My date said I had one drink to impress him - so I downed it

Metro14-06-2025
It was 2007 and Indie Sleaze was at its peak.
I was 24 and living with my parents in a small town where everyone knew everyone.
I had just sacked off an are-we-aren't-we? situationship with Ronan*, one of my best boy mates that consisted largely of us sending each other deep-sounding Libertines lyrics and snogging in the pub during The Strokes tribute act.
My only chance to find myself a hot, Indie-Sleaze boyfriend who would make Ronan jealous was online dating.
So, I joined up to a site and typed in my requirements, which were essentially a trilby hat and slightly cleaner nails than Pete Doherty.
Joel* got in touch after a few days. At 28 he was a few years older and looked like Luke out of the Kooks with his curly brown hair, band T-shirt and vintage denim jacket.
We got to talking and had the same interests and tastes in music, so arranged to meet a week later at a gentrified, former-old-man-boozer one town over that played Up the Bracket on a loop.
We got off to a bad start.

He'd asked to meet outside the pub, rather than inside, and when I arrived five minutes late, having already warned him that my train had been stuck in a tunnel, Joel was checking his Nokia dramatically, clearly furious, arms folded and foot tapping in anger.
'I was literally about to leave. Being late's disrespectful, don't you think?'
I stuttered an apology, because I hadn't yet realised I didn't owe this man anything, and we went inside to the bar.
We were barely through the door before he started talking about Indie music. He was obsessed to the point where it was his entire personality.
Within 30 seconds he'd asked me to name all the members of The Pigeon Detectives, and then their birthdays, to prove I was a 'real fan'. And I hadn't even had a drink yet.
And as we propped ourselves up at the bar, he told me how he was in a band.
Correction: He was the band. No gigs. No bandmates. Just him and his limitless artistic vision.
'I've not found anyone good enough to join yet,' he said. 'I'm not being arrogant, it's just no one else gets it. I could be famous right now, but I'm waiting for the right moment.'
'I'm a poet,' he continued. 'A proper one.' And at this moment he proceeded to dig a battered notebook out of his pocket. And read to me, completely deadpan with unrelenting eye contact, his lyrics about skinny jeans and smoking cigarettes.
'Oh, very good,' I said, trying to catch the bartender's attention to get that drink I knew I was going to need.
Up close, Joel smelled slightly musty, like an old Oxfam coat.
'You actually look like your photo,' he said to me, happily. 'That's good. I was worried you'd be fat.'
He followed that up with, 'Because, you're already too old for me. I never usually date women as old as you. Women peak at 25, scientifically.'
I was four years younger than him. I was so gobsmacked at his arrogance that I stood there doing my best goldfish impression as he went on.
'I'm not sure if I fancy you yet. I'll get you a drink, and decide while you're drinking it.'
I asked for a gin and tonic, which he ordered and handed over like he was doing me a massive favour, studying me as he did so.
So, I did probably the only cool and quick-thinking thing I've done in my life: Took a breath, downed the whole thing in one, almost choked halfway through, slammed the glass down on the bar and said:
'I've decided that I don't fancy you.'
So, How Did It Go? is a weekly Metro.co.uk series that will make you cringe with second-hand embarrassment or ooze with jealousy as people share their worst and best date stories.

It was as if I'd slapped him, or stood on the bar and weed in a pint glass.
Then I walked out, without looking back, leaving him gaping behind me like someone had just unplugged his amp mid-solo.
He messaged me constantly for the next few weeks. He told me he still wasn't sure if he fancied me, but that he couldn't stop thinking about me. And that maybe he was in love with me?
Oh, and that he could write songs about me – I just had to meet up with him again so he could decide properly.
And of course, he sent me more of his poetry about Morrissey, vinyl and my lateness. More Trending
I never replied to any of it.
But I like to think there's now a Tinder bio of him out there, still looking for his perfect match, older, balding, with an aesthetically shot photo holding a guitar, and a bio that probably says: 'Poet. Visionary. Undiscovered genius. Looking for a girl who gets it.'
If you see it, swipe left.

Emmerdale Dylan star reveals how 'stars aligned' on unexpected comeback story

Back in February Emmerdale viewers were stunned by a special episode which revealed what happened to April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) after she ran away from home. We saw her having a tough time living on the streets and in a squat, and how she was befriended by a young man called Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle), who was also living rough. When April returned to the village, Dylan later came looking for her. Desperate to protect his daughter, Marlon (Mark Charnock) tried to get rid of Dylan – who was battling drug addiction – by various means. Eventually Marlon agreed to pay for rehab for Dylan and the character left the village. Now he's back, and Fred Kettle told us what's in store for Dylan. 'I think Dylan's going to get introduced with a few new characters, including Ray (Joe Absolom),' he revealed. 'There's a bit of a County Lines idea there that we're going to do which has been really fun to play. It's Ray that actually helps him. He sort of takes him under his wing and helps him get away from drugs. 'I think Ray's trying to get him to gain a bit of trust. I feel like there's a little bit of a son father figure relationship going on. So Ray can gain trust to make Dylan deal drugs, basically.' Of course the main attraction of the village, as far as Dylan is concerned, is to see April again, as Fred explained. 'Their bond they had during that special episode, their time on the street, it was so special,' he said. 'They both helped each other get through really, really tough times. And when they parted, I feel like that's all Dylan would be able to think about, you know. So she's bound to be on his mind and he's bound to want to go back and see her.' These two things are quite contrasting, on the one hand dealing drugs for Ray and on the other trying to keep his life together for April. Fred said that Dylan knows that Ray is manipulating him but it's the best option he sees open to him: 'Dylan knows he's doing the wrong thing but it's more morally correct than what he was doing when he was back on the streets.' Whichever way the character goes, Fred is relishing the chance to explore the character some more. 'I feel like there's a few different routes it could go down and I'm willing to take any of them,' he said. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Fred had some hints when he was previously at Emmerdale that the character of Dylan might have a future in the show, he revealed. More Trending 'I think before I finished there were definitely little talks happening. It was like, 'Oh you could come back.' I was like, 'Yeah I'd love to.' I think it's been perfect, really, because I've just finished college and two days later I was back on set filming. So it was ideal how that happened. I feel like the stars sort of aligned there.' He's looking forward to what's in store for his character. View More » 'It's going to be good. It's going to be a nice journey for a few different characters actually. David Attenborough fans left facing ‘nightmares' after spider sequence

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video For most people, just the thought of a cluster of spiders crawling on top of each other within a large, entangling web is enough to send a shiver down your spine. But for David Attenborough and his latest series Parenthood, which explores the trials and tribulations of parenting within the animal kingdom, clearly, that's not enough. The 99-year-old natural historian seems to be intent on showcasing one of the most nightmarish sequences possible as a 1,000-strong pack of young African social spiders can be seen eating their mothers. Captured by TV cameras in a never-before-seen moment, the premier episode of the series saw the spiders prey in a game of 'grandmother's footsteps' where they freeze in unison like musical statues before eating their elderly relatives. Attenborough explained 'demands of parenthood are finally taking their toll' on the mothers who offered their body as a 'gift' to their offspring before they departed. The atmospheric music, toe-curling sound effects and Attenborough's iconic voice combined to create the painstaking moment. 'Unsurprisingly, the moment left many viewers in complete shock. Oh my GOD they eat their Mum then all their relatives. It just confirms what I have always know spiders are EVIL,' Viki posted on X. 'These spiderlings are nightmare fuel,' Melanie shared. 'A lioness, a giraffe,a hippo & a gang of cannibal spiders, it's been a bit of a blood bath in tonight's #Parenthood I can hardly watch,' Neil added. Series producer and director Jeff Wilson described it as 'probably one of the best' sequences he had worked on in 30 years of film-making. '[I've] never heard Sir David deliver a sequence as good as that… it sort of brings a lump to your throat… he's the master at delivery,' he told the Guardian. 'It makes one feel quite sort of chilled to the bone that you know that your own young could do that. It's an extraordinary behaviour [but] when you step away from it and from the horror of it, it sort of makes sense.' He added that Attenborough was both 'delighted and horrified' by the groundbreaking footage. Joking, he also said that 'there will not be a parent of the land who won't turn up to school pickup without snacks ever again'. This comes after Metro exclusively shared a spectacularly tender moment from Parenthood between a female western lowland gorilla and her newborn baby. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The snoozing baby gorilla is in a state of peaceful relaxation while lying on his mother's chest, his eyes closed as the forest hums gently around them. The five-part series Parenthood promises to show viewers never-before-seen animal behaviours while delivering a 'universal message about preserving the natural world.' More Trending Speaking to The Mirror, BBC head of specialist factual commissioning, Jack Bootle, described Parenthood as 'wonderful, warm, engaging, and surprising'. He said that it is 'made by some of the very best wildlife filmmakers in the world,' adding: 'I'm thrilled Sir David is joining us again to narrate it.' Parenthood is streaming on BBC iPlayer. Linda Carter's EastEnders return ‘sealed' as she's ‘joined by legend'

Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) may have only just made a temporary EastEnders departure, but there's guaranteed drama ahead upon her return. After the former pub landlady handed over the keys to her beloved Queen Vic to Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace), she decided to head on a cruise with her children ahead of a fresh start. After a morning of reflection, she knew that the bad times in the boozer outweighed the good times, and it was the right decision to move on. However, before she could put her troubles to one side, she had to address a looming threat that had just arrived in Albert Square – Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier)! He had no idea that he had another sibling living in the area, as his dad Max (Jake Wood) had fathered Linda's youngest daughter Annie in 2021. And it's not just Oscar who was unaware, as Max has been kept in the dark every since she was the born. Linda knew that she'd have to tell Oscar eventually, and squirmed when he said he would take great joy in watching his dad's face drop. Luckily, after some tough words from his sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa), he agreed to keep quiet. Jake's return as the notorious womaniser was officially confirmed earlier this month, with Executive Producer Ben Wadey teasing: 'Whilst his character has only been away from Albert Square for four years, Walford, and the lives of those who live in it, have changed immensely. 'Max has a lot of unfinished business, but whether he is welcomed by his family remains to be seen. 'However, with a past as checkered as Max's, it's fair to say that many Walford residents will not be pleased to see him, putting the Brannings back at the heart of the Square, and the drama, this year.' Max's whereabouts are largely unknown. It's been explicitly stated on a number of occasions that both Oscar and Laurenhave been estranged from him for quite some time. He initially departed for New Zealand, and the last we heard of Max, brother Jack (Scott Maslen) had visited him in France. He then fled to Croatia with granddaughter Abi Jr. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? We're not privy to the stop offs on Linda's cruise, but it's entirely plausible that she may have a run-in with a face from her past while sailing the seas. Could Max be enjoying a holiday with Abi Jr, when she makes an unexpected friend – Annie – in the kids club? More Trending Imagine the reaction if Linda came back to Walford with Max on her arm! Of course, there's always the chance that he might come back prior to her return, and her whereabouts are kept a closely guarded secret. We do know that Jake has reprised the role briefly, before a permanent stint later in the year. Whatever the outcome, it's bound to be dramatic. This is Walford after all.
