Man arrested for allegedly falling asleep, causing fatal crash that killed 5 near Terrell, Texas DPS says
A man has been arrested in connection with a crash that killed five people and injured several others near Terrell after he fell asleep behind the wheel on Saturday, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed.
According to DPS, 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, faces several charges, including five counts of manslaughter.
The crash happened at about 2:40 p.m. Saturday on I-20 near Hiram Road, when DPS said Gonzalez-Companioni allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his 18-wheeler, failing to see stalled traffic. He struck a Ford F-150 carrying five people. The 18-wheeler driven by Gonzalez-Companioni was then pushed into two other 18-wheelers, causing one to jack-knife and strike an SUV, and two other cars.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department described the crash as "horrific" and declared a "mass casualty" event. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, shutting down traffic in both directions as first responders aided the injured and investigators worked to determine the cause.
Four of the five people in the Ford F-150 were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fifth was care-flighted to a hospital in critical condition, DPS said in a news release.
One person in the SUV struck by the jack-knifed semi was also pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.
The names of the victims have not been publicly released at this time. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
Gonzalez-Companioni is currently in custody in Kaufman County.

San Angelo man jailed in connection with baby's death
A San Angelo man charged in connection with the death of his 4-month-old daughter, who was found dead inside a motel dresser drawer in Houston, remained jailed Monday in the Tom Green County Jail. Jeremy B. Fancher was being held on an $850,000 bond for a murder charge out of Harris County, online jail records show. The body of Brookelynn Fancher was found inside a motel dresser drawer back in May 2024, Gonzalez posted on Facebook. On May, 26, 2024, Harris County sheriff's deputies responded to a child death at a motel in the 7100 block of Rancho Mission Drive in Houston, Gonzalez stated in the post. "The parents were reportedly living at the location for over a year," Gonzalez stated. The infant was found unresponsive and pronounced deceased, the sheriff stated. "The infant reportedly slept inside a dresser drawer and that's where she was found," Gonzalez stated. "Murder charges were accepted on both the father and mother of the infant." Jeremy Fancher was taken into custody and booked into the Tom Green County Jail for murder on June 21, online jail records show. Sgt. John Bouligny with the San Angelo Police Department said the local police don't have details on the murder charge. "We don't have details on the charge since it was a warrant arrest. We were assisting the other agencies," Bouligny said. On Facebook, Gonzalez thanked those who worked on the case in the Harris County Sheriff's Office and at other agencies, including San Angelo police and the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office. "Thanks to them we are closer to securing justice for baby Brookelynn," Gonzalez said. Five people are dead and a sixth person is in the hospital after the crash that shut down I-20 near Hiram Road on Saturday, authorities said. Then I heard helicopters, so I ran outside." Corinne Mulcahy said she just happened to be looking out the window and saw the crash. "So I looked up and I saw the first truck, I saw his brake lights, saw the F-150, and here comes this tractor trailer," said Mulcahy. "And I'll tell you, man, I don't know how many miles an hour he was going when he was driving, but he hit that car, and I knew he killed everybody in that truck." For hours, the highway was shut down in both directions. "People started calling me and they were like, 'Oh my goodness, do you have a restroom? We've been sitting here for three or four hours,'" said Buddha Wyrick, the property manager at TR3 RV Resort. "I didn't know they had to turn their cars off. So they were like heat exhaustion and stuff." Wyrick said dozens of people walked over to use the restroom. "They were upset and traumatized. There was a few, like, that saw it in front of them," Wyrick said. "They were like, 'We're the fourth car back,' or, 'the second car back.' And they were telling me stories." Residents said tragedies like this serve as a reminder to always be cautious.
