Water Department slammed for Labuan water crisis
Published on: Thu, Jul 10, 2025 Text Size: The empty water cistern in Wong's house. LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) has criticised the Water Department (JBA) for its continued failure to resolve the island's worsening water crisis, calling its response slow and inadequate. Its President, Datuk Wong Kii Yii, said he was personally affected after his home was left without water for several days, and despite repeated calls to JBA, no water delivery was made. 'My family, along with other residents nearby, had no access to clean water. I contacted JBA several times asking for a water tanker to be sent, but there was no prompt response,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. He said it was only after contacting the Chief Executive Officer of Labuan Corporation (Perbadanan Labuan), Sukuran Taib, that a water delivery was arranged using a PL tanker. He commended the swift action by Sukuran and his team. Wong called on JBA to be more responsive to public complaints and act quickly to assist residents in need of water, especially during prolonged supply disruptions. He also criticised the Public Works Department (JKR) and JBA for failing to properly cover up a road section near his house, where pipe repair works had been carried out, causing inconvenience to road users. Wong urged the Government to take serious and immediate action to address the worsening water situation in Labuan, stressing that it is affecting daily life and investor confidence. 'The Government has grand plans for Labuan's development under the Federal Territories Department (JWP), including programmes like the Borneo Flora Festival, but the people are suffering from basic shortages. Even the flowers at the event get watered daily, but not the people,' he said. He said he has hesitated to bring potential investors and tourists to Labuan due to the unresolved water issues and warned that it may affect the island's image and economic prospects. Wong reiterated his call for the government and related agencies to stop ignoring the needs of the people and prioritise essential services like water supply. 'Don't let the people of Labuan continue to suffer. JBA must respond to water supply complaints quickly, especially for rural residents,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid tariff deadline concerns
Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8.03 am, the local currency strengthened to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, up from Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by cautious optimism ahead of the looming Aug 1 tariff deadline. At 8.03 am, the local currency strengthened to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, up from Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is likely to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 today as markets remain wary of potential tariff impacts. 'Investors are adopting a guarded stance, waiting for clearer signals on trade policies,' he noted. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes attributed the ringgit's early gains to shifting macroeconomic conditions. 'The US dollar is under pressure from falling Treasury yields and domestic political concerns, which is benefiting emerging market currencies like the ringgit,' he said. Innes added that the ringgit's rebound reflects more than just a temporary bounce. 'A softer dollar, renewed trade talks, and hopes for tariff relief are creating a favourable environment for the ringgit,' he told Bernama. He also highlighted ongoing negotiations between Malaysia and the US, where Malaysian officials are reportedly seeking a reduced tariff rate of 15–20 per cent, compared to the proposed 25 per cent. Against other major currencies, the ringgit showed mixed performance. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8767/8891 from 2.8690/8739 and dipped versus the euro to 4.9528/9740 from 4.9512/9594. However, it edged higher against the British pound, rising to 5.7052/7295 from 5.7088/7183. Regionally, the ringgit strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.3001/3144 from 3.3011/3071 and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.7 from 259.1/259.7. It also gained slightly against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.43 from 7.41/7.43. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.1138/1767 from 13.0899/1172. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Making life better for workers
RISING living costs may be a reality, but there's now a smarter way for Malaysian workers to stretch their ringgit further. The Madani Workers' Card (Kad Pekerja Madani), introduced by the Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma), provides real, everyday savings — offering unionised workers discounts of up to 30% on essentials, services, healthcare, education and more. It's a practical, targeted initiative aimed at easing financial pressures while recognising the vital contributions of Malaysia's workforce. For the benefit of workers: Anwar (centre) launching the 2025 National Labour Day celebration at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, in the presence of (from left) Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star Launched on May 1, this year by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in conjunction with the National Labour Day celebration at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, the digital card is already proving to be a game-changer. The Madani Workers' Card can be used across a wide range of products and services, including supermarkets, food and beverages, clothing, travel and accommodation. More than 100 strategic partners have been roped in to support the programme's success. Out of the 100 registered strategic partners, 32 have confirmed their readiness to welcome cardholders while the remaining partners are in the final stages of deliberating the most effective implementation methods to ensure a smooth rollout. Among them are Mydin, Starbucks Coffee, ZUS Coffee, Marrybrown, Resorts World Genting, Socar Mobility Malaysia, Jungle Gym, Ripley's Adventureland and The Top Penang — all offering valuable rebates that can make a noticeable difference in everyday spending. The timing couldn't be more fitting. With recent increases in electricity tariffs and adjustments to the Sales and Service Tax (SST), managing household budgets has become increasingly challenging, especially for low- and middle-income earners. The Madani Workers' Card addresses these realities head-on, providing a timely and effective solution through accessible, real-world discounts — empowering workers to navigate economic challenges with greater confidence and security, while also reinforcing the government's broader efforts to safeguard workers' well-being in today's evolving economic landscape. Workers across sectors can enjoy the benefits, reflecting the government's commitment to inclusive worker support. Inclusive support While early recipients have already begun enjoying their benefits, Kesuma is aiming for one million cardholders by the end of the year — a bold target that reflects the government's strong commitment to worker welfare under the Madani framework. The Madani Workers' Card isn't just about discounts — it's about dignity, recognition and building a support system for those who keep the nation moving. It fosters a culture of appreciation while easing the daily financial burden of Malaysian workers.
