PCG: 6 Pinoy seafarers rescued after landing craft sinks off Romblon
The PCG said the Filipino crew members were rescued at around 12:40 a.m. and were in good condition.
The LCT San Juan Bautista had a cargo of 2,500 liters of marine diesel when it departed from Guihulngan Port, Negros Oriental on Saturday, June 28 bound for drydocking in Navotas City, the PCG said.
The Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog (CGDSTL), however, assured that the risk of environmental damage caused by the sunken vessel is low.
'Based on the PCG's initial assessment, the risk of environmental damage in Southern Tagalog is low since the fuel is a light petroleum product that should dissipate quickly. The estimated 360-foot depth minimizes coral reef impact, and natural processes like dispersion and biodegradation further reduce the likelihood of significant shoreline or marine ecosystem damage,' CGDSTL said in a statement.
Further, CGDSTL said the sea remains clear based on the aerial surveillance conducted at around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
'We have alerted local fisherfolk and coastal barangays and, together with the LGU of Romblon and the DENR, we have conducted coastal security and seaborne patrols to monitor traces of oil sheens. Passenger ship, fishing vessel damaged in Lucena Port collision
A passenger ship collided with a fishing vessel in the Port of Lucena in Quezon on Thursday, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). In a statement, the PCG reported that at 7 a.m., passenger vessel MV Peñafrancia VI bound for Marinduque collided head-on with Fishing Vessel (FV) Sr. Fernando 2 near the Lucena breakwater. After the collision, the MV Peñafrancia was ordered to return to the Port of Talao-Talao, Lucena City for investigation and inspection, while passengers were transferred to MV Peñafrancia IX for medical checkup and cargo assessment. The passenger vessel sustained damage to the starboard bow and ramp, while the bow of FV Sr Fernando 2 incurred damage. All 82 passengers and 18 crew members aboard MV Peñafrancia VI, and 16 crew members aboard FV Sr Fernando were found to be safe and in good condition. The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has anchored off Manila Bay. 'This is the first port visit for George Washington on this patrol and it's the first port visit for George Washington in total since we're turning to as the [forward deployed naval forces] carrier in this region,' USS George Washington commanding officer Captain Timothy Waits told reporters on Wednesday. 'It's good to be able to pull in here and afford the crew some time for some rest and relaxation, a little bit of liberty, recharge your batteries, and be ready to get back,' he added. The USS George Washington crew will have several tours in the country, according to Waits. Asked if the presence of the US aircraft carrier is a response to the reported deployment of the Chinese navy's two aircraft carriers in the western Pacific for drills, Waits said, 'This is a typical patrol for us.'
