British teenager released from Dubai jail after royal pardon

Sky Newsa day ago
A British teenager sentenced to one year in a Dubai jail for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl has been released after receiving a royal pardon, a campaign group has said.
Marcus Fakana, 18, of Tottenham, north London, received the pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and is safely in the UK, Detained In Dubai said.
The group's chief executive Radha Stirling said Mr Fakana "is currently recovering".
She added: "His case has attracted significant public attention due to concerns about the criminalisation of tourists and disproportionate sentencing.
"We believe this case highlights the urgent need for expedited legal processes for foreign nationals and safeguards against unnecessary custodial sentences."
Mr Fakana was with his parents in the United Arab Emirates when a "holiday romance blossomed" with another Londoner, who has since turned 18, the campaign group previously said.
He was arrested at his hotel last year after the girl's mother reported the relationship to Dubai police after she allegedly found their pictures and chats.
In Dubai, the age of consent is 18.

Alan Jones's lawyers have ‘grave concerns' about legality of police phone search, court hears

Alan Jones's lawyers have 'grave concerns' about the legality of a search of the former broadcaster's phone conducted by police on 18 November before he was charged with 35 historical sexual assault offences. Jones is on bail and was excused from Tuesday's hearing at Sydney central local court but his lawyer, Bryan Wrench, complained about the police download of Jones's phone. 'We then wrote to the police regarding our concerns about a search conducted on the 18th of November,' Wrench told the court. 'The legality, journalistic privilege, as well as issues regarding legal privilege.' As a result of this legal complaint to the New South Wales police, the force had engaged lawyers, Wrench said. Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email The 84-year-old has allegedly committed a range of offences in various places in NSW, including Newtown, Sydney city, Fitzroy Falls, Alexandria and Tamworth. Jones is a former 2GB and Sky News Australia broadcaster. In a brief hearing before magistrate Jennifer Giles, Wrench said he also had an issue with an apparent delay in providing the defence with the entire brief of evidence, and accused the prosecution of not meeting its duties of disclosure. Since the last hearing in May, the defence had received more witness statements, which Wrench said he was was 'quite concerned about' because the prosecution had had them since November and December, but only just provided them. This is not 'a selective prosecution' and 'they have to give us everything', Wrench said. Wrench asked on Tuesday for an extension of the charge certification process, which was granted and will now be heard on 18 September. The prosecutor will review the evidence and confirm the charges by that date. In total, Jones is facing 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault, 20 counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault. Police set up Strike Force Bonnefin in March 2024 to investigate alleged indecent assaults and sexual touching incidents allegedly involving Jones, after they were raised by the Sydney Morning Herald's investigative reporter Kate McClymont. Jones has denied all wrongdoing and said he was planning legal action against Nine newspapers for the 'demonstrably false' allegations. He last appeared in court in December, when it was confirmed he will face a jury trial on the charges. 'I am certainly not guilty, and I'll be presenting my case to a jury, as you heard this morning,' he said. 'I want you to understand this, these allegations are all either baseless or they distort the truth. And you should know that prior to my arrest I was given no opportunity by police to answer any of these allegations.'

Tourist outraged as notorious bar charges €1000 for three meals - including €350 for one fish

A tourist visiting the sun-soaked holiday hotspot of Mykonos has spoken out after being hit with a staggering €1,000 bill at a controversial beachside restaurant - including an eye-watering €350 charge for a single piece of fish. Located on the scenic Platis Gialos beach on the Greek island is DK Oyster, which markets itself as a 'high-end destination' catering to those 'seeking special moments of relaxing seclusion '. But in recent years, countless customers have left a string of negative reviews online, claiming their experience had left a massive dent in their wallets. One traveller, known only as Jessica L on TripAdvisor, shared her experience online, calling her visit to DK Oyster 'the worst experience in Mykonos'. In a scathing one-star review, she described how she and her fellow diners were charged over €1,000 (£861) for just three dishes. She wrote: 'The place is an abuse of price. For a whole fish we paid 350 euros and for three dishes 1000 euros. 'The worst experience in Mykonos, because not even at Scorpions, which is one of the best places, did we pay that amount for a dinner for 5 people with a starter, main course, and dessert.' While the restaurant lists prices such as €24.80 (£21.36) per 100g of sea bream, customers allege they are often not informed of the full cost until the final bill arrives - with some claiming they are charged for fish by the gram without prior knowledge. Other TripAdvisor users echoed Jessica's frustration, with several branding the restaurant a 'complete scam.' Describing the venue as a 'shocking scam', one former customer, who goes by Sue, wrote: 'A staff member brought over an additional drink - unrequested - as a "gift" for our group of four. It seemed like a friendly gesture... until it appeared on the bill.' Sue also alleged she had been charged €400 for a 'handful' of alcoholic and soft drinks - including €35 for a Coca-Cola. Another visitor, Amrita, who dined at the restaurant in June 2024, claimed she was 'lured in' with free sunbeds and handed a menu, to which she decided to order the the fish. She added: 'They never explained that the fish is charged by the weight of the full fish. We became aware when they brought a bill for €400. The actual fish served was greater than 1kg.' A third guest, Gabriela, accused DK Oyster of 'theft,' writing: 'They convince you to order a beer that costs 35 euros each. And quickly come with the bill for you to already pay and leave.' Finally, another customer urged future visitors to 'avoid at all costs', adding: 'Lunch and sunbeds for €35. But when we added two bottles of water and a Diet Coke, they added on €51. They then added €5 for use of ketchup and €18 for small fries.' DK Oyster has maintained a controversial reputation over the years, frequently hitting headlines for allegedly misleading pricing tactics. The restaurant, which has plush sunbeds and seaside views, appears to cater to luxury travellers - but many reviewers suggest the concept is overshadowed by extortionate billing The restaurant, which boasts plush sunbeds and dramatic seaside views, appears to cater to luxury travellers - but many reviewers suggest the concept is overshadowed by extortionate billing and aggressive sales tactics. MailOnline Travel has reached out to DK Oyster for comment. It comes as MailOnline revealed in 2024 the owner of the restaurant flaunts his jet-setting lifestyle on social media. Dimitrios Kalamaras, whose initials give the DK Oyster restaurant its name, apparently earns colossal amounts from hapless tourists who order food or drinks without checking the prices. DK Oyster hit the headlines in July 2024 for charging €121 for three scrawny crab legs to a team of undercover MailOnline journalists. Kalamaras was believed to have been the man seen on video arguing with our reporter over his astronomical bill.

Freed Dubai teen Marcus Fakana's jail hell as he was 'forced to watch rapes'

Nineteen-year-old Marcus Fakana has now been released from a hellish Dubai prison after he was jailed for having sex with another teen. British teen Marcus Fakana has at last been freed from a Dubai prison following 12 months of "hell". Nineteen-year-old Marcus, from Tottenham, north London, had been staying with family in the United Arab Emirates city when he struck up a holiday romance with another teenager, who was also from London, at the Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah, reports the Mirror. The pair had consensual sex, but as the girl was still a few weeks off her 18th birthday, the then 18-year-old Marcus faced severe consequences under the harsh legal system of the UAE, where sex between under-18s is illegal. Local police officers were tipped off by the girl's mother, and Marcus was put behind the bars of the notorious al-Awir prison, where he spent his birthday and New Year's far from home, in squalid and dangerous conditions. Holiday romance gone wrong Marcus and the girl had intended to continue their relationship once they returned to the UK. However, everything changed on August 31, 2024, when, while still on holiday, Marcus was taken into police custody. Speaking previously about the summer fling, Marcus told the Mirror: "We had a wonderful time. I couldn't wait to see her again. Then police knocked on our hotel door." For three long days, Marcus was held at the "notorious" Al Barsha Police Station, where, according to the campaign group Detained in Dubai, he was unable to make a phone call or even speak with his worried parents. A judge ordered that the construction apprentice be locked up for one year in the infamous al-Awir prison. In December 2024, Marcus stated that he had been "shocked beyond belief" by the sentence and begged "Let me go home. Please give me my life back." Cruel conditions and harrowing rapes According to a report earlier this year, rape is an "every day occurrence" at Al-Awir Central Prison, with both inmates and guards subjected to frequent violent assaults. Male prisoners must have shaved heads at all times, while female inmates, who are kept in separate buildings, reportedly have to wear head coverings. They are packed into overcrowded cells, with as many as 20 inmates battling for three beds. In an interview with The Independent in 2017, ex-managing director of Leeds United, David Haigh, who was held for nearly two years on trumped-up fraud charges, described the conditions he faced while locked up in Dubai. According to David: 'The only way to describe being in prison in Dubai is hell. I was held for 22 months and I'll never forget it – the stench, the dirt, the smell, the heat, and the lack of any information whatsoever." Remembering how he was punched, Tasered, beaten and raped during his time in a cell, David reflected: 'The worst of this abuse was perpetrated by the prison guards and police. I lost a lot of weight through stress. 'Once, when I asked for some painkillers, a guard hit me over the head with a broom handle. When someone's beating you or hurting you in whatever form, in a weird way, you can deal with that. What I found more harrowing was seeing them do it to other prisoners in front of everyone.' Speaking with the Ilford Recorder, Marcus' sister Davena Kumar revealed that her brother had been separated from friends and forced to watch other prisoners being raped. Davena told the publication: 'He's sharing a cell with someone who's been sentenced for life. They've made him watch other men being raped like it's a lesson." Opening up about Marcus' condition one month into his sentence, Davena shared: "He was skinny and he wasn't himself. He was banging on the door, calling my name, and I just wanted to hug him.' ‌ Return home and lasting trauma Remarking upon Marcus' return home, Detained in Dubai CEO Radha described the teenager as an "extraordinary young man caught in a deeply unjust system". Radha said: "Marcus should never have been put through this. He was supposed to spend a short few days with his family, but ended up spending nearly a year in the tourist destination. We are thrilled that after an intensive campaign, he was officially pardoned and is home safe, surrounded by those who love him. "This was an extraordinary young man caught in a deeply unjust system. We thank everyone who stood by Marcus and helped bring him home." ‌ While celebrating that Marcus is now "back where he belongs", Radha went on to emphasise the " trauma" he's been left with, due to the "severe" impact of the decision. She added: 'Marcus is back where he belongs. But no one should have to endure this. He was 18 at the time, and the British woman involved is now 18 too, a fact she did not divulge to him at the time. We hope his story will prompt serious reconsideration of the UK's travel advice and its engagement with the UAE on human rights issues. "Dubai could have chosen to fine and to deport him. Instead, the 18-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison. The impact on his life has been severe and there was no need for him to endure such trauma." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
