecting the attackers. KOHUR's plea alleged that Singh was instrumental in "inciting, organising and thereafter centrally orchestrating the large-scale murder, destruction and other forms of violence against the Kuki-dominated areas in Manipur".
