Marvel's ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Reveals Mole Man as New Villain
The latest Marvel movie will hit theaters on July 25, 2025, and slowly but surely, a few small leaks have come to light. The most recent came during a panel with the cast at CCXP Mexico, as Culture Crave revealed on X.
During the clip, Joseph Quinn, who will play Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the new Fantastic Four film, dropped the news that a second villain is debuting in the film: Mole Man.
"It's certainly a very stacked cast. We've got a lot of fantastic characters in there," said Quinn. "There's also Mole Man, who is wonderful in it. But Galactus is the big bad."
The big question is whether Quinn made this comment on purpose or if it was a slip-up by the 31-year-old actor. Considering how tight-lipped Marvel likes to keep things ahead of movie releases, it'd be a surprise if Quinn dropped this out of nowhere when he was supposed to keep it under wraps.
As Collider detailed, Mole Man is one of the Fantastic Four's "classic enemies in the comics" and appeared in The Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. Disney+ Just Dropped A 100% Scored, Canon MCU Show Without A Word
While I know that Disney has said it's scaling back its Marvel TV series ambitions, what they've been doing lately with their 'leftover' shows is nothing short of bizarre. Last time it was Ironheart, released with little fanfare in two weeks of episode dumps. Today? It's Eyes of Wakanda, a new MCU series that unlike What If…? and its multiverses, is full MCU main-Earth canon. Eyes of Wakanda is a four-episode series that was binge-dumped today, and it's more like a two-hour movie with 30-minute episode lengths. The synopsis is: 'Wakandan warriors throughout history go on dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts.' The episodes span a wide range, including one taking place during the Trojan War and another featuring the fourth Iron Fist we've seen in the MCU, one from far in the past. Kind of a big deal! Again, this may be centuries before the events of the current MCU, but everything in here is canon, and it's been added to the official timeline of the universe, beating out Captain America: The First Avenger, which obviously kicked things off during World War II. Disney did not appear to think it was worth bothering with really any promotion for this at all, not in the run-up to launch nor today on launch day. Though I suppose it did show me it first when I logged in. Eyes of Wakanda has made it to enough critics to gather eight reviews, all of which are positive, to give it a 100% score. I'm not sure how many more will be added here. I've started the series, and I already like it more than What If…?, a series that I think went deeply off the rails by the end. I don't love the animation style, personally, but the storytelling is very solid so far. The next two Marvel shows coming up are Marvel Zombies in December 2025 and Wonder Man in July 2026. We will also see a new season of Daredevil and the Punisher special. VisionQuest will be coming up at some point. For now, Eyes of Wakanda is a quick watch and helps bolster the lore of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by heading further in the past than we've ever seen before, and the deep roots of Wakanda are the perfect mechanism to do so. 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' proves why the MCU needs to get weirder to shake its post-'End Game' slump
I fell off the MCU hard after "Avengers: Endgame" — and I'm far from the only one. Marvel has struggled to regain its momentum post-Thanos snap, a fact made crystal clear last year when Robert Downey Jr. was announced to rejoin the franchise. Between a convoluted jumble of multiversal plotlines and TV spin-offs, the prominent exit of the MCU's next big bad, and extensive reshoots that left big-ticket sequels like "Captain America: Brave New World" a hot mess, the MCU is facing a reckoning. Don't think that the MCU's stumbling means audiences are any less hungry for superhero flicks. The success of James Gunn's 'Superman' proves there's still a strong appetite for caped crusaders. It's the highest-grossing solo Superman film to date after earning $292.4 million domestically at the box office, overtaking the $291 million total of the 2013 "Man of Steel." The critical success of recent MCU entries like "Thunderbolts" is a promising sign that Marvel may be close to finding its groove again. After seeing "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" in the theaters, I'm confident Marvel can keep this momentum going — but only if it commits to getting weirder from here on out. When it comes to the MCU, weird works. That much was clear even before "Endgame." Taika Waititi's "Thor Ragnarok" was a huge middle finger to the previous Thor movies, steeped in '80s rock opera camp with a comedic bent. It injected new life into one of the most underdeveloped Avengers after his snoozefest of a second film. In that same vein, "Wandavision" is the jewel of the MCU's catalogue of shows on Disney Plus, and it marked a stark departure for the franchise with its mix of sitcom shenanigans, fourth-wall breaking, and horror vibes. I wasn't surprised to learn the show's director, Matt Shakman, is in the director's chair for "First Steps, because both the TV show and the movie share a seriously impressive commitment to a distinct aesthetic. With the Fantastic Four's track record of big-screen adaptations, I wasn't looking forward to this summer's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." Then I saw the trailer, and I was immediately sold on the look, if nothing else. As a huge "Fallout" fan, the retro-futuristic aesthetic instantly caught my attention. Marvel was able to craft such a unique style for "First Steps" because it's set on a new Earth apart from the rest of the MCU, one where the Space Age never came to a close. And that fact shines through in every shot of this strange, colorful retrofuturistic version of Manhattan. It feels straight out of a comic book, a fever dream of mod fashion, Flash-Gordon-inspired rocket ships, flying cars, and midcentury modern pizzazz. It's visually distinct from anything in the MCU we've seen so far, and I sincerely hope it paves the way for even more stylish (and strange) versions of Earth in future MCU outings.
