Presiding over a meeting with leaders of pro-Kannada organisations at the deputy commissioner's office on Saturday, minister HK Patil mentioned that the language dispute is also an election issue in Maharashtra. Therefore, there should be no concern about this.
The Karnataka govt agreed to form the Mahajan Commission, respecting the federal system of the country. Our stance is that the Mahajan report is the solution to the border dispute.
The minister clarified that it is the firm decision of the Karnataka state that if they agree, they should accept the Mahajan report; otherwise, the status quo should continue.
The harmonious life of Kannada-Marathi is a model for the entire country. Those who are making unnecessary noise should understand this and change their mindset, he suggested. Steps will also be taken to rectify the inconveniences faced by Kannadigas in the state of Goa.
In addition to taking all measures to prevent injustice against Kannadigas in Goa, this matter will also be discussed with the central govt, he said.
Some steps will have to be taken to withdraw the cases against pro-Kannada activists. The attention of the concerned will be drawn to it, he clarified.
Action to strengthen border schools
Border in-charge minister HK Patil assured that appropriate action will be taken after discussing in detail with the education minister, along with the Belagavi delegation, regarding the necessary steps to strengthen Kannada schools on the state's border, including Belagavi.

Ludhiana: Kidwai Nagar locals hug 35-yr-old trees to save them from felling

In a peaceful and emotion-laden demonstration, residents of Kidwai Nagar gathered at the Shaheedi Park on Saturday to protest against the proposed felling of over 20 silver oak trees, each nearly 35 years old, for the construction of an overhead water tank. Residents during the protest at the Shaheedi Park in Kidwai Nagar, Ludhiana, on Sunday. (Manish/HT) Drawing inspiration from the historic Chipko Movement, women and children hugged the trees to symbolise their love for nature and demand for environmentally responsible development. The protest remained peaceful and highlighted the community's deep concern for the loss of Ludhiana's already shrinking green spaces. Environmentalist Gagnish Khurana, addressing the media, said, 'Ludhiana, especially areas like old Kidwai Nagar, has very limited green cover. Park areas form less than 1% of the land, whereas even affordable housing projects require at least 8% green space. These trees are vital for maintaining urban balance.' Khurana also criticised the authorities for not following proper procedures. 'As per high court guidelines, it is mandatory to inform local residents through public notices before selecting any park for such construction. No such information was shared with us,' he added. Vinod Kapoor, a local resident, stressed the need for transparency and suggested public consultation before finalising such major projects. 'Development is important, but it should be sustainable. Residents must be taken into confidence,' he said. Kapil Arora, president of the local association, clarified that the residents are not opposing the construction of the water tank itself. 'We welcome the project but request that it be built at the site of the old, unused water tank. This way, we can avoid unnecessary damage to greenery. The Supreme Court has equated the cutting of trees to murder, yet our authorities seem to be ignoring the long-term consequences,' he said. The ₹1,660-crore surface water supply project, supported under a World Bank scheme, aims to reduce dependency on groundwater. However, residents insist that infrastructure development must not come at the cost of Ludhiana's already limited green lungs.

Baghel challenges ED, CBI powers in SC, fears arrest & seeks anticipatory bail

Raipur: AICC general secretary and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the jurisdiction and powers of the CBI and ED , while also seeking anticipatory bail in cases under investigation by the ED, CBI, and the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The case is set for a hearing on Monday. Baghel's application follows the arrest of his son, Chaitanya Baghel, by the ED in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. A close aide of the former chief minister told TOI that the plea primarily aims to contest the ED and CBI's authority, alongside the anticipatory bail petition. In his petition, Baghel stated that he fears being targeted for political reasons, similar to his son Chaitanya Baghel, who was taken into custody by the ED last month. Despite seeking protection from arrest in both the liquor scam and the Mahadev betting app cases, Baghel has assured full cooperation with the investigating agencies. Meanwhile, Chaitanya Baghel, currently held in Raipur jail, has also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court. His counsel, Faizal Rizvi, informed TOI that Chaitanya's plea asserts that his name does not appear in the ED's FIR or any witness statements and claims that his arrest is politically motivated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Chaitanya's judicial remand is due to conclude on Monday, after which he will be presented in court. The ED is anticipated to request an extension. The ED arrested Chaitanya on July 18, 2024, under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. His arrest coincided with his 38th birthday and followed what the agency described as new evidence in the alleged scam. According to Rizvi, while the ED alleged that Chaitanya received an interest-free loan of Rs 5 crore from a jeweller, documents submitted in February 2025 indicate that the loan was repaid with interest. The ED further claimed that proceeds from the liquor scam were invested in Chaitanya's real estate project. Earlier this year, the ED raided Bhupesh Baghel's residence in connection with the liquor scam. A month later, the CBI conducted searches at his home regarding the Mahadev betting app case. Raids were also carried out at the residences of his former OSDs. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
