Still Game stars share secrets behind their iconic scene

Glasgow Times22-05-2025
Still Game creators, Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan, delighted fans by sharing the story behind the Glasgow show's celebrated p*** pot skit.
The pair, who played best mates Jack Jarvis Esq and Victor McDade, posted the revelation on their shared Instagram account, tied to their blended Scotch whisky brand, Jack & Victor, which they launched in 2021 in homage to their much-loved alter egos.

The distilled spirit was a crowd-pleaser from day one and has remained a sales phenomenon since its May 2021 debut.
While watching the show, the pair shared a few secrets—not just how they came up with the idea, but also what was really in the pot.
Greg Hemphill said: "We used to write at Ford's house.
"He had a big carpet and we used to take turns going and making the tea.
"Whenever one of us came in, pretty much about once every two weeks, one of us would pretend to trip on the carpet and throw an empty cup over the other."
Despite knowing the joke, they never tired of catching each other off guard.
This eventually inspired the writing of the popular scene.
Ford admitted that when it came to going bigger, they stuck to one rule—do it the Still Game way
He said: "The way to top out on that is to fill a big pot with p*** and throw it over your pal."
However, in a bid to manage fans' curiosity, Hemphill put an end to the speculation of what was actually in the pot.
He explained: "It's apple juice, apple juice and orange juice, because that was what they put in it to make it 'aw cloudy'."

The joke went down well with fans, who were quick to comment on their excitement.
One fan admitted: "Doesn't matter how many times I see that bit, it's still funny."
Another commenter expressed hope that the duo could collaborate again, saying: "I love Still Game, hopefully, Ford and Greg can do another show."
While a third fan added: "That'll be me away to binge it again."
Jack and Victor's drink is described as "wonderfully balanced" with flavours of sweet malted barley, honeyed orchard fruits, vanilla and oak spice, and a delicate peat smokiness.

List of prohibited items for Murrayfield as countdown to Oasis continues

Oasis are to take to the Edinburgh stage for three nights in August. The countdown to the Gallagher's much-anticipated gigs at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium is officially underway, with just over two weeks to go until Oasis take the Scottish stage for the first time in 15 years. And with over 67,000 fans attending each of the three nights, which take place on August 8, 9 and 12, it's definitely time to start planning what to bring and how to get there. We've covered public transport options and road closures, but another important thing to consider is what you're planning on bringing into the stadium. Murrayfield has strict rules on what you can and cannot bring into the concert venue, so it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with them ahead of the event. Security staff will be searching every single fan on entry, so it's vital you don't bring any contraband which could get confiscated or cause delays at the gate. Here's everything you need to know about which items you're allowed to take into the Edinburgh Oasis concerts, and which will see you held up by security. Which items are prohibited from Murrayfield Stadium? A number of items are banned from Murrayfield, including: Bags larger than A4 (30cm x 21cm) Only bags smaller than an A4 sheet of paper are allowed into the gig. There is also no bag drop policy, so be wary not to break this rule or your bag may be confiscated. However, bags required to carry medical or childcare items are an exception, and those with these bags are to enter via the dedicated turnstiles. Knives or weapons Possession of any dangerous or hazardous items may constitute a criminal offence and will be reported to Police Scotland. Food or drink All food and drink from outside the venue is prohibited from taking in on entry. Exceptions include an unopened soft plastic water bottle of no bigger than 500ml, or an empty collapsible water bottle of the same size which you can refill in the venue. If you don't already have a collapsible water bottle, some cheap options are available, such as this one from Amazon, which retails at £9.99. Alternatively, this Decathlon option from Argos is available for £12. Flasks and hard water bottles Hard water bottles and hip flasks, as well as thermos flasks and metal drinks containers are all banned from Murrayfield. If you arrive with one of these, you will be required to bin it upon entry. Fireworks, flares and smoke bombs Possession of fireworks, smoke bombs, flares or other pyrotechnic items will result in a report to Police Scotland as they may constitute a criminal offence. Banners or flags which contain offensive or abusive slogans Banners or flags with statements that may be considered racist, homophobic, political or discriminatory will also be confiscated. Small flags and banners are permitted but the venue says that any flag or banner, irrelevant of content, which is larger than 12inches x 16inches (30cm x 41cm) with poles longer than 1m in length, or thicker than one inch (2.5cm) will not be permitted into the stadium. Musical instruments Don't bring your guitar expecting to be invited up on stage for Wonderwall- only the band are allowed to bring their instruments. Umbrellas of any size Scotland may be rainy, but you'll need a rain jacket or waterproof poncho as your umbrella won't make it through the Murrayfield gates. Laser pointers and torches Don't bring a torch or laser pointer. Air horns, party poppers and silly string are also prohibited. Animals All animals except guide dogs are forbidden, and those bringing an assistance dog should make Customer Services aware ahead of the gig. Large cameras Cameras with a lens of more than three inches or with a detachable lens aren't allowed either, and it must be possible for any camera you're bringing in to fit comfortably into a pocket or bag. Audio recording equipment This includes laptops and iPads. Tripods and selfie sticks You may want to record moments of the upcoming concerts, but gig goers shouldn't bring any large equipment with them, including selfie sticks or tripods. The Celebrity Traitors 'confirmed' cast salaries make me feel incredibly uneasy

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video When the cast of the first-ever celebrity edition of Claudia Winkleman's cloak and dagger reality series, The Traitors, was announced in May, no one could quite believe what they were reading. Months later, I'll still be going about my day and remember Sir Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte Church, and Clare Balding will be gallivanting around a Scottish castle together and I'm thankful I'm alive to see it. The full line-up is astonishing, an incredible feat for Studio Lambert, which is the production company behind the show, which is currently at the top of its game. They also do Race Across The World, arguably the second-biggest reality TV series in the UK right now. In theory, I always imagined there would be a stream of A-list talent queuing up to take part in the first ever Celebrity Traitors. But still, it felt like a miracle they managed to pull off what must be the best line-up in celebrity reality television history. Now that miracle seems even more unreal. We don't have a fixed release date yet, but Celebrity Traitors is coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn. We'll update you when we know more! Comedian Alan Carr Singer and songwriter Cat Burns Actor Celia Imrie Singer Charlotte Church Broadcaster Clare Balding Historian David Olusoga Former England rugby player Joe Marler Comedian Joe Wilkinson Presenter Jonathan Ross Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway Comedian Lucy Beaumont Actor Mark Bonnar Actor and comedian Nick Mohammed Content creator Niko Omilana Singer and songwriter Paloma Faith Actor Ruth Codd Actor and presenter Stephen Fry Actor and comedian Tameka Empson Former professional diver Tom Daley The prize money for winning Celebrity Traitors will be £100,000, which will go the the charity of the winner's choosing. On Tuesday's episode of The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, host Marina Hyde reported that every single star taking part will be paid a flat rate of £40,000. According to Hyde's sources, Sir Stephen Fry – by far the show's biggest booking – will receive exactly the same fee as actress Ruth Codd, best known for starring in Netflix's 2022 series The Midnight Club. Join our The Traitors WhatsApp channel for live episode coverage, behind-the-scenes gossip and a place to recover from all the cliffhangers. Simply click on this link, select 'Join Chat' and you're in! Don't forget to turn on notifications! This is despite the former easily being the biggest draw for audiences, likely to even lure in viewers who have never seen The Traitors. Everyone is playing the same game, has made the same commitment, and will be valued in exactly the same way. My immediate reaction is that I'm uncomfortable – but let me get to the positives first. A flat-rate – if true – is a big equaliser, meaning no big egos to match. More often than not, the highest-paid 'talent' on reality TV can be a car-crash. Just this year, Mickey Rourke was said to have been paid £500,000 to be confined to a compound with the likes of Jojo Siwa and former Conservative MP Michael Fabricant in Celebrity Big Brother. He lasted less than a week and had to be removed from the house for 'unacceptable behaviour'. In 2023, Nigel Farage was reportedly paid £1.5 million for I'm A Celebrity. Sure, he ended up coming third, but his appearance in the jungle alone threatened to tarnish the show for good. So a flat rate for the Celebrity Traitors season would genuinely be a very welcome shift in direction. Still, it sits uncomfortably with me that some of The Celebrity Traitors cast are being paid at all, especially when it's being pitched as a game for charity — with a maximum of £100,000 being donated to the winner's chosen cause. In total, the cast is reportedly being paid £760,000 – that's £660,000 more than the money that can possibly be raised for the charity or charities who benefit from a winning celebrity. Should three faithful come out on top at the end, the flat £40,000 rate would mean they've individually been paid more than they've raised for their charity, which feels disingenuous and actually quite vulgar. It's been reported previously that The Traitors contestants in the regular civilian seasons are only compensated for their time at a rate of around £100 a day, unless they win the eventual prize. As evidenced by the emotional stories of why they want to win, it's clear many of them likely need it a lot more than the cast playing the celebrity version. Granted, it's a life-changing experience: Minah Shannon, the true hero of season 3, has just gone on to land a slot on BBC Radio 1, while Alexander Dragonetti hosted his own Friday night series on Classic FM. Many contestants make a quick buck through endorsements, appearances, and a substantial boost in social media followers, but they can give up their jobs and are only paid lost wages during filming. Yes, they have the chance to walk away with a huge amount of money – but when split between other Faithfuls, it's roughly the same as the celebrities who are being paid anyway. Of course, I appreciate some of the celebrity line-up will have had to move projects or even drop projects to make it work. I'm also sure playing The Traitors for two weeks isn't always the jolly it appears to be on TV. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video And I have no doubt some of the cast will donate their fee to the charity of their choice anyway. Sir Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross are worth tens of millions and have done plenty of charity work for free – I'd be amazed and honestly very disappointed if they actually took any of their fee home with them. For other names on the bill, the rumoured £40,000 probably means a lot more. Charlotte Church recently admitted she blew her £25million fortune and says she is 'no longer a millionaire'. I mean, yes, join the club – but also £40,000 is a lot of money to anyone who isn't rolling in it. Admittedly, it's naïve of me to think the cast won't have been paid at all or that celebrities don't lend their name and the value it has to campaigns and charities without making a few bob. But it does make me uncomfortable. I'm A Celebrity doesn't donate any prize money to charity, which isn't exactly more honourable, but at least there's no pretence. The stars on that show are very open about taking part for the money and there's nothing wrong with that. I'd want six-figures too to spend a day with Nigel Farage, let alone three weeks. So what's the solution? The cast signs up without pay? I'm sure Studio Lambert could have found an all-star cast of talent that would genuinely want to take part for the love of the game and their charity without being paid a dime. More Trending But perhaps I'd feel more comfortable if the prize to the charity was guaranteed to be larger than the pay to the celebrity. The format of The Traitors is unbeatable. Combined with the star power of this line-up, I can't imagine anything else will be as popular on television this year. I can't even think of anything, at least in entertainment, that will come close. If the show's going to fork out the cash on celebs to take part, then maybe it should also be willing to double the prize pot, bringing in some real jeopardy for the celebs so you'd make a better – and fairer – show. Jack Osbourne reveals adorable moment Ozzy's granddaughter realises his fame

Jack Osbourne shared a sweet moment with his daughter Maple as they watched Ozzy Osbourne perform on screen years before the Prince of Darkness' death Jack Osbourne captured the adorable moment his daughter Maple realised her granddad was a hugely famous musician. Following the sad news of Ozzy Osbourne's death on Tuesday at the age of 76, a resurfaced clip from 2023 showed the loving bond he had with his granddaughter. ‌ While Jack, 39, often shared clips of his kids, including them with Ozzy at their home, it was a video of Maple watching her " Papa" perform that really pulls at the heartstrings. Jack is sitting on a settee in the clip, while his toddler daughter is excitedly standing, with the help of a table. ‌ The duo are watching footage of Ozzy performing on stage and while Jack has a wry smile on his face, his daughter is a lot more vocal in her glee. The excited tot keeps shouting "papa" at the screen while beaming with joy. She then points towards the clip as she continue to smile and shout. ‌ And further clips showed how the bond has continued to blossom between the pair as Jack showed Maple enjoying her papa's final ever show under three weeks ago. "It never gets old. Still mesmerized by grand-dad," Jack gushed as he shared a clip of his kids enjoying Ozzy's performance on stage at Villa Park. While Jack shares Maple with current wife Aree Gearhart, he also has three daughters — Pearl, Andy and Minnie — with his ex-wife Lisa Stelly. The trio were also seen in his recent clip enjoying the tunes of Ozzy. ‌ Just before his death, Jack gushed over his 'loving' father amid his many health woes. He proudly spoke about his dad's life and career just two weeks ago, describing Ozzy as 'funny and unique'. Ozzy's son Jack had been at a screening of a new Ozzy Osbourne documentary, 'The Nine Lives Of Ozzy Osbourne', in Birmingham on July 4, the day before the Back To The Beginning concert. ‌ Speaking at the Millennium Point Centre in Birmingham, Jack said: 'What are my three words to describe my dad? I would say funny, unique and powerful. He is an incredible man. He really is. His contribution to music is bigger than his faults. This whole weekend has been emotional.' Jack also revealed his dad's planned biopic; the production will be even more eagerly awaited by fans now. He said: 'We do have the film on the way. "We have a lot of good forward momentum on the Ozzy biopic. We have a director attached now and the script is done and Sony Studios is going to be producing it. ‌ 'We are really excited about it so maybe we will do the premiere here in Birmingham. It is about to go through a script rewrite. It's going to be raw. We are not pulling any punches, we are really laying it all out. The director we have is absolutely phenomenal. 'I can't say who he is but we are very lucky to have him and he is a die hard fan. I have the smiley knee tattoos that my dad has and he (our director) has them too. The film is in good hands. If the evil overlords of Hollywood give us the green light we could be filming in the spring so maybe it will be out summer 2027 fingers crossed.'
