Wave of syringe attacks hits France's street music festival, over 140 victims reported
Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting 'unprecedented crowds' in Paris.
Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities.
The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital.
Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault.
'Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests,' the ministry said.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents across Paris, prosecutors said.
All three reported feeling unwell.
Across France, 12 suspects have been arrested, the interior ministry said. Among them were four people in the south-western city of Angouleme suspected of having targeted around 50 victims, said a police source.
Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris.
Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen.
Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured.
The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that 'no major incident has been reported'. — AFP

PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating the discovery of a man's body left at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru, believed to be linked to an attempted robbery at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. CCTV footage showed two persons arriving in a dark-coloured car and leaving the body at the hospital. Police are working to identify them. A post-mortem confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Preliminary investigations revealed that around 12.10am, a group armed with parangs attacked another group, one of whom had a pistol, at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. The altercation led to shots being fired. Police later arrested two local men and a foreign national, aged between 30 and 40, in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur, at about 7pm yesterday. A Glock 19 pistol, a firearm licence book, bullets, a magazine with six 9mm rounds, a car and spent bullet casings were seized. One suspect is a personal bodyguard, though police are verifying the legality of the firearm involved. All three suspects have been remanded until July 10. Kumar said police are working to determine their connection to the dead man.

‘I will keep trying': Record Channel crossings drive UK-France plan to intercept migrant ‘taxi boats'

Men armed with machetes greeted by gunshots at JB petrol station

PETALING JAYA : An attempted robbery by four men armed with machetes was thwarted when one of the victims fired several shots at them. The incident is believed to have occurred at a petrol station in Johor Bahru at about 12.10am yesterday, reported Kosmo! A two-minute CCTV clip showed four masked men, each armed with a machete, exit a car and begin smashing the windows of another car at the parking lot. A passenger in the second car fired several shots at the attackers, three of whom fled in their car while the fourth ran towards a road. It is understood that there were three men in the second car. One got out and ran away, while the other two exited briefly before driving away. Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said police are investigating.
